This is one of the best I ever heard....Somehow, MSG sir and Balamurali sir reach their melodious best when they are on the same stage...Its my poorva janma sukrutham that I am able to hear such soulful rendition...I think Indian Government thinks that Dr. Balamurali has travelled far ahead of Bharat Ratna and hence not honouring him....Bharat Ratna will be honoured if it touches this genius...
People have started commenting on best ever Shanmugha Priya ever rendered any musician...One must have authority to comment on some thing ..... This in my view is one of the most melodious and unique concert....please realise this and start enjoying the greatness of this unique vaaggeyakara.....
+Vinayaka Ram V With all due respect, everybody is entitled to his or her opinion & is free to express it without fearing anybody. You may agree. You may disagree. But freedom of expression cannot be curtailed.
BMK still at his best at 66 years!!! MSG and Lalgudi Jayaraman were perhaps the best to ever accompany BMK as they could reproduce every nuance of the vocal gymnastics of BMK. Of course, both MSG and Jayaraman were geniuses in their own right and that's perhaps why they could easily sync with another genius in BMK. BMK, I have always believed has been the only COMPLETE musician we had in the last century and I am yet to see another. A complete musician is said to have four key qualities: shaareera (a great voice - BMK not only had a melodious yet powerful voice but he could also sing fluently in 3 octaves), clarity of expression (bhaava), knowledge (sangeetha gnana) (BMK's knowledge is unquestioned) and lastly creativity.. BMK undoubtedly has been the greatest creator in classical music in the last 100 years... there have been many great musicians during the same period, but each of them one will find short in one of the above four qualities...BMK is the only one who will meet the criteria to be a complete musician!!!
Easwaran R. B. Sir what you said is very true Bala murali have another super quality no one does Swara prastram like him who really toy with swarams and still make lot. meaning at the end Oh one and only Balamurali.
There is another quality required of a musician - the ability to draw crowds. All his concerts were sell-outs. Even in his advanced years, when he was past his prime, we went just to see him.
Balamuraleekrishna ji and MSG Ji together in mesmerising and divine mood. Thanks for this upload. Fantastic feast. Not to to undermine thaniavarthanam.
Great rendering of many pieces. Enjoyed Shanmukhapriya varnam, Saveri, Ananda Bhairavi, and Sindhu Bhairavi! MSG's accompaniment is superlative! Mannargudi Sri Eswaran on the mridangam and Sri V Suresh on the ghatam have provided great support with alacrity and anticipation. Thanks for sharing this concert with all of us!
How blessed are we to hear such a divine music. I thank god everyday for sending such souls to earth. I bow down to these great musicians in gratefulness
BMK Garu as a Puritan offers Chaste Sampradaya Sangitam in yet another recording of greatest merits in all aspects of concert performing art practices. Blessed are we who listened.
Beautiful rendering of the kruti in 'Shanmugapriya' ragam by Sri Balamurali Krishna with Sri M.S. Gopalakrishnan in the violin and Mannargudi Sri Easwaran in mridangam and with Sri V. Suresh, playing ghatam...all made this concert an "A" class performance. We became ecstatically happy. Thanks to all of them. "Mandakolathur Subramanian"
Murali sir's music power is unlimited flowing from god within him and outside. Hi is an extraordinary human being with super natural power[thank you for uploading [ shanmugam/australia
We are fortunate enough to listen this wonderful and divine combination. When a musician is accompanied by apt artists like this.......... no words to explain
With All my respect and great amount of patriotic sense ,I feal Bharathrathna is much ado about nothing ,so far as considered the unique genius of the the prodigy like MSG or legendary BMK
1970s. Ramanavami concert. Bangalore. Someone gave BMK a chit asking him to "sing a rare raga." His response: "Please don't ask me to sing rare ragas. All ragas are rare, all ragas are common. It is all in how you sing it." This varnam is proof of that. As most of his singing is.
for the sake of merely criticizing, you can freely do that...no issues with that.... WE dont have any authority to even discuss this great vaggeyakara leave alone criticizing him
I confess I have an aversion for Shanmukhapriya and never attempted to hum even but after listening to this I feel how great is this rendering by MBK equally followed by MSG and how great is this Raga rich in content for the person who can explore.
He starts with his own composition of a varnam & ends with the Sindhubhairavi 'Raama raama ana Raadhaa Raghupathy", composed by Prayaaga Rangadaasa .. who happens to be Dr.Balamuralikrishna's grandfather. MSG is in his form as usual. Thani is good. Thanks for uploading Sriram Sankaranarayanan.
