- This is Sony Vegas Zen Tips #3 and today I am explaining why the Preview Window lags so much and how to fix it using many different techniques. So why is my Preview Window lagging so much, when I’m trying to edit my project? Well before I answer this, everyone needs to realize that all Video Editing programs suffer from some degree of lag or dropped frames - this is normal.When a video is playing back in the Preview Window, it isn’t simply playing back like a video does on your computer or TV.It is actually being de-compressed in real time, with millions of computations occurring in your CPU and Graphics Card every second.

About a year ago I did all the actions you suggest in this video in order to get better playback in the preview window. None of them worked to a satisfactory level. After much research I discovered the preview window playback codec was different to the one used in Vegas 11 and 12. Some people could play the same clip in Vegas 11 or 12 without lag but it would lag like crazy in Vegas 13.
Happily some genius has separated out the particular file from Vegas 11 that is associated with preview playback and put it on the net. It is then possible to delete the poorly functioning Vegas 13 playback file and replace it with the Vegas 11 file. It works like a dream now. Unbelievably this is not as hard as it sounds.
Thought some people might like to know this.

Honestly though, Premiere Pro doesn't suffer from such lag at all. I scrub the timeline and I get instant real time feedback in the preview window even at UHD and 4K resolutions, no matter what.
I guess is because the Mercury engine is very powerful.
Back to Vegas Pro, yesterday I have fixed the problem (it did the job for me and my PC anyway), and now I have full quality, full res lag free playback and editing.
This is what I have done:
1) Switch GPU acceleration off.
2) Go into Windows Firewall settings, in the section dedicated to the applications allowed to the internet. Once you're there you need to find Vegas Pro and uncheck its box in order for it not to be allowed to the internet. If Vegas is not there, then you need to add it manually and then uncheck its box.
That's it.
After doing this I had a lag free Vegas Pro preview window and timeline.
The 'funny' thing is that my slightly not made-for-video-editing-computer has no trouble at all previewing Full-HD video-files that are at 60 Mbit/sec with even heavy contrast and color correction added to the clip, but it is so laggy with a plain black background with white text (Arial Narrow) on it, that I need to export my footage with text in it just to test the timing, as it just doesn't show up at the right time in Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 14...
As said, my PC is not made for video-editing (it's a Dell Optiplex 990 SFF with an AMD Radeon HD6450 videocard added and the memory completely filled to 16 GB) but I just don't understand why simple text kills smooth preview-playback, but big, heavily adjusted videofiles are no problem at all.

Hope you check these comments still :D. I use vegas pro 12 and I can't get the proxy setting to work. I click it and nothing happens. No loading bar, nothing. Then some of my media goes offline.
The weird part if my video is nice and smooth till around half way, then it lags. My raw video is fine but in vegas half is laggy.
Thank you very much for this! I have a brand new PC, with a 64 bit quad core possessor, and was very frustrated with all the lag. And what`s funny is that my Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 11 works better for me on Windows 10, than my Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 12 haha :)

And that makes sense, I`ll have to look for a PC with a better CPU for school (I`m in my senior year of high school, I`ll be going to collage for film) I don`t have any free video codec packs installed. The only add-ons I do have installed are ones I bought. Magic Bullet quicklooks, and New Blue FX. That could be it. It seems to run fine once I get it open, about as well as you describe V13.

He doesn't even tell you where to find solution 2 or how to use it.
I keep setting my preview window quality to "good" and it keeps switching back to "preview" on it's own. It's never done this before. I had it set to "preview" quality before because of lag and freezing but now I can afford to have it set to "good" preview quality. But it just keeps switching back.
I recommend you perform a full program reset, which will clean the temporary files cache and restore all settings to defaults.

Please don't play music over instructional videos. It is extremely distracting and unnecessary. The narration is drowned out and makes it hard to concentrate on the message.
That was an experiment more than 8 years ago and ended with this very video!!!!!!!

What kind of small camera would you recommend that records 720p/1080p 60fps?
The budget would be in the 300 euro range. As you might know I'm a RUclips Let's Player, recording myself while playing video games and commentating on them. Right now I use the c920 webcam from logitech, which gives me at 360p 20-25 fps. So, since I upload videos of 1080p with a cam in the corner of the video of myself at 360p perhaps 1080p will overdo it. I would love to hit the 60fps benchemark. Still, sometimes I enlarge myself in the video, sometimes even up to 1080p. But that is only for a few seconds, so if the quality of those few seconds is 360p but I would get 60fps I would be cool with it. Then again, above 360p is always nice.

my preview is also lagging and i have an old gtx 460. I thought to get the new gtx 1060 or 1070 what do your think for using it with vegas? It would be nice if you can answer me. Thank you
A GTX460 is a much better choice for Vegas than newer models for now. This is the exact same card I still use and I do not have any problems with it.
Newer Nvidia cards do not work the same as older cards in Vegas. You would be wasting your money to buy this right now. Better to wait and and see what new Vegas Pro 14 is like and whether it upgrades to work with modern Graphics Cards.
i have heard that for Vegas Pro 13 the GTX670 is the latest compatible Graphics Card from NVDIA. Is it right that the benefit of a compatible card is just that i can render faster? Because i have a i7 4790k and im fine with the render time of 4k footage. My problem is just the lagging of the Preview Window.
GTX670 is NOT compatible for accelerated rendering. Only GTX400 and GTX500 series cards work properly in Sony Software. Hopefully this will change when new versions are released soon.

Is there a way to preset the proxy quality when I use the "Create Proxy Video" option in the Project Media panel? Cuz I did it for a 600 Mb 1080p video and its proxy was 400 Mb. That's still a pretty huge file :/
Proxy video quality does not have different settings.
Proxy videos by their nature, cannot be too small, because the use a different format/codec which is "less compressed" - this is what makes the proxy video easier to play. A really small file size, means lots of compression, which is makes the video play slowly and not smooth.
When i put the video into GoPro studio and convert it, so i could edit with it, GoPro studio drops everytime, any tip?
What do you mean by "drops every time" ?
GoPro no longer supports GoPro studio.
Do you have to do all the solutions to prevent lag or do any one?

Il faut aussi comprendre qu'il faut que vous ayez une carte graphique et un processeur capable de rendre la vidéo correctement. Mon ordinateur ne peut rendre la prévisualisation fluide au-delà de 25 ips même avec tous les trucs possibles. Faites le test avec une vidéo sur RUclips, qui a plus de 25 ips.
