What a lopvely guy John Coghlan is, when he lived in the Isle of Man, he and Gillie his beautiful wife helped out charities in many ways, two of which I remember personally. The first was a series of six annual Round Table "Forties Nights" featuring the great Syd Lawrence Orchestra, which were held in the Palace Lido in Douglas, where John parked his Winston Churchill Staff Car, a lovely old Humber Limousine, in the entrance vestibule, where the three thousand people who came to the gig could get a bit of the wartime ambiance, especially with one of his tanks parked outside, to give a wartime atmosphere to the event. The other charity fund raiser was when he called me up to put together a band to raise money for the families of victims of the Hillsborough Disaster in April 1989. He played his drums on that night, and showed the world why he was the best Rock Drummer that Britain has ever produced, and a lot of money was raised by his organisation for the families . He should have been Knighted in my opinion, for services to popular music, and it would have been well deserved for Gillie to be Lady Coghlan of Burford. Keep up the great work John, and thanks for a great interview.

Loved seeing Coghlan every year with his group Coghlan Quo. Fantastic all the old songs, we were there at his last gig. Brilliant night
Funny how they always forget to mention Roy Lynes who was in the band for five years (1965-1970) and appeared on their first three LPs.
Roy Lynes is still alive too.
That's right Pete, Roy was there in the 'trenches' during the tough years.
Roy left the QUO before "Dog of Two Head" was released, though a song he
co-wrote "Umleitung" was on that album.
Even though I'd heard "Matchstickmen" in 1968 as a 7 year old kid, I didn't and couldn't process it the way "Down the Dustpipe" affected me in 1970.
"Down the Dustpipe" is one of the most important songs of my life.
Roy Lynes' piano playing is one of the main reasons the song sounds so great.
Too many QUO 'fans' call The Frantic Four 'The Real QUO'
Those people need to have some respect and recognition of Roy's contribution to
QUO's early years.
Bloody great drummer, stuff the critics, he was a locomotive and the drummers who came after him were Rossi's drum machine
Eh, love John. Saw Quo live many times and they were awesome in all of their forms. However, if you actually listen to some of the live stuff when John was there, he often veered off slightly. As a drummer, I understand how that can happen. But, Letley in particular, is regarded as one of the most accomplished drummers out there. Kircher was a cracking drummer and awesome on the End of the Road tour. Cage is also excellent. Drum machine's they ain't!
Frantic Four fantastic gig, was st Wolverhampton, I am glad I did, it was great to see them altogether.

They never sounded the same after The Mad Turk left. He had a subtle style or technique which was made for The Quo sound.

Great seeing him at Minehead; would have loved to have seen Roy Lynes too.
I dreamed about meeting Rick and asking where Francis was 20 years ago. Rick said Francis likes to keep to himself and I wouldn't be able to talk to him. That's cool. I've been listening to Quo since 1975 and I love their music. Some people think Francis must have a big head and a huge Ego I think in reality God gave him his talent so he could sing and play just for me. So rock on Francis what else do you have?

I was lucky enough to see Quo 57 times from the very early 70s until the ‘final’ gig at Milton Keynes but the band never sounded quite the same after 82 without John.
Pete Kircher and Jeff Rich were good drummers but didn’t quite have the same drive his drum solo’s were legendary.
He played a gig in York where I live a few years ago with his own ‘Quo’ band and his enthusiasm has never waned.
I can see Rossi ending up with nothing but regrets and no friends, his ego has become bigger than reality, used to be my hero when I was a kid 😢.

@@wendysmith2255 Bullshit! Everyone grieves in a different way. They started out as friends but after so many years people change. Rick was no saint and not an easy bloke to work with in a professional band because of his drinking habits which he couldn't quit.
After watching him on his chat tour i have renewed appreciation for him… he’s funny / open and I don’t think he’s as bad as you make out
What a live album 77 was .nothing comes close
His groove was off the chain. Band didn't have that sound after he left.
John & Alan Lancaster were irreplaceable. when they left, Status Quo became the new Chas & Dave