I was once told, many years ago, that three krishnas - Balamuralikrishna, M S Gopalakrishnan, T V Gopalakrishnan - used to perform one concert together in, I think it was, Nanganallur every year. I had even heard a poor recording of it, on cassette tape. Sri Sriram, are you aware of this? If yes, could you ask around and see if there are any decent recordings that could be uploaded.
I recommend to music lovers on this forum a beautiful rendering of "Bantu reeti koluviyavayya Rama" by Sri Balamurali Krishna. Check here in RUclips. You hear a soulful rendering of Hamsanadam ... including ever so delicately a da3 - shatsruthi dhaivatham, thus distinguishing it from another similar ragam called VarAtA.
Your comment is interesting! It reflects the power of the music that Sri Balamurali Krishna and his accompanying artists have created. I agree that this rendering of Shanmukhapriya is great, rich and authentic.
Listen to the opening phrases in the raga alapana, rgrgrg in gamakas and Ga..Ri.. in jaru. Is this Shanmugapriya ? And then soon afterwards he sings SA RI PA SA . Which lakshana defines Shanmugapriya like this? You and your lakshanas and raga structure.
There is nothing apalakshanam in the gamakams or the jaru. If you need validation, listen to Sri GNB's rendering of Siddhi Vinayakam, as also his RTP in Shanmukhapriya. He has sung the same gamakam and even more aggressive jaru prayogam. Maharajapuram Sri Santhanam has rendered Marivere Dikkevarayya with similar gamakam phrases. They all are perfectly acceptable and grammatical adaptations of Chamaram as Shanmukhapriya was originally called.
What Balamurali sang was not chaste Shanmugapriya, too many gamakas and brikas. That alone is not music. Thanks to Shri MSG, Shanmuagpriya was revived in this concert. Balamurli must know that there are simpler yet melodious ways of rendering a song. In his attempt to show his skills however flawless it may, be he is losing out on the purity.
@NareshGiridharan/@ShivGhiri: 1. You did not invent the Carnatic Music system. It has evolved over hundreds of years through the contribution and interpretation of hundreds of musicians, some of whom were acknowledged by their peers as Sangeeta Kalanidhi and for other honors as great teachers. It is from them, and not you, that all of us learn what is "chaste" and acceptable raga lakshanam. 2. Ego is a great inhibitor to learning. Your unhealthy ego and ignorance are just comical!!
@Naresh Giridharan: Hurling personal attacks has no place in the realms of informed debates and educated circles. You are at liberty to make a complete ass of yourself given the freedom of speech you are fortunate enough to enjoy! But obviously you don't have the qualifications to teach others on what is chaste Shanmukhapriya or who a "puritan" is. Save yourself from further embarrassment! We don't take very well to bullies on this forum.
+Ram Lakshmanan Bully ? You call somebody "bully" for expressing an opinion which you don't like & responding to your comment ? Okay what will you do to the so called "bully" ?
The singer's rendering of Shanmukhapriya varnam is in strict conformity to the raga structure and lakshana as defined and elucidated in the Carnatic music system. Therefore, your comments are baffling, and more reflective of your ignorance than a valid critique of the singer's rendition in this concert.
There can be no more nonsense than what you are saying. A raga's threshold is well defined and under no circumstance is any alapana permitted to bring in a flavour of another raga. It applies to Maharajapuram Santham or GNB or Goddess of Music , Shatshath Sarawasthi Devi. No exceptions. If hearing a flavour of another raga in Shanmugapriya gives bliss to you please carry on. I do not want to dwell further in this matter now that you have defined your standards and lakshanas . Have fun.
Now you give lectures on history of Music and ego. Are you off your nut ? First of all do not speak about something unless you know what it means. Second, stop hiding under jargons such as 'lakshna'.Third, if you like to listen to Shanmugapriya at its best try listening to puritans like Volleti, or Nedhanuri, or Late MDR and Dwaram Venkataswamy Naidu on the violin. Pls stop behaving like a hurt school girl. Take a break Lakshman and listen to Santhanam or GNB with your concept of " lakshanas"
Thank you for this clip. What a great musician. ❤❤❤

What a lovely composition. And such stalwarts together. :) Thanks for uploading. I hope to get round to listening to the others in this series also.
What was being discussed was not the greatness of Balmuralikrishna, but his rendering of Shanmugapriya on that day. Please note the difference.
