I give the Aussie judge a slight pass, partly because it's the Aussie way, but he also sums up quite well Kurt's appeal - not conventionally attractive but very appealing and real. Simon was just a dick and you can see how that comment stung.

Well people who go to these contests have some expectation for their music career, and it is the judges's responsibility to tell them how good they are but also the obstacles that they may face. That being said, it is a sad truth the while we still have music from great bands from the past lingering, today's pop idols are more than just their voices, they need to appeal to the eyes also.

I remember watching this 20 years ago, but seeing this clip now it's still so weird to think about what was considered OK to say on TV back in the day. And no, calling someone ugly like that wasn't the norm, but this exact same conversation would've never happened today or it would've at the very least had serious consequences. It's terrible how so much is supposed to depend on people's looks. This is what relates to "the average people". We like him because he seems so normal and down to earth. He was just a regular plumber who was signed up for this by his friends and then he went and won the entire thing. He really is an idol.

The comments about his looks where a little harsh but they do have a point. If you want to make it as a pop idol you need the looks. I don't find Kurt ugly but he is not "hot". To be bluntly honest, music isn't about sound anymore. It's about multi-media. It's the hard cold fact that comes in the day and age we live in. Despite this the world can appreciate a fine voice. Kelly Clarkson, Susan Boyle, Paul Potts, and Kurt Nilsen are testament to this. All four of these artists aren't the most beautiful of singers, but damn they can sing. As a human race, we should all be proud they are all appreciated.
I watched that show too and I understood it as it was after the results show that happened and that it was just the whole effect of realising he had won and what that could mean to his life. When anyone's emotions would be on a roller coaster ride. Not because of what the judges said to him. His manager had advised him before hand to just not reply if others started talking about his looks and just to concentrate on the fact that he has an amazing voice.

i watched an interview with Kurt the other day and they brought up the "Hobbit" comments and he said that it doesnt matter how people view him, its the music that counts.....he is sooo true! music today is alot of yelling and cursing and sex but with his music it is just as the older generation thinks of it...if there are no words there is no music....he has brought that back to me and i have yet to find anyone comparable...

It was harsh and it was true! I really appreciate his honesty on that matter - people who participate in those shows have a dream, and they need to be ready for that dream. I think Simon said what needed to be said, regardless of how hurtful it may have been for the artist. @tigeramigos yes, to the extent that he is one of the major selling and respected artists here in Norway. Which for some may not be enough, for him it is! Has completed sold-out tours each and every year since 2003, recorded and released 4 solo albums(1 with a duet with Willie Nelson), 2 live albums with 3 others and produced/co-produced material for at least 3 other bands to my knowledge. Written 95% of his own material. Just started an acoustic tour here, which has received very good critic.
Kurt has been asked and agreed to be a judge in Norwegian Idol this year (10 years after he won) even though he is doing a 58 concert tour during auditions and the final rounds before Idol appears on the TV.

Strange how journalists always focus on the artists' appearance when it stands out, one way or another. In my opinion Kurt has a charisma that overshadows that he looks completely normal. Another Norwegian vocalist, Morten Harket from A-ha, continuously over the years heard what a fantastic look he had, and to such an extent that it took the focus away from the music, which obviously became embarrassing for Morten in many interviews. I experience both Kurt and Morten as honest, polite and humble people. They both have a wonderful voice, and when I listen to the music, it's the voice that captivates me, not the look of the artist. I understand that Mortens appearance was a good one for A-ha when they broke through decades ago, but the music they have delivered over the years is impeccable.

For me, Kurt is the best artist in the world. He's sweet, honest and has the most incredible voice I've ever heard, and those qualities should be the most important ones for an artist. I'm proud to be norwegian.

I remember watching this 20 years ago, but seeing this clip now it's still so weird to think about what was considered OK to say on TV back in the day.
And no, calling someone ugly like that wasn't the norm, but this exact same conversation would've never happened today or it would've at the very least had serious consequences.

It is shocking to me that anyone could call Kurt Ugly. He is NOT Ugly. He might not be a super Model but how many men are? My goodness the vanity of some folks. Hands down this mans voice beats most other male vocalists, maybe all. I think he not only has an amazing voice but is cute as well.

He is not ugly!!! He is brilliant and charming and has an amazing voice. The only flaw is the teeth, but that's just kinda cute once you've seen him before. It's terrible how so much is supposed to depend on people's looks. This is what relates to "the average people". We like him because he seems so normal and down to earth. He was just a regular plumber who was signed up for this by his friends and then he went and won the entire thing. He really is an idol.

Andreas, with a voice like that I have to ask, why was he the underdog? Yes, Kelly and Will had beautiful voices, but Kurt had a voice that cannot be compared to anyone, even them. He deserved the World title, and as far as I'm concerned he is so cute and his voice is unmeasured by anyone else in the world! Kurt is MY IDOL!
This is fun to watch now. Just look how far Kurt have come in 10 years, and how big he is in Norway. And how on earth could they tell him he was ugly? It wasn't a beauty-contest, it was a singing contest and Kurt was by far the most talented of them all. But who cares now, he won!

