stories from norway was on discovery plus (dplay at the time) but it's been taken off by now which is a shame because it's such a good show. i truly think it's the best thing they've ever done, and it deserved more seasons/versions. the show premiered in 2018 and it actually won "Best Comedy Program" and "Best costume/makeup" at the gullruten awards (basically the norwegian emmys).
I actually live in this area. Norway is not seen as a corrupt country, but we have definetely had some situations with politicians. But I feel very lucky to live here.Very safe, and a lot of space. Most people are respectful of others, no matter who they are.
How the hell can I have missed these??? :D Ylvis are GREAT! I actually lived on Helgøya, an island in Mjøsa, when this diving board thing was going on.
Fantastic funny story from a small town where my family lives and where i have lived. And very Norwegian. Truth is that this is just one example out of many, concerning budgets. I think that in general Norwegians have stopped believing in estimated costs decades ago. When i see a number presented for projects like this i automatically know that the final cost is going to be 2 or 10 times the estimation. Or in this extreme case 30 times the estimate. True for most countries nowdays i would think. And this is an example of what the whole series kinda touch in on. Norwegian naitivity, the trust in society bordering on stupidity, how small of a country we really are, how easy it is to get forgiveness if you respond in «the right way» and how relativly «small» matters can get blown out of proportions. The whole of Norway laughed at this news story at the time and thought «what a silly bunch of people in Hamar». I can assure you, most of the 30 000 people in Hamar didnt find it quite as amuzing as the rest of Norway at the time :) And then in balance you have ep 5 that explaines how close we came to setting off USA and Russia in a full nuclear war. Most people have heard of the Cuban missile crisis, not many know this ep5-story outside of Norway i believe. Genius way of presenting stories from Norway in a true Ylvis style. Hope you do the rest as well.👍
I love Ylvis, they are awesome, they are also the ones who made the song/video What does the fox say PS The population of Hamar the town with the infamous dive tower is 28k. Totally worth it, diving is very popular here, especially death diving
On the question of whether Norway is rich the answer is yes. We have the 4th highest GDP per Capita where as the UK is nr. 27. And while yes that is a stat that does often favor smaller states our nominal GDP still places us as nr. 24 in the world despite our population being only 5.5 million. We also have our sovereign wealth fund which is the biggest in the world at around 1.7 billion USD which if you do the math means the Norwegian government essentially owns about 1.5% of all publicly traded stocks in the world... Quite recently we also discovered the worlds largest phosphate deposit in the world as well which basically doubled the known phosphate resources in the world. This deposit at current market prices would be worth 24 trillion USD... So in short, yes we're rich, and likely to become even richer once we start digging up that phosphate...
Oh man! The gays fault!?! 😂I wasn't expecting that! 😂😂😂 Any way. Stories from norway are so amazingly good! And the BEST way to present the world with norwegian news!! 👏👏👏 As someone else said, nah, norwegian politicians aren't THAT corrupt. Compared to the rest of the world. Other countries would laugh at out level of "corruption". The biggest problem we got is that the politicians take advantages of the system. Not making them more rich per say, but does save them money. So yeah, baby-corruptions 🤭 The big problem here is really the norwegian naivety. I personally think that it's really a problem thay it's more important for us to be trustworthy then to be suspicious towards others 🤦♀️ And I actually do think that Ylvis did kind of touch upon the problem, but it's not highlighted. In the tango fantastiq part it's really easy to hear that the engineers are NOT Norwegians. They speak some kind of eastern European. And not to blame anyone (how norwegian of me), we do know that the level dishonesty is way higher in that part of Europe. And they do love to take the advantage of the norwegian naivety. And ofcourse, using a architect that only care about his work and not the budget also help 😂 Like a typical artist! 😂 Oh, yeah, and kroner does mean crowns 👑 And yes, norway is more rich then UK, per capital. And a funfact at the end: It was EXSTREMLY cold shooting the Sink the tower part! It was HORRIBLE!! 😂 I can't wait to see your next reaction!
Im an architect but have no personal experience with this guy, but he reminds me a lot of many architects i have worked with...unfortunately, always so extra, haha
yeah, but I didn't know that was a joke song, I didn't know they were comedians and didn't know they had a show, lol, you guys introduced me to all that. I'm sure most of the world is unaware of how talented they truly are
nah not corruption, this is a crazy example but its not unusual that public projects goes waaaaayyy beyond budget, often because local politicians are often gullible and doesn't really have any technological insight, and they have very secure jobs so there's no consequences for fking up
Hey Paul, I have the files for the series with proper English subtitles if you're interested. I can fetch a dropbox link for you if you'd like :) I tried joining the discord server, but the link failed. I'm too annoyed with the translation errors haha Episode 5 is my favorite btw! It's about the Andøya Rocket incident, almost triggering a nuclear war! The songs are bangers!
@@mouseclick92 do the files have translated subtitles for the Norwegian songs? Sometimes when the songs in Norwegian they don't translate in the captions. Which I know in episode 7 most of the songs are in norsk
Norway is super corrupt, we just have so much money it is not felt by people. We just hear about government building projects always ending up costing 3000% over budget. The word corruption is not even used. It is sickening to see how much is squandered, while those who's got less gets the bill with raised prices and inflation. Our power is double the price denmark pays for buying power from Norway. We produce it, killing off one river at the time, we pay the price so Preben and Mathias can make big money on power sales to other countries, otherwise they wouldn't buy and make private people rich, none of it is shared. Powermarket in Norway was privatized and went staright to hell because the government wouldn't help the communes, even if they made electricity
I think you are right. Norway is probably much more corrupt than most people think. Why else would all projects end up so much more expensive than planned, and why wouldn't the politicians take advantage when Norwegians are so naive? Otherwise, it is no secret that the politicians engage in friend services; they distribute tax payers money to their friends in various organizations.
Norway is not "super corrupt." Let's not get carried away. Relative to other countries, Norway is very low on corruption. Notice also how much people care about corruption in Norway, not just the people, but the people in power themselves. Last year we had several scandals over stuff that wouldn't raise any eyebrows in most countries in the world. We can always do better, but we're doing quite well relatively speaking.
@@Selendeki Eva Joly has worked as a corruption hunter in France. She knows Norwegian conditions well both because she was born and raised in Norway, but also because she has worked closely with the Norwegian government with the aim of preparing the regulations against corruption in Norway. She strongly warns that Norway is very vulnerable to corruption precisely because of people like you, who imagine that Norway has some kind of built-in resistance to corruption. The naivety in this country is great, and no one is going to tell me that there are not enough psychopaths with power in Norway as well, as in most other places. She criticizes the Norwegian system, and points out that Norway is obliged to follow international regulations, which several of our politicians obviously do not do.
