I am in awe with tears. I'm so happy that I got a chance to see this doc and finally learn about who that beautiful voice was on the radio since I was a child of the 1960s and never knowing who she was. So Now my heart is heavy, because I never really knew what I was missing. This was profound. She was delicate soul and a gift to the world.
Shortly before she died I was lucky to see her live in Toronto. I remember knowing every song and all the lyrics and being in a blissful state. What a compelling voice.
My greatest gift in life, when it comes to music, was hearing Shirley live at the Bohemian Caverns in Washington DC. We got an extra when her drummer fell ill, and she had to wait for a union replacement. She made herself available to the small crowd (Caverns is so small) and she signed autographs and I still have mine on the WP review I had in hand. She was a gift from God.
God this was the best Documentary that touched my heart., besides being my neighbor in Washington DC and I never knew it until my Mother told me...Im proud to have been in the same room with the greatest people.

Shirley's up in Heaven with ALLL OF THE GREATS MAKING THE BEST MUSIC for the ANGELS !!!
Awesome memory!! I went to hear her at the Cinegrill at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood. I sat at the bar, had a cup of coffee and noticed a woman sitting across on a stool with her drink. I remember thinking how great -- she's probably on her way home from work and stopped in to hear some music. Then the same woman got off the stool and walked over to the piano and started to play. It was Shirley Horn.
It is sometimes said that Johnny's string writing is so obvious. The thing is, he takes much time working towards a musical climax - slowly - gracefully - carefully - and then it is just SO NICE when he gets there!
Yes, as I understand it there was a dispute between Shirley's estate, copyright holders and her label and so this has never been relreleased. I was hoping that @QwestTV or similar would pick it up and produce a new HD version. But here we are. I'm happy that it's picking up so many views.
I was fortunate enough to hear Ms Horn at Jazz Alley in Seattle one night. I was a HUGE fan and very excited to be there. At the start of the concert there was a quiet pause. I shouted "Yay Shirley." In my excitement, it just came out of my mouth. She just blinked her eyes. I was terribly embarrassed and always intended to write her an apology, but then she died. So, now, this is my public apology.
I saw her at the same spot in 1999. I went two nights. She had a hard time climbing the stage. It took a few minutes. I later learned that her diabetic foot was amputated some time thereafter. I'm a native Washingtonian as well as she was, so I was well familiar with her legend locally. I have to say, I have everything she's ever recorded and she is my all-time #1 artist. A true original.
I grew up in the city and listened to Sarah V and Betty Carter in the Village and over many years I’ve been privileged to listen to all these ladies and Shirley Horn was a relatively late inspiration to me and I’m so pleased now that she is among that small cadre of those beautiful geniuses. Thank you
A woman at WRPI in Troy NY played this song one day while I was in the car. Later I learned that Miles Davis had a lot to do with her career. She has a tempo named after her.
I searched for years for the multi channel version of this sublime recording. I found it and the long search was worth it. If you have the capability, I can't recommend this version enough!
I don't remember now HOW i found this song , probably some sports video or musician video, but it gives me chills when i listen to it. . . UPDATE : I now know how i found out about her , i rent a room from an older gentleman and he plays a ton of CANNONBALL ADERLY, and he played Here's To Life ,and THAT'S how ... i got hooked.
Shirley sings as she speaks - gentle, slow, full of pauses and reflections; and what's not said is just as important as what is. When she sings It's like she's singing just to you. Both Shirley and Carmen knew the importance of a lyric, but their voices were very different - Carmen is bold and brassy like a saxophone, Shirley is cool like an alto flute.

So happy you enjoyed it! I'm hoping to talk to Artie Butler who wrote the music for "Heres to life" sometime in the next month or so.

You're so lucky. I know her Beauty. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Just Beautiful ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
One of the most underrated jazz artists of our time. She cast a spell over the crowd when she performed.
I loved her from the moment I discovered her on RUclips. Loved her completely.

Thanks for the comments. I never had the chance to see Shirlie live, I'm envious.

@@ctproduced such an important document, thank you again
I also had this on video along with my large opera collection. Sadly most of these were not translated to DVD so I am so glad to see it again.

58.25 - The influence Nat king Cole had on Shirley is so apparent.
I don't quite get it. Carmen MacRae, to me, was a much better singer.
The good news is no one is making you choose. Music is always subjective, as long as it's got a groove...
You don’t need to ‘get it’. Carmen understood. 9:05
