This is so satisfying. I'm crying and I'm not even lying. Everything that I listen to (be it dj smokey or other phonk producers and even genres or even a widely unknown soundcloud retro trap scene which also mixes old game samples into this, or the flashy nonsical cover art with purple drank guns and cars that I fell in love with and started doing myself) is somehow tied to the older music that I couldn't quite grasp and find before. Now its all clear all my music taste has influences from h-town style, thank you.
After watching both the Memphis, and this documentary, this is exactly how I feel. I made so many connections between the music I listen to now and the music that came before. It feels like my taste has come full circle.
The mid 90's through early 2000's was a great time to be alive man! One of my favorite screwed up tracks was Bone's "Extasy." Me and my boys would smoke out the ride and just get lost on some screw tapes...
Im from Cali but got sent to live in Houston with my auntie at 13 for a year. I fell in love with the culture slabs, screwed music, everything. Much love to H town from the Bay Area 🤟🏽
Dj Screw, UGK , and Geto Boys are so essential. Like in the Memphis doc you made, there really is almost a cult vibe like black metal has. That was a great analogy.
Josh WW Willie D has a song called, Guess My Religion. Where he disses christianity and mocks it. When I was lost, I didn't know what he was talking about. But now that I serve the Most High, I now understand. His religion is Satanism. Most of these cats made deals with the devil, they even admit it. They are freemasons. The symbolism is all there. I hope they repent, because this world is almost going to end. And we are all going to be judged.
Yoooo fooo im the Phaaroooe from souf park!!! "U hoes caint fade street milllitarrryyyy Full blooded niggas from houstone texassss...." Mayyne thats nostalgic mayne fr