There you have the difference between Norwegians and many others. Kurt has probably cursed himself that he should not do anything with his teeth just to show that he is good enough as he is, and we love him for that.
I'm a guy (and straight) and I don't think he's ugly at all. You should never judge the book by its cover, and telling someone (or hinting like Simon Cowell did) that someone is ugly directly to their face is really fucking evil. Stuff like that can scar a person for life.

There are not many authentic, unpainted up artists in the world today as Kurt. Incidentally, you superficial people, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. His stunning beautiful voice should put to rest the absurdities of the judges. Might I say, sadly, it was the original 3 Norwegian Idol judges who spawned off that what gave way to such negativity. They ought to have elevated Kurt from the getgo, not just reluctantly given him a chance at the next round. Well it's Kurt who has had the last laugh people... and that's all that matters today. To be bluntly honest, music isn't about sound anymore. It's about multi-media. It's the hard cold fact that comes in the day and age we live in. Despite this the world can appreciate a fine voice. Kelly Clarkson, Susan Boyle, Paul Potts, and Kurt Nilsen are testament to this. All four of these artists aren't the most beautiful of singers, but damn they can sing. As a human race, we should all be proud they are all appreciated.
Watch his eyes at Simon as he says "Thank You". Simon give him the win right there. Kurt is very smart to. ;-)
I watched that show too and I understood it as it was after the results show that happened and that it was just the whole effect of realising he had won and what that could mean to his life. When anyone's emotions would be on a roller coaster ride. Not because of what the judges said to him. His manager had advised him before hand to just not reply if others started talking about his looks and just to concentrate on the fact that he has an amazing voice.
How can you say without shame that he’s ugly? Come on, “ugly”, do you realise how strong this word is? He’s not ugly! They kept on reminding him of his physical appearance, thanks I think he got it, maybe consider that he’s human and that you can have certainly a normal conversation and comments with him
i watched an interview with Kurt the other day and they brought up the "Hobbit" comments and he said that it doesnt matter how people view him, its the music that counts.....he is sooo true! music today is alot of yelling and cursing and sex but with his music it is just as the older generation thinks of it...if there are no words there is no music....he has brought that back to me and i have yet to find anyone comparable...
@bicnarok Actually, he'd already heard all this during his time in Norwegian Idol! 2 of the judges didn't want to see him go through from the audition stages as they said he wouldn't make it as a pop artist/was more of a band member! Kurt has never bowed to pressure to change his appearance, or the way he acts.

I really appreciate his honesty on that matter - people who participate in those shows have a dream, and they need to be ready for that dream. I think Simon said what needed to be said, regardless of how hurtful it may have been for the artist.

yes, to the extent that he is one of the major selling and respected artists here in Norway. Which for some may not be enough, for him it is! Has completed sold-out tours each and every year since 2003, recorded and released 4 solo albums(1 with a duet with Willie Nelson), 2 live albums with 3 others and produced/co-produced material for at least 3 other bands to my knowledge. Written 95% of his own material. Just started an acoustic tour here, which has received very good critic.
Such stupid comments about his looks. I remember being shocked by their insensitivity and so happy that he beat the odds and won!
Kurt has been asked and agreed to be a judge in Norwegian Idol this year (10 years after he won) even though he is doing a 58 concert tour during auditions and the final rounds before Idol appears on the TV.
Of course they're gonna say he's ugly...what else have they got on this guy? His voice is amazing...so what if he doesn't look like a super model, he is amazing! I take talent over looks any day!

Strange how journalists always focus on the artists' appearance when it stands out, one way or another. In my opinion Kurt has a charisma that overshadows that he looks completely normal. Another Norwegian vocalist, Morten Harket from A-ha, continuously over the years heard what a fantastic look he had, and to such an extent that it took the focus away from the music, which obviously became embarrassing for Morten in many interviews. I experience both Kurt and Morten as honest, polite and humble people. They both have a wonderful voice, and when I listen to the music, it's the voice that captivates me, not the look of the artist. I understand that Mortens appearance was a good one for A-ha when they broke through decades ago, but the music they have delivered over the years is impeccable.
people shouldn't be judged on how good looking they are, that is not the point. Kurt is an unbelievable singer and by far deserved to win world idol because he has the greatest voice i have ever heard.

@Norenaz Yes the frst one does. He is actually the Norwegian Simon Cowell and has judged in all our popular singing/talent shows. Not every year of course, but you know Idol, X-factor and Norway's got talent and he knows what he's talking about, he knows talent and he IS Kurt's manager :D
I think kurt is very beautiful and his talent and music transformed him into a cult object of apparently timeless fascination.....
