    Master level piece. One of the most challenging difficulty in this is that the composer didn't write any nuance (apart crescendi), and that there is no pause. Then, you have a very hard time figuring out how to play this, since this is still music. So, a big work from the interpret is made to play it in a musical way. Here the performer gives his own nuances, share them with us, while playing a composer that should be more reknowned.

      Shame it's just Mozart this, and Rachmaninoff this. Sorry don't mean to generalize but you understand. Too many composers lay forgotten and too many undeservedly so :(

    • @romainmialon9251
      @romainmialon9251 6 лет назад +5

      vcsgo ru no need, but it is still very useful to tackle a work. If you are a pianist you must know, the nuances of the composer are never quite respected, it is because the interpreter appropriates the work, but before that it is necessary to understand the meaning of the work, and for that the nuances are very important for a real pianist. So there is a lot more work to do when the shades are less indicated, especially in the romantic style. It is the same for the tempo, it allows, even if finally it is not respected, to understand the work and thus better play it.

    This libertine reading of dynamics is first of all a peculiarity (which I actually enjoy), and is secondly due to the recording setup. Vincenzo said he was unhappy with the piano he had had to play (a nasty Yamaha), so he hopes he will get a better instrument for his upcoming Alkan projects.
    By the way, I also uploaded his Quasi Faust, which is truly fantastic, and his Liszt is definitely something that's worth your time! ;)

The sound quality is actually very good; okay, I'm sure everybody would be happier with a sonorous Steinway grand, but that detracts from the value of the disc only to a very little extent. Keep in mind that Alkan was a fascinating genius, and Vincenzo is an astonishing pianist. In two words: highly recommended! :)

    I haven't listened to them that much as I would've liked to, but I highly prefer Martin in the Esquisses above Osborne. He has a harsh, somewhat metallic sound, which is just perfect for those miniatures IMO. Osborne's recording is a HQ Hyperion release, but it's just not as natural and powerful as Martin. It's very good, but primmer. I really don't know the Preludes enough to make a reliable comparison - some of the recordings are available on RUclips I believe so feel free to check them out ;)

    When I first hear Chopin, I was in love with his skills and his proficiency on the piano...
    Then there's Liszt, his musics were so damn mad and some were unplayable, I labelled him as the "piano slayer/God of piano" (alongside with Rachmaninoff). Then there's Alkan, which after hearing (t)his piece - I think he's in the God tier! And I conclude that they (the "God tier" pianist) were all smoking weed.

    it is idiosyncratic when compared to instructions, which there are little to none, if this was played without any nuance it would truly sound robotic and inhuman. yes its an etude but i think alkan must have intended the player to play rubato and interpret their piece to their own idea of its musicality. perhaps that was just another challenge to it, creating your own emotions to express from it. i mean at 3:06 it just sounds so dramatic and expressive, this is the romantic era so i do believe alkan intended for the player to add their own spin on it.
