This video and more importantly the comments saved me (I'm 6'2 and it was awkward as hell to contort below the glove box!). Top tips when putting the new air filters back in which the video conveniently skips over lol: 1) Take pictures of the old filters as you pull them out so you can easily match the same orientation with the new filters (the top filter has sponge along it that goes in upwards so that's easy, but the bottom one only interconnects with the top one in just one orientation) 2) Depth wise, the filters go in about 1/3 of the distance from the passenger (non engine) side 3) Put the top filter in and hold up in place with a finger 4) Slide the bottom filter into the groove that you can feel on the bottom of the housing. 5) When aligned correctly the bottom and top filters slide and interconnect together (you can practice this when they are out the box). 6) Rejoice when you have them aligned and securely all the way pushed in cheers, Steve
NOTE: Besides having the thin tabs go first, you have to check that they're facing the right direction. To do so, look at both filters sideways & you will see an arrow (triangle). Both arrows should point towards the cabin rather than the engine. It is easier to make this mistake with the bottom filter since the top one has the foam at the top. I hope this helps.
I have a question, if I go with the "thin tab first", the "airflow arrow" will point towards the engine - not the cabin. So how should I put them in? Prioritize "thin tab first" or "pointing airflow arrow toward the cabin"
Thank you for the video. Worked for my wife's 2013 Mazda 3 GT, the only difference being the housing had 3 screws instead of 2. Being 6'4", 220 lbs, I had to do a handstand under the dash, 20 minutes blood rushing to my head of trial and error getting the 2 filters to stack on top of each other correctly. Fun times.
Oh my god thank you! I changed them out in less than 15 minutes! In 120,000 miles I had never changed them...thought all filters were changed at oil changes...so the ones I pulled out were completely black, with excess debree build up...they were so clogged it's no wonder my air conditioner wasnt blowing strong anymore. Now my a/c works great. I feel like my car sounds like it can breathe now...
All I wanted to do was quickly check my cabin air filter... 2 minute, no hassle job, I thought... here I am, almost 30 minutes later, and I had to look up a video for what should have been super basic. Thank you for the video, i probably would have been struggling longer without it.
Thanks for this video. The top filter was very tricky on my 2011 mazda3. A couple firm shoves up with the filter vertical got it in place, then holding it with one finger while sliding the second filter in (oriented so it's standing vertically) got it in place. For anyone flubbing around with their fingers in the dark, the second filter does slot into a groove that's along the bottom of the filter area. You can feel it with your fingers. If you have any trouble finding it's on the edge closer to you (as opposed to towards the engine compartment).
Your comment was a life saver. Mine was the same. Had to use your one finger hold and it worked perfectly. I appreciate your comment more than you know lol.
Frustrating! Took me about a hour to install this filter. The top filter keeps dropping, so you have try and pin it with a finger while lining up the bottom filter. Almost gave up but finally got it in.
I will say after reading the comments that laying upside down on the seat made it 100% easier to be able to reach the filters with both hands and actually being able to see what you are doing!
First time owning a car, got a used car and knew the cabin air filter needed to be changed when I got the car but didn’t have the fund cause of purchasing the car. This video helped me do just that! Thank you so much for creating this video! It couldn’t have been more simpler! 😊😊
Thanks for the visual tutorial. Helped me replace the filters in my moms car in about 10 minutes. I didn't exactly follow 100% though, I didn't bother disconnecting the wire connector cause it wasn't really in my way...saved me some extra time and hassle while also preventing any possible damage to the connector.
Are you serious? $80 for just a cabin filter replacement!? That seems super high even for dealerships. Maybe because when I used to take it in for an oil change they would give a discount for $40 parts and service. 🤷♂️
Great job! Took about 10minutes to do. To be on the safe side i also disconnected the battery before doing this. Sliding the top filter back into place can be a little tricky.
Great Video. Just replaced the cabin air filters in my 2011 Mazda 3 and this video made it very easy to do. I agree with some of the other people in the difficulty of getting to see everything as you do it if are not a small person. I'm 6' 2" and 190lbs so it took some twisting and something to kneel on to make it easier.
whew! just finished replacing the filters on my 2010, and boy did they need it. DIRTY! Only difference with mine was an LED light attached to the paneling below the glove box. Unfastened that then good to go. There seems to be a little trick to the filter stacking or i'm not doing it right. Seems to me the card attached to the paneling serves the purpose of keeping the top filter stacked on top of the bottom. It's a space eater if you will. Again maybe I need to get back in there and secure it better. Man I had to come up for air a couple of times. Some close quarters. Thanks for the video!!!
I just did this successfully based on this video, and it worked. I had to wriggle under the dashboard, and shine a light in, but the video definitely helped, and was much simpler than the really involved instructions offered elsewhere.
Thanks. This was just what I needed. Exactly the same as my 2013. $69.95 for this at the Mazda dealer. I suggest you run the fan on high after taking out the old filters to clear all of the debris.
I would not recommend this. The main purpose of the filter is to keep debris from circulating through the cooling system. Should this occur, it could drastically reduce cooling/heating capacity and cause other minor issues within your vehicles HVAC systems.
Very helpful! Glad I came across it. The first site I saw instructions for this on had you removing the glove compartment and all kind of crazy unnecessary things.
Three things... First, as someone mentioned in the comments earlier... be careful to not touch any metal with the white "card" looking thing (it is a blower resistor, and it is on the backside of the electrical connector that you are instructed to unplug with a flat-head screwdriver), as it can damage the part. Best to remove the cables from the car battery to insure this unintentional damage doesn't happen. This is something I didn't know until after I replaced mine and THEN read through the comments. Thankfully I didn't damage the part. Thanks to that poster! Second, you might have heard that the narrator says to remove the TWO Phillips head screws, but the video only shows one being removed. I didn't have the volume on and missed the 2nd screw the 1st time around. The other screw is hidden by a plastic tab, 1"-2" to the left of the one shown in the video Last, be sure to note the orientation (direction and position) of the filters as you pull them out. They are not identical or asymmetrical... the new filters need to be put in the exact position/orientation as the old ones were pulled out (reverse order of course).
FOR ANYONE HAVING TROUBLE PUTTING THE HOUSING COVER BACK ON Make sure the 2 white foam things are hanging out of the correct spots on each side. I spent about 10+ mins wondering why it wouldn’t go on and found that out.
Tip - the filters don’t fit exactly in the middle of the gap - it’s about 1/3 of the way from the driver side and 2/3 of the way from the engine side (in other words, closer to the passenger side), so start shimmying the top filter starting with this placement in mind. Don’t give up, you got this! (Promise it gets easier each time too)
This is great. I just had my filter replaced by the dealer and it still has a mildew smell coming out of the air vents. They said they can install an ac system deodorizer for $120. Is this easy to put in as well?
Im pretty sure a Ac system deodorizer is just a spray that you spray into your vents. If you are still smelling something I would look into getting your car detailed because the smell could be coming from the carpet in your car.
hey try a car deodorizing bomb (like Meguiar's or Turtle Wax). I just used the Turtle Wax Odor X and it seems to work quite well. Basically, you turn you car on and use the recycling feature on your AC while the can sprays a deodorizing mists into the air. Just make sure to leave all the windows up and close all the doors. Also, make sure to leave your doors unlocked!
I did save some money but this was a tough job like many have mentioned regarding the physical position required. The problem that extended this task to an hour was the top peice kept falling down so it was very hard to get the bottom piece in. Having to use both hands was very difficult since part of me was out on the ground and the rest scrunched under the glove compartment. Any tips on keeping the top filter up so the bottom can slide into position easier? I think I got it in right.
If narrow shouldered with hands like a small child then it's easy. I got my shouldrers firmly wedged inbetween the seat front and glove box. Yes I had the seat all the way back. Thought I was going to have to call fro help :-)
While I wouldn't call this difficult, other vehicles I have owned are generally much easier. Just drop the glove box, pull off a cover and out comes the filter.

