Carl Brashear is an epitome to never give up. if you ever feel like giving up, just remember Carl Brashear did 12 STEPS on a polished slippery floor wearing a full navy diver gear on 1 prosthetic leg that wasn't even built to handle the load he was carrying.
This man may be the single reason I joined the army at all. I may have not been navy but he is still my brother. My mentor. Someone who I truly wish to be one day. HE IS A HERO!
I don't know him but he inspired me not to give up on my Diving dream. I am a trainee and tomorrow my instructor will be showing the movie MEN OF HONOR. We are proud of you sir. Take a bow 🙇
This should’ve been the end of Carl’s diving career, in fact it was just the beginning of him becoming a Navy Master Diver! A true hero to many. Thank You Master Chief!
I wish the younger generation would use Carl and other real men as a hero/role model rather than sports/movie stars and other low class individuals. It's hard today to find a single good man. God bless you Carl and thank you for the example. From a grunt to a squid.
I had the privileged of meeting Chief Brasher while giving a speech @ Little Creek, NAS, Norfolk to a class of navy sailors and Marines. He was in a wheelchair at that point. Accompanied with his wife & talking to mostly sailors and Marines of color in the late 70a/ 80s (it may have been longer), I seem to remember. I was a seasoned Marine and a salvage diver trained by the Navy. Someone asked Chief about the scene when he was under water rebuilding the piping when it was said he was under water for 9 hours. He responded, 'the movie got it wrong, I was under water longer". You can hear a pin drop. Men like him don't exist anymore
I had no idea it was 6 hours that he had to wait...I had no idea that it was 6 years until he got into the diving school. The movie definitely left out these details... That's why I came here to look for more info.
I never had the opportunity to meet him personally, but many of his relatives, including a few of his siblings, were customers of mine in my job in the area around Sonora and Hodgenville, KY.
In 1915 John Henry Turpin worked as a diver in efforts to raise the sunken submarine USS F-4 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He became qualified as a "Master Diver" - most probably the first African-American sailor to do so. (It is often erroneously reported that Master Chief Petty Officer Carl Brashear held this honor.)
A lot about that movie strayed from the truth. Chief Sunday wasn't even a real person and a Soviet submarine did not sail across Carl's air hose when he was diving. Still, they had to make a movie and have drama, so they did the best they could.
He had only 1 friend who was Brazilian, the only person of the army that talked to him besides orders from superiors, also this Brazilian had a carreer along with him too and it wasnt in the movie
Thanks for posting this memorable vid of a great man of valor , Carl Brashear , , the movie , Men of Honor , is truly inspirational for those who want to achieve & willing to strive for the reward , , ,
Thank you for this. I went to grade school and befriended Gooding, Jr. Also, in 1993 I enlisted in the Navy as a Boatswainsmate. The movie brought tears to my eyes
In a era where the word "negro" was still a normal word, where the blacks were still fighting for their rights, where they were not allowed to drink from public places, where many places banned them from entering etc and etc......with all these things against him, He stood strong, He overcame them despite the odds, I can just imagine that sheer will in him to overcome all these things to climb the ladder and finally become the Master Diver with so many other achievements. This guy is the Hero. I SALUTE TO YOU SIR! SO MUCH RESPECT FOR YOU!
It's 2022 and I just discovered the movie about him from 2000... This video is great to find because it shares the real person the movie was about. I wonder how much of the movie characters is real. I have only seen two of the movie trailers I think. I hope to watch the movie over the weekend.
The take away of Master Chief Petty Officer Carl Brashear's story is he was never a victim nor succumbed to the victim mentality... he was the Hero of his own story.
Also how unfairly obstacles were ALWAYS in his way. Obstacles folks of other color don’t have…not everyone can have his will and determination, to fight those obstacles.
You know, and i bet this may not sit well with some people, but THIS story (out of so many i hear these days about African American issues) is one that makes sense and i could get behind. This man, everything he accomplished, he EARNED. No free rides, no screaming "racism" as a lame ass excuse to get a free pass....he worked for it and he EARNED it. I would get behind this man and have his back ANY day if he needed it. If every man of color did this there would be far less problems in this world for african americans. Endure and achieve. Take the weight and overcome. This is a man i can RESPECT for his actions and accomplishments in an age FAR worse than what a modern day man of color faces. I would have loved to meet this man just once.
I’m just proud to be the grandson of a man who grew up in a time when their fathers and grandfathers where considered boys no matter how old they were, yet they persisted for dignity
290 lb HELIUM GEAR...Dats sum heavy SHYT!!!Carl should be an ASPIRATIONS FOR ALL PEOPLE, ALL ETHNICS NOT JUST AFRIKKANS...His determination and intestinal fortitude it’s admirable. MI SALUTE HIM! Rispek 💯🇯🇲🇧🇷
I've seen the movie several times and I'm surprised theirs not much information on RUclips b4 the movie men of honor which is pretty shitty considering this guy was the first African American diver but also achieved that status missing a leg!! God bless the fighting spirit of men like this 🙏 The proud and first of many.
One of my favorite movies. Never give up regardless of the adversity. Carl Brashear is a hero of mine and I'm Chinese.
What does being Chinese have to do with appreciating this man?
How d fuck are u watching you tube?
@@michaeldonahue4600 to show that everyone of all colors appreciate this man for what he did and went through.
Movie was not mt favourite but now it is, after experiences and self discovery

When ever you think your life is crap, watch this
What an amazing man.
Glad a movie was made to celebrate his struggles and dreams
"It's not a sin to get knocked down, it's a sin to STAY down" ✝️
Carl Brashear is an American Hero. Long Live his Daddy's words, ASNF.
This man is truly an inspiration to us all 🇺🇸
Amen to that 🇺🇸🇬🇧

What a great tribute to a great American and Navy man. He overcame amazing obstacles to become a Chief Master Diver in the US Navy.
Carl yes....the rest showes how wack the navy was!!!

Growing up as a child, this movie was and still is one of my favorites and it allowed me to learn perseverance and determination.

They just build men different back then. Respect.
Best true life story i have ever heard. What a great man. Never quit.
This man defines honor and valor. It makes me proud to have served in his Navy. Bravo Zulu Sir!
Thank you for you honor and service 🇺🇲
A winner never quits, and a quitter never wins.
I met Master Chief Brashear in the 90s when I was in the Army. Very nice man.
This man is inspiring anyone. Carl and Tuskegee airman never given the chance back then only to be the best in their respective fields.
I had no idea it was 6 hours that he had to wait...I had no idea that it was 6 years until he got into the diving school. The movie definitely left out these details... That's why I came here to look for more info.
That's a strong mind and will.No pain no gain at its best.
His story gives me goosebumps. What a legend. A great man.
A true inspiration and a hero to all who is trying to overcome insurmountable odds.
this is a story which we need, to pick overselves up when we are emotionally down
Thank you for being an inspiration and opening the door for us to walk through. Thank you for your service legend 🙏🏾 #Respect

Carl Brasher is a true American hero and deserves all USA citizens respect.
This should be required reading material for school now. To show you can do anything as long as you never give up
I often look around me and see a generation of weakness. What would this man think of me? I am humbled.
Wow what a story simply blessed from god
