    Much of the history with most independence movements are like this..
    1. Minority group gets mistreated, so they want independence
    2. Majority group cracks down and treats them even worse for wanting to be independent
    3. Minority group wants independence even more because of that.
    Maybe people wouldn’t want to leave if you didn’t treat them like crap

    • @ghju
      @ghju 6 месяцев назад +38

      Greatly summed up.
      Although I feel like this calls for a 2.5 and a 4.
      2.5. Majority group would have something big, maybe even huge to lose (resources, geostrategic positions, influence, diplomacy ties, you name it) and so don't violently hold on to the minority out of the sheer goodness of their heart; while citizens from the majority almost always cry about how they pay _fortunes_ (FORTUNES, I TELL YOU... even if the minority barely sees any of it usually) for the peasants in the minority without taking into account what the majority is gaining out of it.
      4. The Majority and its citizens will spend an obscene amount of time all year long, for entire lifetimes sometimes, belittling the Minority and anything related to it, mock it, insult it, dehumanize it and wish evil stuff on it sometimes, all while reminding it how it costs them _oh so much_ but will laugh at and ridiculize any mention of independence or greater autonomy because, like every bona fide abusive husband, "you're nothing without me, what will you do anyway, you have nothing, you owe me, blah blah blah" but freaking out big time deep down when the wife talks about leaving.

      @@ghjuTrue. It basically just comes down to bigotry and illogical thinking. Even putting ethics aside, it’s more logical to strive for equality and integration from economic and stability point of view for several reasons.
      1. The majority group tends to exploit whatever natural resource in the area at the detriment of whoever is living there because they just care about profit, but they fixate too much on short term profit. Dealing with the inevitable uprising is going to be a lot costlier and could cut you off from the resource.
      2. Barring an entire region of segment of your population from opportunities will just deprive you of anything those people could contribute to the economy otherwise if they were given the opportunity to grow.

    • @ghju
      @ghju 6 месяцев назад

      @@thedapperdolphin1590 Personally speaking, the bigotry I don't really care about to be perfectly honest.
      Humans -- all of us, to various degrees, no exceptions -- have been idiots for as long as our species has existed so I'm definitely _not_ gonna lose sleep over whatever a stranger thinks of me, my background or how I live, what my values and traditions are etc. Let alone one who seems to have a miserable existence and complains about their own nation 24/7 🙄
      Yeah, I'm a peasant and they're part of the civilization. Congrats? Idc, go on about your own life and let me be. Once shtf I hope they think about us when all they have to eat is their paper and digital numbers lol.
      What I do have a problem with however, is the illogical thinking part. Or better put, the hypocrisy. Because I think illogical thinking is more often than not just playing dumb, a cover for the absolute shame that saying "granted, I hate you, but I don't want you to leave though. We have too many benefits and advantages from exploiting you and/or controlling you to lose" would bring. Rare are those honest enough to own up to having that kind of colonial mindset and they never do it in your face, always online.
      In my specific context it would also be a case of "it would inconvenience me greatly to have to get a passport, obey your own voted laws and spend more for my next door holiday. Don't worry, we'll soon go back to loathing you for the other 10/11 months of the year, but for a short while we'll enjoy everything you have, make your locals' life miserable and still find a way to complain about it, about you and literally everything in existence".
      I mean, when they call your people's and ancestors' home their country's "🍑 tanning spot" during summertime and a "leech" place that needs "some serious beating from law enforcement" the rest of the time because there are graffitis calling for their departure (what can I say, we like street art 🤷🏻‍♀️) or reps so much as dare speaking their own language in their own assembly building, then rejoice when tragedies hit (including deaths) and make the news cycles, you know everything you need to 🤪
      Luckily some still have a brain and some modicum or decency/morals and understand that letting us exist as ourselves would appease many, MANY things, but unfortunately they too, are the minority in their own way.
      Anyway, sorry for the tangent/rant. It's the politician in me lol 😆
      I feel like many of us around the world can somewhat share some of these feelings being on the minority side, regardless of the specificities of each place. Every single one that has an independence desire is clearly not out of nowhere. And as you said, the more the majority reinforces that nuisance and its attitude of disdain and superiority, the more independence desires and movements grow.
      Anyway, have a good day/night wherever you are 🙋🏻‍♀️

    Québécois french speaker from greater Montréal here. It’s absolutely true that support for independence amongst the younger generations is much lower, compared to the older, even though the mouvement never really died. But, as of right now, even if independence seems really unlikely since the movement lost its momentum of the 20th century, it’s an interesting fact that the highest polling party for the next Québec provincial elections is the pro independence party, the Parti québécois. I personally think that most younger citizens are relatively satisfied with the degree of autonomy that Québec has, so they just don’t really see the benefit. But I think it should be noted that it’s because of the older generations that fought for Québec’s greater autonomy from Canada that we today have this level of autonomy that most people are relatively comfortable with, notably with linguistic laws, immigration and judicial system just to name a few.