Every year I have to curse at the Mazda engineers who designed the worst place to put the cabin filter. While other cars like Honda is a 2min change. I have to fight this for 30mins before I can get it stacked correctly
It should take you no longer than 15 minutes to install the filters if you purchased the filters from filterheads.com and installed them in the correct orientation. Thank you for watching!
I watched the video. Took my filters out with leaves included. Looked exactly like video. I left my wires hanging as I had difficulty disconnecting the resistor I drove to car parts store with beautiful AC working. Went inside and bought filters. Drove home and the AC was only blowing fan on setting 4. But it was not cold. Fan only. AC light was on on settings 1,2 and 3. But not working. Then I installed filters. Horrible engineering by Mazda. Wonder why Jiffy Lube never tries to sell you the cabin air filter. You literally have to lay on your back with feet over seat. Naturally very hard to stack filters. The one thing it said in Purculator filter directions is to disconnect the battery. Does not tell you why though. Well after surfing the web and then reading below the video I see I blew my resistor also. (I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO RE-FILM THIS VIDEO AND ADD TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY AS YOU MAY FRY YOUR RESISTOR COSTING YOU ATLEAST A $100.00 IF YOU DO IT YOURSELF) . SAVING MONEY BY DOING MYSELF COST ME A $100.00 PLUS NO A/C FOR A WEEK AS THE PART MUST BE ORDERED ONLINE.
I'm 6'3, 200 lbs and was able to do it. You just have to sit in the seat backwards with your legs in either side of the headrest, then lean back onto the floor and scoot back until you can reach what you need to reach. Leaning on your right shoulder, you can access everything pretty easily. Just put your tools on the floor of the car so that you can grab them without moving.

