Gilbert, Your videos are such an awesome time machine for me. It's weird how much I have in common with you. I graduated high school in 1989 as well. I grew up in L.A. but my father lived in West Covina so when I visited him I would go to Puente Hills Mall. I moved to Fontana in 2002. I too suffer from depression and anxiety for years which makes me kinda of a homebody. Anyway, I'm very nostalgic for the 80s and when I was young and just the memories so I love your videos.
Ms Gazelle, I agree, these are great videos. Gilbert did an awesome job. His videos kinda trip me out too in a strange way. As Forrest GUMP would say, " Life is a risk, Carnala." So, please don't trip. Just breathe, believe and receive. Then do it again....and again...and again....One giant breath at a time !!!
Hi Gazelle! I grew up in Downey, graduated from Santa Fe High, and I also went to Puente Hills Mall once in a while. I've been in the same boat and that's why I started the radio show. Maybe we can listen in and we can throw a shoutout your way! Let's reminisce as a bunch of 80s fans that we are.
@ What a trip. I worked there at Mcdonald's in 1985. It was my first part time job while I lived in Walnut. Damn, it was a long walk from the Puente Hills Mall to Valley Blvd to catch the RTD 484 west to Holt /Pomona. I short time later I bought my first car, an AMC Hornet for 300 bucks !!!
Back when food courts didn’t exist but instead individual food restaurants inside the mall. Growing up my family would go to the Puente Hills mall most weekends with my grandmother. She loved to shop. The Sanrio Surprise store was my favorite. I loved fishing for the grab bags filled with surprises. 😊 and that McDonalds as a kid was everything. Even the slanted walkway. Thank you for sharing a big piece of my childhood.
Holy crap. I remember it all! Those ceiling light bulbs, the planters, that Mcdonalds, the plants with lights, string lights from the ceiling. Not shown in the video but I also remember the carousel that they used to have. Many fond memories at this mall from the 90's and 2000's.
Thank you so much for putting this video up! Such a sweet trip down memory lane 🥲 I used to work in this mall and loved seeing all kf the shops that I have long forgotten about. ISam Goody and Waldenbooks were around when you took the video! This place will forever be remembered as the Back to the Future Mall for me 🥹
This is crazy! I used to live in West Covina as a kid in the late 90s early 2000s and went this mall all the time with my family. Crazy to see old footage of it before my time!
Wow Gilbert. You are THE MAN for posting this! This is special. A straight up trip back in time to my childhood at my favorite mall in the 80s. So many memories! Thank you!
I was there in Dec 1989 so many memories I met the love of my life there in 2002 best 4 years of my life ❤ she was killed in a car accident in 2007 my life was utterly shattered has to leave La Puente and California it was too painful ! Thank you so much for uploading this!! Cheers from Salt Lake city
Exactly! Not to mention that my local mall used to have all these intresting little stores that weren't really chain stores but more like a family operated mom and pop place..well those all got shut down and turned into over expesenive stores like Coach,Michael Korrs,MAC etc..my mall looked just like the one in the video back in the 80s and 90s. Now it's been remodeled and is very bland and has a cold feel to it. Also used to have an arcade and kids & teens would hang out every weekend. Now that's gone and I never see anyone hanging out. .it's mostly just soccer moms. The only store left from my childhood is Spencer's Gifts.
Wow! Thank YOU for the time machine. I grew up in this area during the 80's. Nice to see footage of Broadway, Kay-Bee toys, Sees, the clock, etc.. Please share more... I'm dying to see Showboat, Malibu Grand Prix, Best Products, Skate Junction , PJ Pizzaz, etc.. if you have them.
Today only a small suit store (the red neon sign captured in the pillar reflection at 4:24) and that See's Candies are what remain from what's shown in this video. Crazy. I grew up going to this mall and still remember the wooden benches in the center court in the 90s.
Gilbert your videos are amazing...my opinion... your one of the first vloggers...thank you for sharing your home videos..i enjoy watching all of them..stay safe buddy
WOW GREAT VIDEO. Born and raised in Rowland, I remember all the store in your video. I MISS that clock in the center. That mall sucks now!!. Rainbow Gate... MAN.. that is way back.. I was thinking sanrio at first. I wish you shot some video outside the mall like the Firestone shop, Movie Theater, PJ Pazzaz. LOL
I see that's the mall where the movie Back to the Future was filmed. I also know that this mall used to have a JCPenney store along with a J.W. Robinson's and The Broadway. Today J.W. Robinson's is now Macy's, which first became Robinsons-May in 1993 before Macy's in 2006. The former Broadway store is now an AMC theaters. JCPenney is now Burlington Coat Factory on the lower level, Toys R Us and Round1 on the upper level, and also a 24 Hour Fitness gym on one side. The only original anchor that survived is Sears.
Great Video bro it's a trip to see how times change me and my family used to go to Puente hills mall a lot we just moved to Corona from Whittier CA. I would live to see video of the Montebello mall in the 80's or 90's I grew up going to that mall thanks again!
1 of 2 of My childhood malls. Never been back since i moved to Texas in 1995. The memories of how my brother and i remember this place, thank you. Now if only i can find a video of Malibu showboat and grand prex.
Do you remember if the name of that store your little sister and friend were browsing in was called Sassy? it looks exactly like a store my mall had in the 80s and 90s. Lots of Sanrio and Hello kitty pencils, toys, stationary stuff balloons and candy. I even noticed the cashier wearing Hello kitty. Makes me think it's the same store we had in NY.
Man I used to go to that McDonalds as a kid. The only place I ever got a McDLT lol! Cool to see the Christmas decorations. I had my picture taken with Santa there one year. Nice to see a shot of the old Kay Bee Toy Store. Wish you had gotten a shot of Time Out arcade too. Great video!
I have to compliment you on your camera work. You have a steady hand, your framing is spot-on, and you have a good eye for subject matter. Plus, you are persistent carrying that camera. bravo!

