  • In this video I talk about filters: specifically, ND and Circular Polarizers. I go over what they do, the pros and cons to both types, and when and how I do and don't use them.

    You have explained it well in many permutation/combinations.
    On a sunny day where there is a cloud, the picture is better with Polarizers. I use it often. Also if mountains are there it cuts down reflection drastically that otherwise makes hazy background(UV filter). It is worth having Polarizers. Yes if photoshop is there, we can redo the LEVELs.

    Great vid. Thanks for sharing. There seems to be a slight, but noticeable softening of the image sharpness when the Polariser & ND was used. For this reason I generally preferred the footage without filters added. That said, definitely worth using in situations where the benefits outweigh this trade off.

      Thanks Arhon! There definitely can be some IQ loss, though it's mostly noticeable from cheaper filters, and when you start stacking multiple filters. I've never had any noticeable loss of quality from the single filters I use, so for me, when I'm in those situations it's totally worth it. Especially when I shoot video.

    Thank you Brent. Roughly 5 years ago, I was shooting with a Canon 60d, with kit glass. I learned A LOT from RUclips video photographers. I taught myself everything, but was/is a novice. I did use a polarized filter and a ND filter to shoot in f/22, for that "silky" water effect. However, it was/is still confusing when is the appropriate time to use. As far as post, I only use Lr, because PS screwed with my head and I could not figure it out for the complex settings. I've been away from my camera for a couple of years now, and I do miss it. In the meantime, I'll use my new Note 8. Thanks again for your videos and education!

      Wow, thanks Grant! One of my first cameras after I finally switched to digital from film was the 60D. Hopefully you'll get back into it with new dslr or mirrorless someday! But like you said, in the mean time you can still do quite a bit and have a lot of fun with the Note 8. Phones just keep getting better an better. Sounds like you probably already saw my video about doing long waterfall exposures with a smartphone too. Anyways, thanks for the comment, and I'm super stoked my videos helped. I've got a lot more coming too, both for regular dslr and smartphone photography, and plenty of post processing stuff too.

      Brent Hall Excellent Brent, I look forward to learning from them! If you Google my name, and click on images, you can see some of my photography. Also through fine art America. And, Kevin O'leary, from Shark Tank, who also is into photography, sent me a tweet commenting on a long exposure shot I took of a waterfall here in Colorado. I also took an AMAZING fast speed shot of a hummingbird in my front yard at a feeder. I've also taken sport shots of kids football games to capture those moments.

      Brent Hall I also made a "ghost" picture of myself, wearing a top, hat around Halloween. It was an 8 sec exposure using a remote.

    It is difficult to mimic if the photo has a lot of glares in the original. It becomes a completely different picture.

    so you dont need a filter if u find a dark waterfall like at dusk? because then the long exposure would let through right amount of light? sorry im new o this!

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  2 года назад

      No, you shouldn't need one for long exposures is it's dark outside.

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  6 лет назад +1

      They are two completely different things, so I don't think I could say which one is better. It just depends on what you need, and they are often used together.

    You can't fake an ND in photoshop/premiere etc. in relation to noise in shadowed/dark areas. I'm sure ND filteres help prevent this when you shoot at a high ISO with a small aperture.

    What mic you use to vlog yr videos?

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  6 лет назад

      The one I used in that video was the rode video mic pro. Depending on what and where I'm filming, I'll either use that, the rode video micro, or a lav mic hooked up to a zoom h1. Now that I think about it, I might have used the lav mic for that video too...

      Hi Brent. Do you use both nd+cpl for video?

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  6 лет назад

      Yes I do, depending on the situation, like if it's really bright out, and if I want a shallow depth of field, and I'm around water or glass or wet rocks or anything like that.

    need better editing, cutting time when you're thinking and messing up words. Also when you compare shots, quit cut between them, you show one, then show you talking for 10 seconds stumbling, then show the other.
