    I am glad that this works for you. I have a dog who has had so many issues with resource guarding. I tried trading, but what people don't realize is that sometimes you can't trade up. Unfortunately, my dog was able to get ahold of chocolate, and we couldn't get him away without getting bit, and there is nothing in the world that would have gotten him away from the chocolate. He most commonly resource guards little pieces of trash that are dangerous for him to have and even if we got him away with a high value treat he would take the treat and run right back and try to bite anyone if they tried to take the item even if he was getting a treat. My dog is very smart and realized that all he had to do was steal and then he would get a high value reward. Eventually I realized he needed training so I went to a positive trainer who after my dog snapped at another dog and she did nothing and didn't tell me what I should have done I had so much anxiety about training which effected my dog. After that I found a different trainer who was a balanced trainer, now my dogs resource guarding is almost full gone and our bond has never been better. They do teach that you should be able to take something from your dog but it is different then most people think if my dog doesn't care that I took it he gets it right back along with lots of praise if he tries to attack he loses the item for a little and we try again. There will be moments for every dog owner that your dog will get ahold of something potentially dangerous and you need to be able to take it away without risk of injury.

      @@DaveL1994 I fixed my toy/treat guarding puppy. I tried positive only but it wasn’t working. So i had to show my dog that gaurdinf doesn’t work with me by not backing down and using leash pressure to communicate that I didn’t like the behavior. After some fair discipline he stopped gaurding nearly as much. Then I started taking his toy or treat and giving him cheese which he loves and giving the toy back. Now he never guards lol it’s only been a week

      I took my dog ro puppy socialising all positive classes, it was a big mistake, my puppy was a rescue and had been starved so food was very precious to him , all those treats were a major source of anxiety to him , he's now 5 he has very slight issues but are mostly under control, I just make sure I'm the one in control of resources, he's happy with that , I never treat with other dogs around him I never let others treat him , he knows I keep him safe .

    My Great Pyrenees is very protective of myself and my adult daughter that lives with me. My daughter's boyfriend has been bitten twice now because he approached my daughter. Each time, my daughter had food near her. I don't know if that had anything to do with the attack. What can we do if the "resource" is a human?

    Hi Rachel,
    Wondering if you could talk about resource guarding outside the home.
    My 1.5 year old dog started resource guarding balls (that don't belong to him). I walk him off leash in an area with multiple dogs. I don't bring a ball but if someone throws a ball, he runs after it. Once he has the ball, he becomes aggressive with any dog that approaches. Even if I give the ball back to the owner, he guards the spot where I took the ball. He barks, & lunges at dogs AND the person who owns the ball....basically snaps (but not towards me). He doesn't resource guard anything in the house or with the family.

I wonder if I need to put the big dog down now. We also have cats and live by small kids who roam around eating all the time. I can't take the chance her aggression will stop at a smaller dog, what if it escalates?

    My dog is very smart and knows - similarly if he takes something he will get a treat for it so does negative behavior trying to receive a positive reward. He gets very aggressive in playing as well he will hurt us by pushing toys into our legs, growling, wrapping his legs around ours etc and being overly “mean” it’s not normal play. He resource guards things he’s not supposed to have. Not so much his toys or bones - he lets us take those. But if he grabs things he knows he’s not supposed to have he will growl, snarl and has bit me multiple times in the past. Any advice on how to help? Thank you!

    I've worked with many dogs and the positive only training doesn't work for behavior issues great for party tricks like sits, stands and paws but not behavior issues, if your dog resource guards then you need step up and be there leader, if they trust and respect you then you won't need to even worry about resource guarding. I've never had to "train" my own dogs to stop resource guarding, because what I say and do goes no matter what. and they love, trust, and respect that fact. They are man's best friend, not best friend to the treats, which so many people try to make you believe. this "science based" training is getting out of hand. any one else agree?

    We've been having major issues with our 1 year old Golden with this. He is very aggressive when it comes to food and for safety reasons we've resorted to feeding him in a crate as we have several small children and another dog he's gone after over food the kids dropped before. Do you think feeding him in a crate would be harmful? When hand feeding him he's perfectly fine, but any time he's eating anything in a bowl or on the floor that he finds and you approach he growls, snarls and even bites. Thank you!

      Like Rachel said, throw higher value treats BEFORE he gets stiff or starts to react, then walk away. You're trying to change the trigger, so he's thinking where's my treat rather than I'm going to nail you. Will take a little bit and a few tries before you get to that point, but it does work. From the time I get my dogs they get more and better food treats when hands are near the food dish. If they're growling when you're half way across the room, then start at 3/4 of the way from where the dog is and throw the higher value treat, then walk away. Eventually, after several sessions, you'll be able to get right next to them and drop a piece of liverwurst in their dish - but do not rush it! You have to go at the dog's pace to be successful, otherwise it could be a set back. This is one behavior you don't want to ignore too. Can be very dangerous and potentially lifelong if not treated. Hope that helps.