Your comment was a life saver. Mine was the same. Had to use your one finger hold and it worked perfectly. I appreciate your comment more than you know lol.
This has to be the worst implementation of a cabin air filter in a Japanese car. It was a nuisance to insert top filter properly.
Yes the Engineers did a poor job with the design.

how often do you have to replace the cabin air filters..?
Here at Filterheads, we recommend changing your cabin filter every year or 15,000 miles.
More often if you smoke.
bs maybe if you smoke a pack a day inside your car. You won't need to change your cabin filter but every 5 years or so.
I found my mazda only had one filter (not sure if intentional or not?).
Thank you for informing us!
While I wouldn't call this difficult, other vehicles I have owned are generally much easier. Just drop the glove box, pull off a cover and out comes the filter.

What happens if you run the car without an air filter? Seems to blow mad air without it, a plus if you live in the desert.

I have a gen 1 and gen 2. Gen 1 seems much more difficult and involved to get to.
Yeah the newer ones are easier to install.
Did anyone else have dried up material fly out their vents after doing this? Looked like weather stripping kind of.
We have seen dried up leaves and debris.
I hope you find a $20 bill in the laundry that you forgot about!
Purchase your new filter today at www.filterheads.com
Why does it have 2 filters
The filter was broken into two parts so it would be easier to install.
Over engineering
I agree!

What a nightmare. This is next to impossible to do unless you are 125 pounds and you can stand on your head.

At 5'9 it was a tight space but glad I didn't have to take out the glove box. Took me about 20 minutes.
Robert Schenck I'm 6'3 :/
I'm 6'3, 200 lbs and was able to do it. You just have to sit in the seat backwards with your legs in either side of the headrest, then lean back onto the floor and scoot back until you can reach what you need to reach. Leaning on your right shoulder, you can access everything pretty easily. Just put your tools on the floor of the car so that you can grab them without moving.
not correct for newer mazda
Yes, this video shows the process for a 2010-2013 Mazda 3.
the 04 model is about 10 times more difficult!!
Thank you for informing us!
My Honda you just unclick the glove box, no disassembly!! Mazda what the hell is this!!
Lol, Yeah the didn't think this process out well.
worst cabin filter design of all time
It certainly is not the most convenient location for a filter housing
