A brief introduction of Kaise Chiang
Born in 1958, Kaise Chiang comes from Tai-khe, a town in Tho-hng County. In 1982, he got a Master’s degree from the Department of Political Science, National Taiwan University, and subsequently commenced his military service in the ensuing two years. In between, Chiang advocated that the military should be loyal to the state rather than to a specific political party or clique. However, such a statement offended his supervisors. As a consequence, he was punished by carrying excrement and planting vegetables in the rest of his military career. Despite it, he focused on practicing calligraphy, which helped him overcome the hardships he encountered in the army.
As his military service ended in 1984, Kaise Chiang took part in Taiwan’s democratic movement and promoted the spirit of non-violence, which had been introduced by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Due to his political engagement, Chiang was arrested and imprisoned twice, which forced him to leave the political forum temporarily. Nevertheless, he made the best of these “intervals” to study art theories and upgrade his Taiwanese language abilities. After his release from prison, he dedicated himself to calligraphic creations and incorporated traditional Taiwanese songs and proverbs into his artistic practice.
After World War II, under the long-term effect of Chinese hegemony, most Taiwanese calligraphers still followed Chinese artistic criteria. They imitated ancient Chinese poetry and inscriptions, confining their art to the tradition of black ink and white paper. Unlike his Taiwanese predecessors and peers, Chiang seeks new inspirations, new materials and new techniques to re-cultivate Taiwan-based calligraphy. He takes Taiwan’s human right and socio-political activism as motifs, applying them to his artistic creation, and experiments boldly on multi-color ink. Determined to reinvent Taiwan’s cultural subjectivity, Chiang initiates the use of multi-color-ink in calligraphy in the hope of unveiling a new Taiwanese artistic horizon, which simultaneously directs to a new planet of socio-political actualization.
Regarding this documentary:
The documentary records the forty-year trajectory that Taiwanese calligrapher Kaise Chiang has taken and deals with his beliefs that Taiwanese art should address human right issues and Taiwanese languages and apply multi-color to emancipate Taiwanese calligraphy from the dominance of Chinese aesthetics, including ancient Chinese inscriptions and the black-and-white mode.
Kaise Chiang’s calligraphic practice involves three vital elements: human right, his native tongue Tai-gi, and multi-color ink.
1. Human right
Regarding motifs of Taiwanese calligraphy, he opposes the imitation of classical Chinese poetry and inscriptions and insists that calligraphy as a facet of art should correspond to the universal values of freedom, democracy and human right.
2. Tai-gi
Chiang studies his native language Tai-gi and employs Taiwanese songs and proverbs, which closely relate to Taiwan’s history and culture, to create the uniqueness of Taiwanese calligraphy. He challenges the tradition of surrendering to Chinese aesthetics and re-explores his native lingual-culture to express his love toward his homeland Taiwan.
3. Multi-color ink
Chiang embarks on a bold revolution by applying multi-color ink to calligraphy in the hope of re-erecting a new Taiwan-based aesthetics. With strokes like streaks in abstract paintings, the use of color ink and contrasts of colors, he endeavors to transcend the Chinese convention of black and white only.