Back in the day when people actually went to malls. I miss shopping in malls in the 80's and 90's. Now all the malls are "dead malls" and everyone shops online now a days.

I remember that mc Donald’s was not part of the food court, seeing this video brings back memories. This is before the carousel was installed in the center of the mall.
JEVUS123 You are right, the mcDonalds was on the JC penny wing. After the carousel that middle section has a water feature with fish. All is gone now. Sears just closes so mall not doing well.
This is a trip, my friends and I would shop there in the 80's I use to live about 5 miles from that mall. On the 2nd floor there use to be an arcade. It was great. Just outside on the other side of the mall, we would also watch movies at the AMC theater. Couple miles down the road from the theater, there was Showboat and Malibu grand prix. We would play arcade games, miniature golf and drive go carts. Good times.
@@intlDrx7 retroforce6919 is not mistaken. There used to be an arcade on the 2nd floor called Time Out in front of Sears in the 80s. It was to the right of a big store that was like a drug store where the Champs is now. Time Out was to the right. They featured games like Double Dragon, Golden Axe, Street Fighter 1, Final Fight, Shinobi, R-Type, After Burner moving machine, and a Power Drift 2 player machine later. A feel Ski ball in the back and some Pinball machines. It was a very small arcade but was packed with great hits.
@@MeritoriousLeeYou're right it was called Time Out, I remember playing Street Fighter 1 when it first came out at Time Out. I nearly broke my wrist playing it, it had these 2 huge hard pads you smash down with your hands. Back in 1989 I was a sophomore at Wilson High
Holy time warp! I'm going to get something to eat at Fiddlers Three Restaurant then maybe go to Waldenbooks or B Dalton. I need to buy some stationery at JK Gill while I'm at it.
I visited the mall today (Sep-14-24) and it’s a ghost town in there. Only food they even got in the mall anymore is the wetzel pretzel and kublai khan. It was heartbreaking to see
Anyone remember the name of the Italian restaurant right at the main entrance. The entire dining area was decorated with newspaper and they had really good baked ziti.
This mall suffered big time from the "Asian Invasion" of the 1990s. After the LA riots, Asians moved east to the suburbs and instead of assimilating they just changed the whole area. Pretty sad.
I went to the puente hills mall a couple weeks ago and man, that mall is dead. I'm surprised it hasn't closed down by now. The only reason it gets any traffic is because of the movie theater and Round 1. It's actually quite sad.
@@shoxsnake988 There was an AMC at Puente Hills Mall in the 70s and 80s but it was not actually inside the mall. It was very close by though, located on the same lot. It had six theaters. By 1989 they'd opened up a second AMC with four theaters directly behind it.
I'm surprised that you were allowed to record inside the Puente Hills Mall without no security or sale associates telling you to turn off your camera at that time. Nowadays, they'll ask you to leave the premises if you record inside a shopping mall.
You should've gotten the j.c penny part of the mall because you can see it in the background when Marty is driving the DeLorean while the Libyans are chasing after him in BTTF
They lost business sadly during that time and everyone goes to the West Covina Mall now on and the popular stores are AMC theatres and Round 1 at the Puente Hills Mall.
Nowadays, the mall is over half vacant. I wish the mall was popping like it used to. Fill the mall with businesses, like idc if its just boba shops like the rest of the town. The emptiness really bums me out
I was a senior at Los Altos High School at this time. Puente Hills Mall was the place to be.

@@shoxsnake988 There was an AMC at Puente Hills Mall in the 70s and 80s but it was not actually inside the mall. It was very close by though, located on the same lot. It had six theaters. By 1989 they'd opened up a second AMC with four theaters directly behind it.
I get my haircut at JC Penneys at that mall, stylist was a hot blond and drives a red colored pontiac fiero. Early to mid eighties.
I'm surprised that you were allowed to record inside the Puente Hills Mall without no security or sale associates telling you to turn off your camera at that time. Nowadays, they'll ask you to leave the premises if you record inside a shopping mall.
JustForSneaks Ent. Back then they weren’t scared by it going onlinr
@@DiamanteDea Make sense.
What happened to the carousel 🎠??
@1:34 Oh shit. I didn't know this was Ty Lopez behind the camcorder! "NAWWLIDGE! "
You should be up for an award or something Gilbert
You should've gotten the j.c penny part of the mall because you can see it in the background when Marty is driving the DeLorean while the Libyans are chasing after him in BTTF
I love how Cynthia is like "Oh Gilbert!" she was cute haha
Have You Been To The Puente Hills Mall Lately Because It Could Have Gotten Worse Due To COVID-19?
They lost business sadly during that time and everyone goes to the West Covina Mall now on and the popular stores are AMC theatres and Round 1 at the Puente Hills Mall.
SANRIO 💕
Dude...I remember the clock!!
The day before my brothers 5th birthday.
Nowadays, the mall is over half vacant. I wish the mall was popping like it used to. Fill the mall with businesses, like idc if its just boba shops like the rest of the town. The emptiness really bums me out
Now the only thing saving that mall is round 1. I miss going there
It's strange to realize that when this was filmed, the very first full episode of the Simpson's was broadcasted!