    My 2 and 1/2 year old Cocker Spaniel, Louis resource guards both me and my husband. We cannot even hug without him acting out. He does not guard food or toys. He does guard me, my husband, anything that we accidentally drop, napkins, socks, shoes. His entire demeanor changes and his eyes look crazy. I don't know that my husband's relationship with Louis or my relationship with him is toxic. We are considering training or giving him up and trying to find a single male owner for him. Unfortunately I did not notice these issues when he was just a puppy. We have recently reached out to a training center where he stays there. It cost thousands of dollars, but now I am thinking it won't work with this severe resource guarding issue. Your guidance?
    We have tried using high value treats and sometimes he will leave the shoe or sock or whatever he's guarding and sometimes he will not go for it. This is taking it's toll on our marriage. Can even sit together or hug/kiss without Louis guarding!

    What do you do when your dog gets reactive towards other dogs when you come near the other dog? My dog loves to play with the neighbors dog and they play really well. He is an miniature American Eskimo but he is a lot bigger that my dog. My dog is a 7lb Shepoo.
    He always has bone and a ball laying around in the back yard and he like to tease her with them. She sees that he has a bone or a toy and she barks at the end of her tie out and tries to get to whatever he has. I have tried to get her favorite toy out and distract her with play but she doesn't seem interested. I have even got out the roast beef and she won't take it. She is solely focused on whet he has and she doesn't give up. So I have to take her inside and play for a while. After being inside for about a half hour she wants to go back outside and it starts all over again.
    I really don't have any other place to take her in my yard since there are busy roads all around me except the back yard. What do I do?😢

    My dog started guarding the bed. I have three dogs and they have one large bed and now my other two dogs are afraid to approach. She won't bite but she will growl and give them side eye. She won't do this to humans at all just my other two dogs. She's the same with toys. No problem with food because they all eat separately and even if they come close to each other she won't react. Im having issues with her guarding the bed and toys and even myself now. She'll guard me a little bit if she's getting attention and her siblings approach. What's the best way to stop this behavior? I'm afraid I'm making it worse by trying to help. (Also, their toys aren't out all the time for them to take and play with she'll just do it whenever there's a toy present)

    • @robinrutherfordcost4748
      @robinrutherfordcost4748 6 месяцев назад

      She may need her own bed, away from the other 2 dogs. You have to step up and keep your other dogs safe so they're not afraid. Might have to have a house line (six foot leash with handle cut so it doesn't catch on anything - only on her when you are there to supervise) on the growly one. Keep her bed away, so she can't attack when the other 2 are trying to get to their bed. I treat my guys in the order they came into the house as well. The first dog I own, down to the last, gets fed in that order, leash put on first, petted first, even trained first, etc. Try not to use people names or dog names as it tends to creat jealousy. I have a baby gate up so the other dogs can see me working with the first dog, so by the time it's the last dog's turn, they got the training exercises. My walks are all separate too - gets some one on one time with Mom, and gets them away from the other dogs for a bit. Hope that helps.

      This behavior stopped since I made this post I discovered she was guarding my closet because my scent was there and the bed was near I later saw she took one of my socks and was guarding that as well I ended up moving the bed away from that area and removed the sock when she wasn't looking and the behavior stopped and she hasn't done anything like it since so I feel very lucky that seemed to work but these are all amazing tips I hadn't thought about especially walking them all separately and giving each one time away from the others I will definitely be doing that. thank you!

  • @leo.and.cricket
    @leo.and.cricket 6 месяцев назад

    The frustrating thing for me is that she is resource guarding anything. Could be something I put down, like my phone. It is harder to predict her behaviour when my cat walking by, or just sitting somewhere - she barks and lunges. Sometimes she is lunges and growls, and I have no idea what she could be guarding because I was just sitting at the desk with my cat. I do want to say that most times they get along.
    I think being out in off leash areas with balls being thrown everywhere has affected her for the worse. It’s so hard because I just started to bring her to off leash areas so she can play and run, which actually is stress free some of the times with the right dogs.

You are the master, the dog lives in your house, you already feed it bath it pick up its poop. Now all it has to do is grow or bite, and it gets what ever it wants. Would you let your children treat you like that. 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️

    Yes I'd love to hear how to have a dog drop something out of their mouth