K-Rino is not just Houston’s, but the best kept secret in Hip-Hop history. When you listen to K, he paints a picture in your mind. He will make you rewind or listen to the entire song over just to grasp the intense wordplay, and storytelling. Not to mention his extremely clear annunciation and delivery. I see each word in my mind as he is flowing out the speakers. He dropped 7, 5 mic or star worthy albums on the same day. Type K-Rino Big 7 in the search bar. True fans of lyricism, subject matter, and concepts will not be disappointed.
Blake Barton agree. Talkin Loud and Lyrical Grind with Z-Ro also go hard. There’s an interview where Ro says K is his only influence in the rap game. Sad thing is everyone knows Z-Ro, but prolly only half know K-Rino
Dj Screw & Dj Magic Mike changed my whole perception on music, and Dj’ing. Two legends! I kicked it with Big Moe when he came to Memphis, it was me, my partna E-Fly, Lester Pace & Big Moe with his folks in a big ass van.. he was real laid back & cool af.. RIP Big Moe!
With most hip hop content on RUclips being geared towards very mainstream artists everyone already knows everything about, it's refreshing to see output about more niche and underground rap like this and memphis. Keep up the good work bro.
Excellent work, Dallas here always had love for the Screwston, TX. The doc is well made and incredibly informative, now to get lost on some of those recommendations and get nostalgic
I have nearly 500 songs on my phone and most of em are screwed up or slowed n reverb by myself. I'll forever be thankful for Screw doing his thing n creatin a whole new genre that transcends any other makin a track deeper or even better than it was. Rip a true legend of music.
Fantastic documentary my dude! I fell in love with Chopped n Screwed music some 10-15 yr ago, and have always loved the atmosphere and vibes it creates. Just last year I discovered digital DJ software and started playing around with it and mixing my own favorites from that era. It didn't take me long to discover the love of mixing and creating the type of music i spent so much time searching for and collecting. It's no surprise to me that DJ Screw was losing sleep over it as I find myself regularly dodging sleep staying up way to late bangin out mixes lol. I will always be thankful to DJ Screw for the inspiration that led me into this world, RIP big homie!
Thank you for this video, this is one of the most important scenes in the world now, and all thanks to him. Thank you from the bottom of all of our hearts for this well made, thoughtful documentary. You captured my childhood and community, thank you!
Feels good to see the reach screw achieved out here! I grew up listening to all of this and have met most of these guys. It's crazy how real everybody keeps it!
Off da chain mayne! I remember as a young boppa in H-town buying those gray cassettes bruh. When cd's came out, I would hustle down to Soundwaves and pick up the latest Screw and other screwed mixtapes from Houston artists. Great video mayne.. Thanks for the Luv...
When I first saw this as a suggestion I wasn’t sure, but I was happily impressed by this documentary. You represented the impact H Town and Texas has on current Hip Hop
Sometimes it’s those on the outside (on the other side of the world) looking in, that have so much passion & enthusiasm for a subject, they dedicate their talents & time with extensive research to give us what we didn’t know we needed. Documentaries like this is golden. I’m Australian too, I can feel the passion he has for this music just like all of you. Im still searching & it’s like a goldmine, every track I find. I’m most passionate with Memphis rap & just starting to get into Texas rap.
I started listening to Houston rap in 1999. The only way for me to get the latest mixtapes at the time were through Bearshare or Kazaa. A few years later I joined the Air Force and traveled to Houston, went into a music store and felt like a kid in a candy store. I must have bought 30 mixtapes that day. My favorites were Chamillionaire, Paul Wall, UGK, Slim Thug, Rasaq, 50/50 Twin, Lil Ron, Young Redd, Fat Pat, Big Pokey, SPM, but the all-time best for me has got to be Lil Flip. Check out Flip's dedication song called R.I.P. Screw: I met Screw in 9-4 at a Fat Pat show Back when Club Unique, use to be stadium bowl I walked up to his car with a cassette in my hand Then I freestyled for him 'cause this could be my only chance Me and my partner Jason, we started doing mix tapes We both smiled cause we knew this could be our big break Then Screw wrote his number down and said hit him next week Get your list together, and pick all your beats Well time went by and my best friend died Rest in peace Jason dog I wish your ass was alive A couple months later, my second cousin passed So that made me sit down and realize what I had I dropped "Diamonds In Yo Face" and "Buy The Car, Buy The House" And Screw saw me at a show and said boy you went off Two hours later, I was making tapes at his house And didn't nobody go to sleep until the mics went off
Much better than the Netflix doc. Good job! Would have been cool if you shouted Blackat that made a lot of H-Town covers like the SUC, Fat Pat, and many others. He passed away last year. Overall this was great though.
@@aaidren Don't think there is a spot you can see it all but off top he's done Z-ro "look what you did to me", Big Mello " Soutside Story", Willie D "Play Witcha Mama" Fat Pat "Ghetto Dreams, Throwed in da Game", Lil Flip "The Leprechaun", PWall/Cham "Get ya mind correct", Street Military "Steel Gangstaz" and many others.
The fact that people ask me all the time what part of Texas I’m from but I’m from Alabama that’s how much I love everything about Texas …I love you for making this documentary #6thTimeWatching
Slow Loud and Bangin is a term Trae tha Truth came up with when he named his mixtape series. The term Slab comes from the car sitting so low to the ground it was touching the touching the concrete aka SLAB of concrete. Thats why we used to say ill holla at you on the slab. Meaning ill holla at you when i see you in the streets, the boulevard.
This was like reliving my teens! I was born in Indiana, but I'm 42 and been in Houston since I was 6. Houston is home. I watched all this happening before my eyes. The music took me back, I promise. This was well done, thought out and edited. Thank you for acknowledging our city's contributions to the music scene, because it's wider than many may think. I know that I would take orders for screw tapes from my friends in Indiana and bring them to them when I would visit Christmas and summer breaks. All my family and friends knew what was up way before anyone else because I definitely had them listening to all Houston's music when we were together. It made a couple people want to become rappers, lol. I definitely enjoyed this. Thanks again!
@@mjalvarado6101 I need an original one from me too. One summer my cousin came down and stole them all then went back to Indiana and sold them. I’m still pissed.
@@jocaquinjohnson1159 where was Texas' evidence then? There wasn't one shred of physical evidence against Carlos and they wouldn't even let his side present evidence. Did not know that as a child DJ Screw was a classical pianist. Some going so far as to say he was a prodigy which I'm sure helped with his mix tapes. When you are slowing down audio you are changing the key of the song. His classical training must have helped him distinguish between what would work and what would not.
When Screw said it's only a Screw tape of Screw did it. Ppl kinda misunderstand that statement. At the time he said that screwed and chopped wasn't a style. It was simply Screw tapes, indicating it was a dj screw mix tape (which showcased his art form). And thru the 90s all kinda ppl has started making slowed tapes and calling them screw tapes. U could find em on gas stations and everything. So Screw was trying to let ppl know not all tapes they see are done by him and trying to stop ppl from capitalizing on his name. After his death Screwed and Chopped (or Chopped and Screwed) became a STYLE of music. So when Screw said that it had a different meaning than what ppl think.

Can't forget about Devin the dude
Bro not only does your historic h-town knowledge make this video fire, your video editing skills make it pop. nice job man.
Houston born and raised . My favorite has always been Street Military. Them fools go hard.
Gotdam right!!
Street Military >>> NWA, idc what nobody says.
I was about to comment about them. Pharaoh was one of my favorite sad that he lock up.

