I use my wheel in the same standing fashion you do, working from the straight edge of the table with tools next to me instead of across the wheel from me. It makes so much sense.

Firstly, your videos are helpful just by letting us watch your repetitive hand movements and your style of throwing. For me, seeing a different technique and how/why it's used to create a specific shape or form is very advantageous for the advancement of my own abilities. Secondly, I think this style of video is great! Many youtubers seem to feel burned out when they're constantly trying to appease a certain audience. Just do you! We'll keep watching! If there are some recurring questions being left in the comments, maybe you could write those down as talking points during these non-live video sessions. Otherwise, you do a fantastic job of explaining as you go.....type of clay, weight, tools, etc.... I think your channel is REALLY informative and helpful! Thank you for being yourself!

I so appreciate that you are passionate about sharing your technique's so you just babble away to your hearts content, Your fricken ability is off the charts and watching anything you want to throw is a pleasure. Turn that ad thing on and start getting paid for all the video's you've put out here. You're a legit functional potter, with some serious talent, and an excellent teacher for the watchers like me.

I just love watching you throw, and the way you chat and work at the same time blows my mind, it's as though your body is on auto pilot making the bowls and vases, but your mind is on what you are saying, fascinating. Even when you mucked one up you didn't pause, just take it off and Carry on, that is a great lesson to any home potter. Continue please. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes out of the wood kiln, I bet you don't sleep much that night. Good luck by the way. Cheers Bob 🇬🇧

Matt I like watching what and how you make your pieces and the videos you make only because it give me ideas on what I make also. Thats what I believe, all good potters like to do, help others get better. I just made a video with Simon Leach a few days ago on how I made a rotary sieve that can be made at home. The videos that I look for are helping ones and you do that, don't stop doing what your doing. Eddie.

Hey Matt. Sorry to have missed the bowls, your rib technique is fun to watch - I will have to review the detailed video you did a while back explaining the process. With this said, I wonder if you would consider instructing a bit more as you throw your pot. Explain what your hands are doing, how you shape the form, and size of thrown pieces as the camera fools us to thinking it is larger than it really is...Potters, no matter the skill level, never tire of learning techniques - that’s the main reason we watch videos.
As for earning ad revenue, you should know my thoughts on this. GO FOR IT. You have justly earned a following and reputation that attracts advertising sponsors. You make money, they make money WIN -WIN for everyone.

Just finished watching.... You have just spoken the thoughts of every potter, every RUclips potter, and every RUclips(r) for that matter. Honestly, you are most likely the best potter on RUclips right now. Being totally honest, I would say you are an extremely competitive guy, who strives to be at the top of your game... whatever that may be at the time.... And if your effort puts you at the top in your field, even better. Of course you want to be successful. Of course you want to make money.... Your viewers will give you ideas and tell you what they need help with. I say, keep showing your throwing, whilst adding firing, glazing and the finished product. I LOVED those giant vessels that you RUclips(d) from start to finish. I will continue watching, "Liking, commenting, sharing, staying subscribed.... And all the things.!" (JTP quote).;>

I like the throw and chat. I think you just do what you want. You should just make videos of what you do every day. Not necessarily come up with ideas per say.
Live streams are hard to follow sometimes. You start talking and don’t finish a though because a question pops up.
Maybe sometime have a class like and exercise for all of us to do.

Matthew Kelly Pottery I agree with Shane. live chats don't actually do much for me. Where I live it's very isolated so I didn't get proper lessons, it's important to find mentors, have a business plan, have a what pots I am making, keep going, always critics, don't try to live up to others expectations so have your own goals, be extremely polite. Sometimes it is a strain to come up with new ideas.

Hi. You are such a good potter. Please do what you want and continue to share your processes. All process is inspiring and you have the sweetest southern charm ... That doesn't hurt. In fact, some of the gimmicky videos out there get old, and have much less in the way of form and soul than yours. As much as I like how to, the practical side of showing the reality is helpful. I am curious as to the type of wheel you are using, mine is 45 years old and I have been considering a standup, and yours seems to fly. I also am curious if you are mixing your own clay because it looks super plastic and strong. Keep doing what you are doing and thanks.

I recently found you and I like what you have to offer. I disagree with some who said you need to be someone else. I find you as serious about what you’re doing and I’m good with that. If I want funny or other things I can go elsewhere. I want to learn and be good at what I do. I think people might ask you to explain how to make certain things or you might ask what people would like. That will give you an idea but you might just chose what you like. I like that you are being you because you really can’t pretend to be someone else. I’ve been learning for the past 3 1/2 years and I have made a studio in my garage. I’m so in love with making pottery and love the way you explain things. Your take on basic things about throwing setting up your work space are teaching me new things. Thanks for being there. I support you in whatever you decide. Time will reveal which road to take. Remember everybody doesn’t have to like us. Most people live by projecting their unresolved issues anyway.

