    Over 50 years ago I was engineer on LCM-8 landingcraft. They had four 6-71 engines and no two engines were the same but they all had the same parts. What a versatile piece of machinery it is.

    Late 1970s early 80s I worked for a bus company out of Brisbane Queensland, Australia. Had a few V6-71s, completely stripped one down for rebuild, rings, bearings etc. All the bolts were 3/8 UNC into the block, UNF nuts on studs, 9/16 spanner, when I git to the end of the job I was short 2 short bolts but had 2 very long bolts left in the wash tray? Clearly I had made a mistake somewhere and had to backtrack till I found where the long bolts went. Cant mistake the sound of a Screeming Jimmy no matter how many cylinders. Great to watch you guys working on it, buses don't give you much room sometimes. Ted from down under.

    I really enjoyed the film today. As a frustrated mechanic and big truck driver (stroke), I really enjoy seeing the technical part of your videos. I grew up with my father driving 2 strokes and really miss him when I hear one scream. I’ve never driven one, most of my driving was big hp Cat’s hauling coal. However, there are two guys who run with my old friends who still drive 12v71’s, proving that 2 strokes still live!

      Who's your friends. I'm in coal country lot of big cats down here I work on them. Glad to see another coal brother on here. I work on 2 trucks today putting 700 to the wheels. 379 Pete's. 1 has polished fenders. I also just converted a accert to a single turbo. Twins went down the other day with 71 ton on the back we lemped it to the shop lol

    Me and the wife have been talking about getting a used school bus to convert, but after coming across your channel we are now talking about getting one of these. I worked on these old 2 stroke Detroits for 13 years in the Marine Corps and I miss the sound of them. Love it!

    I got a sweet deal on a 400something piece kobalt hand tool set a couple years ago. I've been using them as a part time mechanic since then. I've used pretty much every brand under the sun (snappy, Mac etc) as a full time mechanic for years and so far I've been very happy with the kobalt set. I've used and abused them and haven't broken one yet. They don't quite have the level of polish as one off the truck but for my needs they have been perfect.

    So, I recently moved back home to help my dad out with things and while out running an errand yesterday, I spotted a mural by where the local Greyhound stop used to be. It's been there for years now, but it's got a little more impact to me than before. It's of your boy or one of his brothers, a silversides with a Miami destination sign up front. Assuming I remember the routing you mentioned in a previous video, anyway! Location is Homewood, IL on the corner of Dixie Highway and 187th. I'll try and get a picture next time.

    And yet another rainy day for Scott an Lenny while it was another hot, dry day in NC again with no measurable rain now for going on 8 weeks now and I am watching my crops whither up and dry away from no rain at all. I had to buys semi tanker of water a week ago to water my watermelon field with and I think I’m gonna be bankrupt this year. I don’t think I can keep on going like this much longer before I lose everything just from no rain at all.
    Another great Scott and Lenny video production again. And a great camera girl job also!

    Great job.
    Really interesting to watch Y'all wrenching on that engine.
    That valve clearance double adjustment could work on pretty much every engine.
    We did it on P & W R1820-53 radial aircraft engines on Coast Guard Grumman HU16e Albatross seaplanes.

    I'm sure you thought of the other advantages of hand tools besides conversation with your son: 1) Happier HOA neighbors and 2) (bonus) more pleasant RUclips audio. Not that anyone minds hearing power tools, just saying they're not necessary for an enjoyable experience.
    FWIW, almost every breakdown in my bus is followed by a rainstorm or snow, at least by the time the parts and tools are assembled. Thought it was just me.

    The inline 71 series is the most versatile engine ever made. You can change rotation, swap which side the blower is on, switch manifold sides, mount them in twin or quad configuration, etc.
    the quad 6-71 arrangement was a great marine engine for many years. A long lasting 1200 HP engine.
    And the 2,3& 4 cylinder versions were great for winches, hydraulics, generators etc. they just ran and ran. There was actually a 1 cylinder version, but I think they were only used by the factory for testing and not sold commercially.

      James Anderton there are lots of them. Most were used to power refrigeration on rail cars or for generators. They go for $1500-3000 depending on condition.

    Watching you put the head on with limited vertical room. It'd be worthwhile for the amount of times you'd use it, to make a solid lift bar out of tubing that would go across the head and attach on each end with a lug in the center to attach to the lift. Least that way, you could lift the head a bit higher and miss the top of the block when you're pushing it in.

    A couple of things just for S&Gs before installing the head: Make certain all the fluid is out of the head bolt holes and take a coat hanger or bent hose clamp and fish around the cam pockets for anything that could have fallen in there. Nothing worse than a busted block. Guide studs are a lot of help too, even if they are really short as you'd need here.

    Scott thank you for these videos, I was searching for info on the 671s in my boat. Once I started watching it is hard to stop. I just love the 671s and I have learned so much watching. My 671s have about 1200 hours on them, I don't think they are broke in yet. Great motors and great buses. Who used 671s in school buses? Looking for one to consider for conversion to a MH.