Bruh this was a certified Hood Classic. Keep coming back to this doc. Honestly hope you're making more. Would love to see you dive into Dubstep, Grime, Acid Rap or G-Funk you did here. Either way really appreciate this.
would love a acid rap or G-Funk ERA
who makes actual acid rap music? the only acid rap I know is the Chance album...
@@trench900 Detroit rappers like Esham and Natas. They were really the inspiration for alot of artists like D12, Eminem and more.
K-rino is the best to ever do it hands down
k-rino and z-ros game goes on chopped and screwed by dj screw or regular is def a fav
Blake Barton agree. Talkin Loud and Lyrical Grind with Z-Ro also go hard. There’s an interview where Ro says K is his only influence in the rap game. Sad thing is everyone knows Z-Ro, but prolly only half know K-Rino

Houston has always had a rich musical culture back in the day Houston was the only city in the south where a black artists could record an album
Love the focus on southern rap and think a doc on the '90s New Orleans scene would be 🔥
Dj Screw & Dj Magic Mike changed my whole perception on music, and Dj’ing.
Two legends!
I kicked it with Big Moe when he came to Memphis, it was me, my partna E-Fly, Lester Pace & Big Moe with his folks in a big ass van.. he was real laid back & cool af.. RIP Big Moe!
Mike did so with Bass music when he brought the house style music from Michigan area and incorporated into bass music
Can't forget about Jam Pony Express Djs as well
With most hip hop content on RUclips being geared towards very mainstream artists everyone already knows everything about, it's refreshing to see output about more niche and underground rap like this and memphis. Keep up the good work bro.
I’m proud to be from Houston Tx,grew up on screwed & chopped music..love it so much I started screwing and chopped music myself 😎
R.I.P DJ Screw
The south needs more recognition
I am a South Houston native. I love this documentary ❤️ it brought me back man! I'll be sharing this video to other Houston rap fans.
Excellent work, Dallas here always had love for the Screwston, TX. The doc is well made and incredibly informative, now to get lost on some of those recommendations and get nostalgic
Wow!!!! From a native born Houstonian, you did a great job!!! Simply Fantastic
thank you
Streets need an entire documentary movie on the SoundCloud era so far of 2012-2020 by next year
Working on it !
You captured my childhood and community, thank you!
rip DJ Screw such a legend, i named my skate part chopped and screwed in his honor.
Im 38yrs old, this brought back so many memories growing up 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Sometimes it’s those on the outside (on the other side of the world) looking in, that have so much passion & enthusiasm for a subject, they dedicate their talents & time with extensive research to give us what we didn’t know we needed. Documentaries like this is golden. I’m Australian too, I can feel the passion he has for this music just like all of you. Im still searching & it’s like a goldmine, every track I find. I’m most passionate with Memphis rap & just starting to get into Texas rap.
I need a girl who look at me like ESG look at his lean
💯💯😅😅

We all had that look at one point lmao I remember when I got handed my first double cup I had the same ass look 🤣
Screw:
I met Screw in 9-4 at a Fat Pat show
Back when Club Unique, use to be stadium bowl
I walked up to his car with a cassette in my hand
Then I freestyled for him 'cause this could be my only chance
Me and my partner Jason, we started doing mix tapes
We both smiled cause we knew this could be our big break
Then Screw wrote his number down and said hit him next week
Get your list together, and pick all your beats
Well time went by and my best friend died
Rest in peace Jason dog I wish your ass was alive
A couple months later, my second cousin passed
So that made me sit down and realize what I had
I dropped "Diamonds In Yo Face" and "Buy The Car, Buy The House"
And Screw saw me at a show and said boy you went off
Two hours later, I was making tapes at his house
And didn't nobody go to sleep until the mics went off
Then what happened? Can’t leave us hanging man.
Lil Flip ft Bizzy Bone
No Z-Ro?
Much better than the Netflix doc. Good job! Would have been cool if you shouted Blackat that made a lot of H-Town covers like the SUC, Fat Pat, and many others. He passed away last year. Overall this was great though.
Brettanomyces 707 where can we view his work?

Trae took that from dat boy grace . He started it first with his underground funk s.l.a.b releases then trae started putting his out

I need an original screw tape from you
@@mjalvarado6101 I need an original one from me too. One summer my cousin came down and stole them all then went back to Indiana and sold them. I’m still pissed.

Screw tapes were everywhere bruh in da 90s n early 00s played on radios too. Houston is beautiful
This is actually really high quality! My brother put me on to Houston rap when I was a kid, won’t stop listening
Whole video was extremely thorough and amazing, despite comments saying you left people out. Houston is just too big, it would take two videos to cover it all. I remember 6 years ago trying to understand what "lean" was and then stumbling upon DJ Screw's music and it changed my taste forever. Can't wait for more videos like this
THANK YOU for your research and work on this documentary. A lot of kids who love "slowed and reverbed" rap need to know about the roots of the music they like and this doc is a good telling of the history of chopped n screwed. Respect from this H Town native 🤘

Did not know that as a child DJ Screw was a classical pianist. Some going so far as to say he was a prodigy which I'm sure helped with his mix tapes. When you are slowing down audio you are changing the key of the song. His classical training must have helped him distinguish between what would work and what would not.
Yeah understanding scales and keys is pretty helpful in layering tracks
So when Screw said that it had a different meaning than what ppl think.
iv never seen a documentary bout Screwston as dope as this one