    Some notes on Catalonia/Basque Country:
    + In Catalonia there were two call outs for a referendum in 2009-2011 and 2014, but the legal body was watered down along the process.
    + Part of the boost the independence movement got in Catalonia was due to the crisis. Cat has always been a left-leaning territory and the capitalist crisis of 2008 (2010 onwards for Spain) shook the arena. Artur Mas saw his right wing govt in danger both due to demonstrations and corruption investigations, so, he pushed for independence as an escape strategy.
    + The autonomy setups in Spain are not exclusive to BC/Cat, every region has one. This was done in an attempt to avoid those regions from feeling special and claiming further rights in the future.
    + The only region with a historical legal right that rules over other spanish's laws is Nafarroa/Navarra. For instance, they collect their own taxes. This partially explains why Euskadi/Pais Vasco also has the capacity to collect their own taxes. Yes, the naming is confusing. Basque Country / Euskal Herria = Navarra/Nafarroa + Euskadi/Pais vasco + Iparralde.
    + Elections were just held in Euskadi a few days ago and pro-independence parties got majority, but both did without explicit calls to referendums in a near future.
    (Not a critique, both parts of the videos are neatly documented, but there are some small nuances that are hard to know and put in context from outside).

      By the way.. what (or who) dictates who has or not rights on anything? Catalonia had its OWN PARLIAMENT and institutions, which of course were banned by the spanish government more than once throughout history.
      And the reason why there was that new uprisal of separatist movement in Catalonia was because of the nasty behaviour against Catalonia by the right-winged Popular Party, in power at that time, which again and again did everything to undermine Catalan institutions, culture and economics. One of the main problems being the clear intention by the Madrid government to suppress the Catalan language from schools in Catalonia, and even changing the official name of it in the Catalan-speaking area of Aragon from the original and accepted name "Català de La Franja" (Aragon's' Strip Catalan) to "Lengua Aragonesa Propia del Área Oriental" (LAPAO), which is simply a ridiculous attempt to terminate the Catalan language in that region by simply changing its name in official records. Sooo democratic!.

      It's good that you mention the recent Basque regional elections. The most voted parties were two Basque nationalist parties (EAJ/PNV with a right-wing approach and Bildu with a left-wing approach), but neither of them claim any specific intentions for independence at this point. What's more, both are engaged in supporting mainstream Spanish parties in the national parliament in exchange for greater autonomy for the region, and the Basque voters supported the continuation of this strategy when they overwhelmingly voted for them last week.
      So it's safe to say that although many Basques would desire independence in a hypothetical future, the majority of them agree with the current soft approach of negotiating greater autonomy within Spain for now.
      This is not the case in Catalonia, where nationalist parties clearly state that they aim for 100% independence asap.
      You could say that Basques are taking a more realistic approach while Catalans remain more idealistic about their independence

Many people now hang Belgian flags out on the Flemish holiday and most politicians still say the oath of parliament in both Dutch and French as a symbol of unity. So while a select group of Flemish people still scream and shout about an independent Flanders, the general consensus in Belgium is that splitting the country is a stupid idea that tramples on our identity and history. Nevertheless, there will continue to be a section of the population and parliament complaining about Belgium as one country but even they have temporarily abandoned the independence idea because so many people find it offensive.

    Due to its massive size, Greenland would need a population of about 300,000 to truly manage its own affairs. The Inuit population of roughly 48,000 simply cannot produce enough engineers, doctors, architects, diplomats, scientists, airline pilots, economists, etc to govern such a large country. Independence would essentially be in name only because the majority of professionals would continue to be non-native Greenlanders.

