Outstanding video, thanks for taking the time to help the less informed (me)! Question the wire from the top of the fuse holder goes to terminal 8 , where does the wire from the bottom of fuse holder go? Thank you again for the help
The Barrister clamps the voltage at a level that is below the peak inverse breakdown voltage of the diode bridge in the regulator which should theoretically prevent diode Bridge failures in the regulator which of course would lead to other catastrophic issues with the stator coil.
hi i like you videos i just purchased the MEP 802 generator and having problems whit the alternator can't fine the original is there place online need help the original has 3 connections a the auto part show positive and ground but is missing one connection is the goin to be a Be a problem i appreciate you help thanks
They are usually available but as used take off units, unless you want to spend a LOT on brand new. I from time to time part generators out. Keep an eye on my eBay store if interested. There is a link to my eBay on my website, www.callmecolt.com
hi replace the alternator 24 V not the original i have a new problem see if you have any advice the connections exactly like the original wend i flip the knob to dead crank make noise like want to star then when i go to the master switch turn to any position there no noise or contact also replace the fuse FU1 battery are charge is there any other fuses they might blow up in the installation any help is welcome thanks
@ Fantastic ok thank you so much Colt! Love your videos. I just purchased my first MEP-802a and mep-503a. So i am completely new to all this. Any other suggestions sir? Funny enough we have a baby on the way and named him Colt lol
Could be many, many things, including burnt up 24v system if left connected to long. I'd start with a new mechanic. 🙃 If you don't have the Technical Manuals yet, they have some troubleshooting trees in them.
Thanks great vid and good to know. Mine doesn’t have either mod so will be ordering parts today. Which voltage rating for the MOV do you recommend? I see they vary from 135v-200v on eBay for same part #14d151k. Thanks
The voltage on the circuit is around 120v if I remember correctly. Just go with the highest one as it will work with less voltage. The rating will be fine as long as it is higher than it what in the circuit.
I just picked up one of these at auction. It’s missing the fuel pump. It makes me wonder what else I don’t know. I’m not a diesel mechanic. Where do I start?
Hard to say if you don't know what you are looking at to be honest. The Technical Manuals can be downloaded but they are confusing. The best advice I can say is to just look it over & do your best to figure out how it works. If you have any mechanical abilities, it shouldn't be terribly hard to figure out. That's what I did with all my projects. & used lots of internet searches! Auction items can be a real gamble. Never know what is missing or wrong with them.
@@CallMeColtLLC Thanks. That’s the plan I have at the moment. Thought it might be fun to learn this way. Are you also in San Antonio? Can you provide some help sourcing parts?

I love the comments section! I never knew what it did, just that it did something.
@@CallMeColtLLC Google voice mistyped Varistor as Barrister. I'm a semi-blind old fossil who can't see very well. Sorry if that caused any confusion.
@@basspig I knew exactly what you meant. 👍
Thank you for this vid. Just confirmed mine has the fuse mod but not the varistor. 👍👍👍

Thank you for this information
No problem!
Thank you for the info. Nice video
You're welcome
i have a fuse added here that is 20a no varistor. is this existing mod an old update? bought your recommended parts list and going your way instead
If you don't have what is shown in the video, you don't have the proper modification published in the Military Work Order.

Very bad ass man thanks!!!
Glad it was helpful!
I have a 1994 Libby MEP-802a I just purchased. Do you recommend this update on this year and model?
It is needed on ALL MEP 802A & MEP 803A generators.

@mrmillmill good name! Just watch through the videos for suggestions. My eBay store has a lot of kits I've made. Link on the site. www.callmecolt.com
What are you running out of your terminals? Would like to see how your power distribution panels set up on the side there
I ended up changing it a bit, but I have one 30 amp 220v outlet & two 110v outlets. Nothings crazy. I use the 30 amp outlet 95% of the time.
Help! My mech connected the batteries wrong on my Fermont MEP-802A 5kW. Not starting now.

i need to get parts. i just bought it and missing gauges and the voltage regulator
Hope you get yours running 100%!
I guess I am a dumb ass! The fuse is simply in line with the terminal 8 wire, correct?
Yes, in line. You got it!
Where does the other fuse wire go?
The fuse is wired in line with the wire that was existing.
What gauge wire did you use for the jumper? Thx
I did not use any wire for the MOV. The Fuse modification was already done. I think 14ga would be acceptable.
@@CallMeColtLLC Thx
There called threaded inserts lol.