Hi Matthew - Have you ever watched Simon Leach or Hsin Chuen Lin videos? These guys have no gimmicks and are some of the best out there. You could just turn the camera on and go about your business in the studio and I would find it interesting and I'd learn something. I agree with the other viewer's comment that the gimmicky videos get old after a while. I enjoy some of your earliest videos where you're not talking at all while throwing 15 or 20 pound bowls. • @MatthewKellyPottery
      @MatthewKellyPottery  5 лет назад +2

Thanks for the feedback! As to your question: each show I do is different so I always bring more than I think I will need if humanly possible. In general smaller items sell more often and quicker but you can’t sell the large pricey pieces if you don’t have them. Mugs is a huge must in my experience. Bowls of multiple sizes is another I wouldn’t want to go without. All this also depends on your focus (functional, decorative, etc).

Hi Matthew, Enjoyed that video, only the third one of yours I've seen. I think you should definitely take advantage of the ad revenue when you can, you are providing a service to your audience in teaching us, you are certainly entitled to be compensated for it. There is one potter I watch a lot whom I like very much, Hsin Chuen Lin, he has done hundreds of videos and I've seen most or all of them and have never been bored, not sure how he decides what will be the topic of each video, but it seems to flow naturally... he may show a piece from start to finish, throwing, trimming, decorating, glazing, in a series of videos...I enjoy watching all of the phases. Maybe seeing some of his videos will help you decide how and what you want to film in your own work. btw when you throw a series of different forms as you did here, I'd love to see them lined up together at the end, just to appreciate and be inspired by your variations. Thanks, see you next time!

Hey bro if you're making a living from your pottery and the RUclips monetization would just be an added coin in your pocket, then I would do it! Monetize your videos! The people who are subscribed to you now enjoy what you're doing and the new people that run across your channel will either be the same or not. I would just continue the process you've been doing and try and boost your internet signal so that your live streams have better quality cause it's really cool to be able to interact with you. As an artist who wants to open his own Studio myself and do feel like RUclips is a good platform for assistance it's nice to see someone transitioning and working the process like you're doing. Keep going bro!

I would say that my favorite videos to watch are videos where the creator is doing what they want to do not necessarily what they think someone would want to watch. Kind of like what you were saying with your pottery, you make the style and kind of pottery that you like and enjoy. Watching a person who has a unique talent and skill set do what they were born to do is quite enjoyable regardless of if it is cutting edge content. I enjoy the back and forth of the live feeds but watching an artist create art is why I enjoy your channel. Keep up the good work!

ramble all you want Matt :) everything you do and say always interests me. I do prefer the live streaming, I find it more personal, but the others are fine too. You love to talk and I think you need a bit of `admiration` from your viewers! if that's so then you've got it ok :)

Everyday studio practice is always interesting to watch. Take a look at Simon Leach videos. He's been making daily videos for years. A lot of them are about throwing the same pots over and over again while talking, sharing thoughts and showing throwing tips. His videos got longer and longer but I still watched them years back while I was training the become a potter. It was very useful to watch his hands throw again and again. Jon the potter is a much more recent youtube potter with succes showing everyday studio practice and showing every kiln unloading. On Instagram Saga from Hand and Fire make a huge amount of videos in her stories of every studie aspect sharing every step of all her processes. A daily Vlog sharing a lot of talking and even filming walking her dog. And people still love it. More followers = more people want to buy her pots online and attending classes
Just came across your video today and the only negative thing is the amount of commercials show. They would stop me from following your channel regularly (total of 6 commercials was shown pr video)

I do hope you got a WiFi booster. Just standing there making pots IS a viable platform, AND now that your wood fire kiln is up - and running, so is loading the kiln, setting up the cones, and a discussion of WHY you have gone through the trouble of building a wood fire kiln, and why you choose the glazes you use. In my opinion what should be more important to you is that you're having fun making the videos. If the videos make money- WONDERFUL! but if making the videos is more work than joy - stop making them. It's the JOY you have in what you do that keeps me subscribed.

Last minutes with just throwing and viewing the new kiln progress were the best part. Sorry bud, the rest might have been edited down to the recap sentence.
Good to experiment and reflect though.

sorry if it was too harsh, i really love watching you throw, but maybe you have another audience in mind or editing takes away too much time from real life. thanks matthew for these videos, i watch each one.

No worries about you being too harsh. I have had to learn to deal with all kinds of comments and just do what I feel best. Anyone would go mad doing what the comments say they should do. As long as you got something out of it that’s cool. I know I can’t and won’t satisfy everyone with every video.

I'm not going to be very helpful because any videos I watch I will turn off the sound if the commentary is boring or the music is not to my taste so really it doesn't matter to me. If what someone is saying is of interest to me I'll leave the sound on. If it is a foreign language I will turn the sound off. I watch to observe or learn how things are done and pottery interests me. I did ceramics back in the 70s so a lot of things are the same but pottery is more creative than ceramics. I would like videos that show a piece being make that then follows that piece all the way to the final firing. You have explained there are different clays and pricing. Trivia like that are vey interesting to me although I will probably never do any pottery. I understand why your glaze formations are private. I would do that, too. So I am a subscriber who will watch you make pottery and build your kiln and fire pieces no matter what.

I like watching your videos however, you seem to be overthinking shit. That old saying that you can please some of the people some of the time and none of the people, yada yada.... Make these videos because it makes YOU happy buddy. You'll keep the subscribers that you make happy and get new ones too. Take what you want and leave the rest. The rest of it, meh who cares! I'm watching because you do good work and videos.
