Mark… this might sound a bit dramatic…. But I was really into pallet projects as an idea, tried it, and hated it because of the time it took to disassemble and prep the wood. I wrote it off completely and just concluded I would have to dish out an arm and a leg on lumber to just practice and build any skill. I found your channel over the last few weeks… I’ve bought a pallet buster and used it today for the first time. Im giving it another chance. i have to agree with the white-washed finish. sold a hall table with that finish and the lady liked it so much she commissioned me to build matching end tables as well.
Mark, lucky you to have access to pretty and colorful pallets. Here in Germany we just have pine and nothing but pine - in two different colors - dirty/old and new/clean ...
In Texas, we have pallets from Pine to Mahogany! And I use them all! The Oak and poplar are my favorites! I use my Harbor Freight planer first then sand them down to make them pretty. Then I used hide glue to keep them together better. Anna White for plans! I love her stuff! But use the handheld metal detector for those hidden nails do not put them in your planer without it!
Another top drawer video mate! You're absolutely right too, it's only woodworker types that are snobby about it, the people buying your furniture couldn't give a shiny shite what the material is because it looks awesome and does exactly what it needs to. You're smashing it too mate, absolutely out of the park, I'm absolutely stoked for you!

So I found a way to "clean up" pallet wood while still leaving a rough finish. a wire wheel. Especially for pine, it beats all the splinters, dirt and other stuff off. depending on how aggressive you get, it leaves a smooth, but very textured finish with the natural wood grain.
Mate, you are great! Know that! Thanks for your honest share. And you are right, lots of people look for these items nowadays, because they indeed look really cool 🤙🏻
Great video good to see others putting what is considered waste to good uses. To all you would be pallet hunters if you have a ute or big trailer , a fantastic resource is the wooden pallet/frame that ATV 's get imported in.Here in Australia ,my local motorcycle dealer used to pay to dump them at the tip, i just called in one day when i seen them piled up and asked them what they did with them . Great video. Totally agree with the pine pallets. Awesome stuff. I will say though there is nothing worse than a pine pallet which is full of that sappy crapy that will gum up your blades etc.
Yes! I grabbed a couple of pallets a while ago that when I went to clean them up, were absolutely FULL of that crap. A lot of those boards went into the fire pit. It melted and bubbled up like a champ in the fire! Burnt with a nasty black smoke though...
Little tid bit for the peoples. Avoid sanding a surface if you are going to use a bladed edge after. The grit will break off and some of it embeds into the wood. This does make bladed tools blunt much quicker. If it can sand wood it can sand your nice sharp blade.
Top video again Mark. Using the hand plane for a weebit exercise , does make you feel better within yourself ay😅🤣. During the years of making all that you have made from pallet materials , have you cared about grain direction and if it makes any difference when machining pieces?
I've discovered your channel through Jesper makes. I've been interested in pallet woodwork for a while (like years) and I can't believe YT didn't recommend such a quality channel before. In Europe, there are far far less non pine pallets than in the southern hemisphere. I am currently using a stock of palletwood that I scavenged over 10 years ago, coming from Indonesian pallets (used to work on building a solar farm, with solar panels coming directly from Indonesia) to build myself a desk. I kind of disagree with you on pine. It is a bit dull, but the blueing of the wood because of mushrooms *can* make it much more interesting, and it would be a shame to hide it. Also there are all kinds of "pine". It can tend to get closer to pink (douglas pine) red, orange, white, with wider or thinner grain. You don't need to paint it, or hide it. However, as you said in several videos, people need to learn to just not pick uninteresting pallets up, unless they plan to use them for hidden parts. There *are* interesting pine pallets out there, you just need to keep the eyes open and be patient. Cheers and keep up the good work!