    • @CKDrechsel
      @CKDrechsel 2 месяца назад +2

      I partly agree with you here. The main obstacles, and these aren't simply resolved of course, are having a stable and somewhat self-sufficient government, and military capability, which is entirely Danish military. However, although I do agree that the population number has something to say in terms of education and so on (which is very sector specific as well), gaining independent status is not only about becoming completely unreliant. Look at island states such as Tuvalu and Palau. They have a lot less inhabitants, and although a lot less land, they have gained independence. Greenland has a lot of potential in quite a few industries, but in many cases, it is reliant on international interest, which in itself also poses some challenges. It needs to build industries as it atm relies heavily on fishing (the fishing industry contributes around 90% to the national economy). But other industries are slowly growing, and if they manage to grow sustainably, it could accelerate the independence proces.
      Independence, therefore, could be gained and most likely it will in the future. But the debates right now is, as touched upon in the video, whether it is economically viable at the contemporary state of Greenland. As of right now it is unlikely, but it remains a very realistic possibility as the Self-Rule referendum in 2008 has the mentioned term, that Greenland is allowed to commence an independence proces whenever it sees fit, and when the parties agree. And as of right now, there are debates on starting to write a national constitution, which means that Greenland could in the next few decades gain independency.

    French perspective on the new caledonia thing.
    First thing first, i'm genuinely interested in the subject so i know quite a lot about this topic, not just talking from my butt.
    The main thing to consider in the independence referendums is that the voting lists have been mostly frozen so as to not disadvantage too much the kanak side. i don't remember the exact rule but i think you need to have been living there for 5-10 years in new caledonia prior to the 1988 agreemenent to be on the voting list, that means that a 35 yo who has been living there his entire life would still not have a say in the vote for independence, which would be obvious BS. that is the only thing allowing the kanak side to pretend they actually have a chance.
    now times have changed and the wounds of the 1988 incidents are far behind, especially for young people. The pandemic had an effect on the vote too, but not the one the kanak side advertized. France made a LOT of efforts to get the population vaccinated, which would logically make at least a few independentists rethink a little bit (we all know that small independant island nations would not had it as good) AND recently there has been tensions with china in the region which made it clear that independence would have meant vassalization by china just like what is happening in the solomon islands (french news are very outward looking).
    so when they say that "oh no, the vote falls during our customary grieving whatever" i cannot help to call BS. Support for independance was already iffy, and the recent events did not play in their favor, I think the vote was doomed, and i think they knew it. But as per their agreement and as per UN decolonization rule, this third independence referendum was meant to be the last, and should they lose fair and square, they knew they would be stuck with it for a very long time, possibly forever if the youth doesn't end up caring as much. So they reached the conclusion that their only chance to win was to not play, and called for a boycott.
    Now where does that leave us ? the agreements freezing the voting lists have expired, and the french government if working toward enlarging it to most people who have a legitimate claim to participate in local affairs (likely anyone who have been living there for at least 5 years) which will lead to the kanak population being dwarfed in numbers by the non-kanak, and i don't see how they get away from it because democracy when 2/3 of the other side can't vote is not exactly democracy.
    Most likely the only path left to them is violence, or rather incite violence and hope that france does something as incredibly stupid as we did in 1988, but we have learned a thing or two since them. but even assuming that, i don't see it going well, what was made very clear during the peace agreement was that the kanak and local french people would build a future together and without violence, renegging on that would look very bad, so i think the carrots are cooked as we say.

    Denmark didn't "acquire Greenland from Norway". Denmark-Norway was 1 unified kingdom, with Denmark at the helm. In-practice it was basically just the Danish realm we know today, with Norway being a part of it like Greenland and the Faroe Islands are today.
    With Norway as an internal subdivision in this Kingdom, it was technically through it Denmark-Norway laid claim to Greenland and the Faroe Islands. When after the Napoleonic wars Norway was given to Sweden instead, the great powers decided that would not include Greenland and the Faroe Islands, which would stay with the Kingdom of Denmark.
    So you can make some technically correct argument for your statement being true. But in practice what happened was simply that they stayed with Denmark when Norway left the union, despite Norway claiming the territories.

Capturing more of the arctic would allow them to position nuclear subs and silos closer to the U.S. mainland and within targeting range of Northern Europe. It would also embolden them to lay claim over more arctic oil reserves.
    There would be a mad rush to bring a sovereign Greenland into NATO, but I’m not sure they’d be able to establish a civilian military and meet GDP requirements quickly enough.
