I love how the different segments add to the song. Maybe it was chosen based on rhythm but I love that it starts with the monkey watch (time ticking), has equal amounts of "feminine" and "masculine" themes (sleepovers, cheer squad, dancing, football, fishing, wood chopping) and how the bridge has a girl and a boy doing transformation tricks. There's the topic of "not quite human" with the robots (especially the part with "this body that they stuck me in") and the bridge leading into soldiers marching and the repeating of the the "masculine" themes like chopping wood, fishing and then the varying styles of the bits start with the princess dresses and the color swaps. If I was still in that "adaptation course" I used to love at uni, I would write an essay about this "transcription".

The lumberjack minigame, with the large bear/wolf chopping every piece of wood the smaller but more numerous cats place in front of it, is chock full of messaging. The cats are attracted to the wood-chopper, even going so far in the game to call up more of their kind to come watch the show as he exerts himself for their benefit; the gendered undertones of the flexible observers and the strong, impressive chopper, and what it says about the interaction that the chopper never pauses, never turns down a job, but hacks straight through every piece they put before him no matter how large, swinging his axe over and over and over... In this video, the minigame is put to work illustrating lines from a song involving gender-performance and the tedium and exhaustion of its demands. Its a strong pick for the very first lyric, "I've been feeling lightheaded since I lost enough weight to fit back in my skin" - perhaps the bear has felt this pressure to excise what looks out of line, and sacrificing his own well-being to fit his role attractively. This is further pushed when the game returns for the line "lost in what you think of me", implying that either of these parties is only doing what they are doing because the other expects it of them, to the point that they've lost sight of the end goal and are only thinking of reputation among this company. "Am I pretty enough to lie to?" continues to hammer this point of physical attractiveness outweighing telling the truth, or striving for this goal to hide from being hurt, and the game appears again for part of the instrumental interlude where the refrains grow quicker and more frantic. We finally get a follow-up to the previous line this was shown with, answering the question of what they would be pretty enough for with "to fucking die" - a stirring and urgently evocative question, and as the song reaches its rapid conclusion, we get a final clip of this game, over the line "little me in a big world", showing perhaps that the bear feels outnumbered and overwhelmed despite his apparent capability, just by the sheer unending pressure around him. This big world makes him feel like he needs to shrink to fit, to be pretty, and there is a feeling that he needs to be lied to or die, its that serious. Definitely a great choice for its embedded story and theme of self image, reliance on outside validation, and fear of not measuring up.
The cheer readers are an interesting bunch - in rhythm heaven, they have the best of intentions, motivating their fellow students to study hard and do well on their tests, but they do this by loudly choreographed chanting in the library, prompting a poor execution to give you a side character's complaint that they can't focus on their work with all this. Themes of intellect, teamwork, misused intentions and knowledge pair with the Will Wood lines "Flower petals and feathers tether me to the ground, pound for pound"; "now you got me thinking-" "and I know that I'm wrong, but I love that you're on my side when I cross that line" "eating your prosthetic meat you're anesthetic", and the whispering at the end. This confers a sense of unknown knowledge, esoteric phrases, and taking advantage of logic connections - we begin with the pretty imagery of soft and delicate things, flowers and feathers, immediately linked with a heavy immovable feeling. They're a good shout for the thinking line, being in such a high concentration of books, but its not overused. I really like the last two lines they're used for, a self aware declamation of guilt but sheepishly not ashamed because at least its a bad thing in company, and a homophonic opener for a tone changed last verse that goes on to invoke quantum physics. The eating of prosthetic meat is a great bit of poetry, suggesting that there's not something of organic substance , or perhaps a self-cannibalizing aspect, where you find yourself numbing and anesthetized by the words your food is couched in. There's really something to think about with every combination of lines and imagery scenarios

I think the sleepover and the rows of monkeys pretending to sleep alongside the girl is a symbol of childhood gossip, furtive secrets about crushes and mysterious feelings, and so forth. There's a great parallel to draw with the phrase "monkey see, monkey do" and the human habit of social mimicry, paired with these lines about acceptance from others who should see you as one of them.
