    An old gardeners tip. Plant marigolds and targetes( sounds like Tageeties) when you speak it) around your tomatoes. The scent from these flowers attracts pollinators, but stops the insects that destroy the plants. I'm learning that everything serves some purpose. The ants are usually cleaning up some food etc. You are a great gardener.

    I have a sour orange tree and found various ways to use the fruit. My favorite after juicing for me, method is to soak the peels covered in water with a 1/2 cup sugar mixed in. Stir everyday until it is vinegar in about two weeks. Strain and use for window cleaner, counter top cleaner, BUT my FAVORITE way is to pour some over the nasty red and bull ants that build a home in my yard. It is ACID so it destroys their lovely little homes wonderfully.

    Citrus oil is used to break down adhesive. When my hubby was sent home with an IV, they also sent wipes with orange oil on them in the bandage change kits.
    They worked great for the medical tape removal. Lemon oil works on getting labels off stuff too.

    Thak you for the great video! I do the same without boiling the peels, but fermenting them just in water for several weeks. I just put the peels in a bucket with plain water, cover the bucket with a lid to push all peels under the water (otherwise they mold) and let them sit there for at least 3 weeks, better more. Then the mixture is ready.

    I have an old Kool-aid gallon bottle, and I took the peels of a grapefruit and put it into the water after filling it all the way to the top. At first I was using banana peels but when I started using the orange peels my plants became stronger, grew up straighter, became greener. I'm trying to grow bell peppers, I have a basil plant and all of it was rather slow growing and getting scotched in the sun until this point. So I'm excited I found that hack about a week ago now on my own. I follow a lady who showed putting a banana in the rain water on TikTok so I just wanted to try Grapefruit to see what will happen. And yeah actually I do notice the bugs that was eating at the leaves stopped. 🤷🏾‍♀️

    I sun-dry the peels, blitz it to a powder and sprinkle directly on the soil for my tomato plants which are especially susceptible to aphids. The powder smells very intense coz I guess once the water evaporates from the peels, the oils in the peels become very concentrated.

    I’ve heard that orange peels also repel the good bugs, good bacteria, and earth worms though… have you not found this to be an issue? I know you mentioned to avoid butterfly gardens, but don’t we still want worms and pollinators hanging around our veggies and fruit crops?

    • @WildFloridian
      @WildFloridian  2 года назад +7

      These are great questions! So on orange peels... the limonene breaks down pretty quickly so it is more of a spot treatment pesticide versus a mass pesticide to rid an area of all life. This has been reviewed because there was a lot of misconception on the ability to compost oranges and other citrus. What they found was that worms took longer to break down orange peels and worm colonies were not destroyed but could be impacted by the acid and limonene in the very short term. The general benefit is more as a fertilizer more than anything. I still have loads of bugs in my garden. But I'm super wary of putting it near my caterpillars. I'm a big believer that right crop and variety at the right time of year is the biggest deterrent to pest infestation. The other thing is that I only did this once in the season... since I don't have another crop of oranges, I won't be doing this again until next year. Cheers! 😄

      She did say that in this video that to be careful not to spray it where your flowers and plants that you don't want the good bugs damaged in any way. I think I would instead of pouring the juice on I would take a light spray bottle and spray it just on the leaves of the plants or the base like the base of squash to keep boars away seems to me that would be more effective and ecologically balanced you got to use something anything you use is going to affect the entire ecological system so this is not toxic and people think that just because something is organic which is all natural that it can't be toxic this is not true there are a lot of organic fertilizers and organic pesticides out there that actually are toxic but they're pure and natural

      You should be able to wash them off. In commercial industry oranges are washed, juiced and orange peels are made into cattle feed. The EU is a large purchaser of orange peel cattle feed. So most orange crops will follow EU guidance and controls.

      You should be able to wash the pesticides off any oranges. And orange pesticides are generally focused on eliminating the citrus psyllid. Orange blossoms and therefore oranges are the largest nectar and pollen source for pollinators in Florida. And yes home grown would be the best for knowing what’s on your food.
