I totally agree! I watched their Careers as well. I was 23 when this match was played. Now I’m 56. It’s crazy how fast the years fly by. Sampras was so dominating winning 14 or so majors. I would never had imagined one day a several decades later we’d have over 60 won between 3 players. Blows me away. The Borg/McEnroe matches were awesome back in the day. I’d be glued to the tv screen.
Stunning performance by Lendl against the young gun Sampras, Lendl was such a great indoor/carpet player... and those blistering and accurate shots with that little racquet were outstanding! 👏👏👏
Quel Champion!
I remember watching this match live. Not a lot of experts were picking Lendl to win this match even though Lendl was probably the best indoors player of the past 10 years.
Of the two players, the only one who would have been a champion nowadays is Lendl... Sampras strokes were great but not precise enough for today's game.
This was an important win for Lendl, having lost to Sampras at the US Open a few months earlier. However, his great days were clearly coming to an end and after Philadelphia he would only win another five tournaments over the next three years before retiring in 1994, although had great wins over Stich and Becker at the US Opens of 1991 and 1992 respectively.
and Sampras/Lendl would have kicked Rod Laver's butt, and Rod Laver would have kicked Don Budge's butt and Don Budge would kicked Bill Tilden's butt. Why is there also someone like you making the same comment stupidly comparing players from different eras, without taking into the inevitable advances in equipment, surfaces, diets, conditioning, training, travel arrangements, etc.?
You're a bit stupid, aren't you? 😅No, today's players would NOT kick Lendl and Sampras' ass, because today's players would not play the way they play today, because they would not have the equipment and the training methods of today. And the players of that time would not play today as they did then, because they would play with today's equipment and train according to today's training methods. Incidentally, the fact that players today play the way they do is thanks to the players of that time, because sport only develops thanks to previous generations and their experience. If you saw Lendl and Sampras today, they would be in the top 5, because what always prevails, regardless of material and training methods, is talent and skill. To understand this, you don't need to activate more than one brain cell.
2 of the all-time greats. It seems weird having watched both of them in their prime, knowing this is already 33 years old !
Could they play with today's raquets?
lendl not in his prime , in his latest year

Ivan Lendl the tennis master
Wonderful Picture Quality , thanks so much
Lendl finished off with 3 (!) aces in a row. Against Sampras. Kind of shows, why he was considered one of the mentally strongest players ever.
I remember watching this match live. Not a lot of experts were picking Lendl to win this match even though Lendl was probably the best indoors player of the past 10 years.
I could build the perfect player with these two guys:
- Serve: Sampras
- Return: Lendl
- Forehand: Lendl / running forehand Sampras
- Backhand: topspin Lendl / slice Sampras
- Passing shot: Lendl
- Lob: Lendl
- Drop shot: forehand Lendl / backhand Sampras
- Volley / Serve-Volley: Sampras
- Overhead: Sampras
- Endurance: Lendl
- Speed: Sampras
- Atheticism: Sampras
- Footwork: clay Lendl / hard & grass Sampras
- Strategy: clay, indoor & medium speed hard Lendl / fast hard & grass Sampras
- Mental strength: Sampras
- Work ethics: Lendl
You said it's the Lob. Of all shots, the most potent imo was his topspin lob.
Thanks for publishing it.
Great upload I was really looking forward to !!
Pete’s game is so brilliant… GOAT of beauty
Yeah, his game is so fluid, so elegant, even more than Federer I would say
I was at this match with 3 friends.
They can play anyone
Must be a good memory. I was only born once even Sampras didn't play anymore haha
Ivan is the father of modern tennis, his forehead is second to none
I don't know about his forehead, but his forehand surely was great 🙂
@@heinebohmann1566forehead , lol
Arguably, Lendl’s last great match. His career declined after this.
Insane quality
..viva Lendl
Two absolute legends when tennis was not about doping
Can anyone tell me why Ivan returned in 91 to his old heavy adidas racquet after he played in 90 with this new one
Great upload!!!
Two legends...
Lendl is first GOAT of modern tennis; Sampras the 2nd GOAT of modern tennis; and Federer is the third and the last one so far.
@1:20:10
Lendl didn’t shake hands with the Ump.
I remember watching this entire match , I live 15 minutes from where the spectrum was
Sampras’s backhand is the better shot, what is he talking about?
If Sampras Prostaff is 85...Lendl must be using like a 65.
82
74. About 10% oversize compared to a typical wood racquet.

Haha! Nonsense
Old Lendl beats a prime Sampras. Just like Old Novak beats Carlos.
Lendl could play with today's raquets
This is exactly moment lendls student became the master. Lendl never beta Sampras again

Lendl did beat Sampras again in the Philadelphia-semis in 1993.

На 2x нормально смотреть
Today players on TV will kick these guys’ butts.
Cant compare, its like comparing a 1990 F1 car to a 2024 F1 car.