We've all got our opinions. I can listen to releases from all iterations of the band. But when they did the Frantic Four Concert I was simply amazed.
I had always assumed that John Coghlan was nicknamed "Spud" due to his Irish heritage.
No one can seem to drum like John Coghlan in his Quo days. He has a funny sort of shuffle thing going on, his replacements just don't do it the same way. The original lineup with Roy was great but the Piledriver to Blue we 4:30 re just incredible for the fans.
After this they just went off a cliff for me.
Edit. Just got to the bit where John is mentioning the shuffle thing. Lol.
The other thing that ruined the sound was the change to vox amps.
Quo for me will alway be Rick John Alan and Francis. I think the coke made Francis very arrogant in the 80s .After the 1982 album which wasn’t bad tbh . Back to back and so on for me we’re dreadful
So refeshing to hear John speak light heartedly but seriously unlike Francis who likes to see himself as some sort of unfunny comedian. Alan was another I've seen and heard in conversation and didn't go off subject and talk in gobbledegook like Fran still does.
Coghlan is definitely one of the best Rock Drummers of all time.
It was a very sad day when he left QUO.
Driven out by the egomania of Francis Rossi's desire to control the Band.
The 1982 album was very 'ordinary' and Pete Kircher's Drum sound was very 'hollow' and quite horrible. There were only a couple of decent songs on that album and the
"Back to Back' album as well.
Alan was only hanging on by his finger nails until he couldn't take any more.
The horrible and disgusting "Marguerita Time" was the straw that broke the Camel's back and Alan had no choice but to leave the Band.
The Judge in the court case made a huge mistake by allowing Rossi and Parfitt to continue using the Band's name.
Alan said "It was like having one of your children abducted and abused"
Alan told Rossi not to come within arms length of him.
Even though Alan was a lovely guy, according to all reports you wouldn't want to get into a fight with him.
Parfitt said that Alan was a tough guy that could 'handle himself'
Rossi is one of the best Guitarists and Singers in music history, I just have very strong doubts about his character.
I wish we could see the 'real' Rossi.
He jokes around and avoids the truth in interviews.
He calls himself an 'insecure show off' seeking attention of an audience.
I think it's all a psychological 'smoke screen' to hide who and what he really is.
Rossi is a very clever man, there's no doubt about that.
Though he's not one of my favourite people.
Ever since I read in an interview where someone labelled Rossi as 'The Anti-QUO',
I've adopted it as well.
Rossi set about dismantling the best and greatest Rock Band in history.
Rossi destroyed our STATUS QUO.
Rossi and Ian Jones got rid of Spud, they haven't made a good record since 1981
John left entirely of his own accord, mainly down the massive amount of cocaine Rick and Francis were taking and the punishing tour schedule.
Yes Never too late was definitely the last great Quo album . I did like 1982 but it was weaker as for back to back and what followed . Dreadful

Status Quo PLC (Parfitt, Lancaster, Coghlan) would be superb. Despite being a great musician, Rossi's ego destroyed Quo.
Post Frantic Four and the loss of one of the best Rhythm sections in Rock history, Rossi and Parfitt made some very ' ordinary' music.
Apart from a couple of reasonably good tracks, "Ain't Complainin'" and "Perfect Remedy" were fairly horrible albums and that's being polite.
QUO would never be the one that we loved when they played the 16 min and 42 second LIVE
version of "4500 Times"
Though they did make some good albums without Alan and John.
"Perfect Remedy" is one of the worst albums in recording history.
"Don't Stop" is a fairly embarrassing Covers album.
Though I did and do enjoy "Riffs" and "FITLCentury"
"RTYDrop" is a masterpiece of an album.
"Thirsty Work" has some very good tracks on it.
"Under The Influence" is musically acceptable in places. It contains a very rare good Country song "Blessed are the Meek"
"Party Ain't Over Yet" is enjoyable, yet light weight.
"Heavy Traffic" is very good, it is awesome.
"ISOT4th Chord" is very good, some very clever, intelligent Rock music.
"Quid Pro Quo" is excellent and a thumpin' Rock album.
"Bula QUO" has great Rock tracks on it, Ska, Reggae and Jungle music as well.
"Backbone" is a mixed bag, some very good tracks, a few that aren't.
Though they should've adjusted the Band's name after John and Alan left.