Pop star concert- this game is paired with the higher-pitched smoother note-wavering vocal tune at the start, right before the lyrics begin; when we enter word territory, it returns to accompany the line of the second half of the first chorus, "I wish I could be a girl and that way you'd wish I could be your girlfriend boyfriend", easily paralleling the tendency for idols to sell their fans by cultivating this adoring relationship. In the second chorus, we see this game again, this time for only the first half of this familiar line's first repetition in chorus 2, the following "...you'd wish I could be your girlfriend/boyfriend" being illustrated by the ice girls this time - still maintaining that theme of performers being the object of wishes in this fantasy way. Worth noting that the first two times we see this starlet's game, she's leading the crowd of monkeys in demonstrating simple clapping patterns, whereas the third and final time we see her, its much later in the night and the crowd is roaring up, shaking with enthusiasm, almost beyond her control despite her being physically lifted by the stage. It reminds me of Chappel Roan giving us the path to make her famous, and then the overwhelming behavior of fanatics trying to get closer than she bargained for - the tendency to assume entitlement to the personal space of public figures like this, often not even considering their safety, so blinded by our own excitement to reach out to the stars. The song gets more frantic as it continues, so perhaps this later use is asking again, really asking, in the new and changing context, so you still wish you could be a girl? In THIS way, you want to be THIS girl, when this is her situation? This way, with shaking arms and standing nervously under the spotlight while the crowd leaps out of your reach?
The lumberjack minigame, with the large bear/wolf chopping every piece of wood the smaller but more numerous cats place in front of it, is chock full of messaging. The cats are attracted to the wood-chopper, even going so far in the game to call up more of their kind to come watch the show as he exerts himself for their benefit; the gendered undertones of the flexible observers and the strong, impressive chopper, and what it says about the interaction that the chopper never pauses, never turns down a job, but hacks straight through every piece they put before him no matter how large, swinging his axe over and over and over... In this video, the minigame is put to work illustrating lines from a song involving gender-performance and the tedium and exhaustion of its demands. Its a strong pick for the very first lyric, "I've been feeling lightheaded since I lost enough weight to fit back in my skin" - perhaps the bear has felt this pressure to excise what looks out of line, and sacrificing his own well-being to fit his role attractively. This is further pushed when the game returns for the line "lost in what you think of me", implying that either of these parties is only doing what they are doing because the other expects it of them, to the point that they've lost sight of the end goal and are only thinking of reputation among this company. "Am I pretty enough to lie to?" continues to hammer this point of physical attractiveness outweighing telling the truth, or striving for this goal to hide from being hurt, and the game appears again for part of the instrumental interlude where the refrains grow quicker and more frantic. We finally get a follow-up to the previous line this was shown with, answering the question of what they would be pretty enough for with "to fucking die" - a stirring and urgently evocative question, and as the song reaches its rapid conclusion, we get a final clip of this game, over the line "little me in a big world", showing perhaps that the bear feels outnumbered and overwhelmed despite his apparent capability, just by the sheer unending pressure around him. This big world makes him feel like he needs to shrink to fit, to be pretty, and there is a feeling that he needs to be lied to or die, its that serious. Definitely a great choice for its embedded story and theme of self image, reliance on outside validation, and fear of not measuring up.
The cheer readers are an interesting bunch - in rhythm heaven, they have the best of intentions, motivating their fellow students to study hard and do well on their tests, but they do this by loudly choreographed chanting in the library, prompting a poor execution to give you a side character's complaint that they can't focus on their work with all this. Themes of intellect, teamwork, misused intentions and knowledge pair with the Will Wood lines "Flower petals and feathers tether me to the ground, pound for pound"; "now you got me thinking-" "and I know that I'm wrong, but I love that you're on my side when I cross that line" "eating your prosthetic meat you're anesthetic", and the whispering at the end. This confers a sense of unknown knowledge, esoteric phrases, and taking advantage of logic connections - we begin with the pretty imagery of soft and delicate things, flowers and feathers, immediately linked with a heavy immovable feeling. They're a good shout for the thinking line, being in such a high concentration of books, but its not overused. I really like the last two lines they're used for, a self aware declamation of guilt but sheepishly not ashamed because at least its a bad thing in company, and a homophonic opener for a tone changed last verse that goes on to invoke quantum physics. The eating of prosthetic meat is a great bit of poetry, suggesting that there's not something of organic substance , or perhaps a self-cannibalizing aspect, where you find yourself numbing and anesthetized by the words your food is couched in. There's really something to think about with every combination of lines and imagery scenarios