    Just a suggestion, there is a gasket compound called "high tack" that can be used on heads. It helps hold gaskets in place... FYI

      @@stanpatterson5033 Not where I am (Hunter Valley about 140 Km/85 miles North of Brooklyn), but it does snow in the Barrington Mountains about 60 Kms North of me (because of the higher elevation). It only gets down to about -5 C (23 F) here, cold enough for thick frost on the ground and freezing cold rain but not snow.

    I can't believe you can work on that bus on the street and not have everyone in the neighbourhood there trying to 'help'. I can't even pop the hood of my 1/2 ton in winter to check the oil without the neighbours coming to see if I need a boost . . .

    To seat the rubber "O" rings, what I usually do is to put a drop of Vaseline on them and put them in their place, it keeps them from from being displaced by the placement of the head

    @11:53, I know you've talked about International Compound #2 (peanut butter), but what is it used for, anti-seize or as a sealant of some kind, possibly a predecessor to loctite?

    I was looking at the markings on the heads of the big bolts on the rocker assemblies and they looked like they were marked grade 7. Never heard of grade 7 before. Looked it up and sure enough there is a SAE grade 7 as well as a couple other grades I had not heard of (grade 5.2 and 8.2).

    If you notice the second fuel tube from the right has a bend in it making it shorter. That's the one Tyler had to put the back on first and pull forward

    i have a question about the brackets on the end of the head.. they seem to have a gasket on the head and on the timing covers.. when you install those on the head prior to installing the head.. do you install them at the highest position then when the head is on.. loosen them.. allow the bolts that go into the timing cover to pull them down to compress the gasket ..while tightening the bolts into the head so both gaskets get an even clamping force.. and you seem to have a great weather forecasting service for your block.

    You need to make yourself a set of centering pins to set the head, I have a set for 53's, 71's and 92's. I makes easy work out of placing the head without displacing the o-rings. 73 - KV4WM - A US Navy Nuclear Submarine Veteran and Licensed Radio Operator.

    My teacher was a stickler for smooth movements when torquing head bolts. It's a bitch to do when doing some engines but it gives me piece of mind when I do it in one smooth motion.

    Is there already cam bearings in both cam positions in the block or do you have to install them in the back of the motor, do you need to do anything with the oiling like remove the old cam bearings and put blanks in

    Man that’s a pain, all those individual gaskets you have to not knock out of place while trying to install that heavy slab of metal in a tight spot. You have patience!

    Good videos, enjoy them allot, if I were you I would be trashing all of the rubber hoses and replace them with silicone hose with the correct clamps, there not cheap to buy, but a breakdown on the road could be very expensive, thanks

    Hey Scott, I'm curious to see if you get any benefits such as better MPG's, lower engine temp, or better performance with the 4 valve head. My 1948 PD-3751 had the 4 valve head upgrade when I purchased it, just wondering why someone took the time and expense without any turbo.

    So, any idea what the horse power increase might be with the 4 valve head, or will it be any different.?
    I know the turbo will bring it up considerably when you get there.
    Not being a jerk, just wondering how many times you used those head bolts over. I wouldn't be afraid to use them over once.
    Setting the valves, and injectors is pretty interesting, at least you don't have Jakes, as far as assembly goes any way. Nice if you have them, but less fun to set and deal with.
    Is your engine a 6-71N, or a 6-71T? Or some other model.
    If it is an N model, and has a compression ratio of 18.7:1, are you going to put lower compression pistons in when you out of frame the engine, and add the turbo?
    Or can you get away with the stock pistons, and the higher compression ratio, and add the turbo without needing to worry about that.
    Will you need different injectors when you add the turbo?

    Enjoy watching your videos and am in fact scouting about for the right bus for my purposes. Question on this video, I see six sets of three rockers each. How are you actuating four valves and the fuel injector? Or how are they sets of valves tied together? Secondary question, I plan to pull a trailer with my soon to be acquired bus, can you give a rough idea of max capacity. Trailer will be used for 6-8 vintage bikes. Thanks, this is my morning routine now!

    Just wondering about them injectors you got and installed when you had your 2v head redone month earlier. Did you have any issues from the 2 - C's being mixed in or did it all work out? Spray patterns looks good just from the month use with the 2v head. Did you have any other injector issues ?

      Don’t jinx it Marc! That’s the very last thing you want. When it rains there the Playa turns into a glue-like adobe. No vehicle can move in it. Everything is locked in place till the Playa firms back up. It’s a really bad scene when it happens.

    Would guide studs have helped in the head installation and also backing out the bolts at the top of the front and rear housings would have given you the clearance you needed to drop the head on the block

      None of the rocker assemblies were attached.

      Look at the bolts that hold the rocker assemblies.
