I put a bell on one of my cows last summer, my neighbor complained that the noise drove him nuts. I think I will put them on all 40 cows this summer. Lol Take care.
I'm a Swiss gal, too. My great great grandfather was one of the original settlers of New Glarus. Very nice work keeping the heritage alive. Cowbells are one sound from my childhood I miss on a warm summer night.
So nice to see you want to carry on family heritage and tradition my Italian heritage is all but gone now in my family and others I know with each generation passing...I miss it so much in my old age now but once its gone its gone never to come back.
I grew up on a small dairy farm in NE Iowa in the 1950’s and 1960’s. We had a few cows with bells on, but never all of them. Nearly every farm in our community had a dairy herd with 30-50 milk cows. I spent one summer working in our local country cheese plant. We made cheddar cheese curds, put them in 280# barrels, kept them in a cooler and Kraft foods picked them up once a week to further process them. We even had a few farmers who delivered the milk to the cheese factory every day in 10 gallon cans. Our neighborhood was dominated by Holstein cows. We had Jerseys, several farms had Brown Swiss and there were a few Guernsey herds. No Ayrshires or Milking Shorthorns in our immediate area. The farm next to the farm I grew up on is still milking Jerseys and producing for the organic milk market. There are few dairies left in the area. But those left are quite large and very well managed.
@@GierokFarms the small creameries in Northeast Iowa are nearly all gone. I think the organic farmer next to our home farm sells to Organic Valley in Lefargs, WI.
Very interesting but noisy. The first video of yours that I watch I thought the cowbells were a little over the top and needed to go. I think I would opt for GPS 😆😆😆😊😊. I enjoyed watching how you made them and the explanation of why you use them. I was born on a dairy farm in Watertown WI (but live in Alaska now). I seem to remember a couple of my dad's lead (boss) cows having bells on them. I enjoy watching your videos because it reminds me of the dairy farming that I remember.😊😊
I saw a video a while back where your Dad was talking about cowbells and some that came from Switzerland. I was fascinated. We use cowbells too at least a few. I applaud you for keeping the tradition alive. When I think of Brown Swiss cattle I especially think of cowbells.
Stumbled across your channel a while ago and it has become one of my favourite. Didnt know hill farms excisted in America until I saw your videos😂 Greetings from a sheep farmer in hilly Norway! 😀
Got to say this was one of your best videos. Have to like anyone who will take on a job that comes out well!! Those cow bells 🔔 will do job for generations!! Thanks 😊.
That is Awesome that you all still use bells. My mom talked about her dad using them when she was little. You should weld a G on them for your last name.
We are from Ontario Canada years ago we had dairy we made and had cow bells on all cows we made our own good horse leather for belt and usually what ever you could get for metal sometimes steel or copper keep up you life style sir
Nice work. Never had cow bells on my dad's farm. We're German so that might have been part of it., also, they never had the amount of pasture to roam that your herd has. Thanks for the family history.
I have been thinking about you bells and making them. If you can come by a piece of 4” channel iron that will make a great mound for bending your material on. Just clamp it down on one edge, make sure everything is lined up. Then heat , bend and work with your hammer. And as they say the rest is a piece of cake. Forgive me if I make it sound so easy it isn’t but I did this kind of stuff for a long time and loved being creative. .
Great video! and nice job on the bells we also use bells we don't do them ourselves but just a week ago i was over in switzerland and we buy a few new ones
a great video it's a beautiful tradition Which region of Switzerland did your grandfather come from? best greetings from e small Farmer from Switzerland😁
Nice job bud. You know when I found you guys on RUclips I couldn't figure out why your dad looks so familiar. I get the country today newspaper and I'm 90% sure your family had an article in there I think it was about that community breakfast that you guys hosted
Really cool! The only thing I could think of easier making my own is if I started with some big rectangular tubing. I wonder if it would be useful to tailor the size or more specifically the tone/timbre of the bells differently for bulls, heifers or what have you?
Great video, is it true you can regognise the cow with the sound of her bell? You should stamp your initials on them , then your grandkids can see who made them .
You need to invest in some dark welding goggles to protect your eyes. If it happens enough times with clear protective glasses you will burn your retinas.
Only bell went on the bull............For safety and you could hear how "Progress" was being made..............For me that sound drives me nuts, I don't have one on my bull anymore, but my sister misses the noise, I said with her in the farm house and the barn yard right out the window, I don't think you would miss it as much as you think.
Since I have been with you all I have a few questions. How many acres do you farm? How many cows do you have in your herd? How many planting acres do you use? ETC Try working on a genealogy of your family and farm that would be a neat thing.

Now you got a how to video😁😁😁😁😂😂😄😂
Sounds like a great idea Lol, thanks for watching!
What a douchebag. Really that's why I'm glad my closest neighbor is out of ear shot.
That's Cool 😎 it sounds so nice 👍😊
Very nice work. While watching I found myself looking away as you welded, recalling my father telling me 60 years ago. "Don't look at the weld!"
Thank you!
Showed Dad your video and he said they used cowbells when they milked! Cool 😎 video love that noise on the cows!

New Glarus 👍 . Love the town

cool family tradition, I love hearing the cow bells after milking in the evening!
Thanks Rick!
Being a farm kid from Central Minnesota I enjoy watching your videos! I'm not a kid anymore by the way I'm going to be 79 this year!
My boss/friend is 79 this year still milks 25 cows and does all the row crop farming he can and is still a kid at heart
Amen!
Still have my Grandfathers/Dads cowbells... I have a couple handmade that are well over 100 years old...
That's so cool!

I really admire you preserving old ways,, and family traditions. Something about making it yourself, just makes it better! Well done. 👏
Thank you Timmy!

It makes us happy to hear about all the good memories we bring back for some of you! Thank you so much for commenting and watching!
What a great family tradition.
I love it.
Thanks Frank!
It’s all about family pride and a way of self happiness
every cow has its own bell that it wears all summer long. the cattle, calves and goats also wear bells! Greetings from beautiful Switzerland🇨🇭

Me too! Thanks Anthony!
Excellent video. Way to keep the tradition going. The cow bell and your keeping of the old fashion is what caught my eye.
Stumbled across your channel a while ago and it has become one of my favourite. Didnt know hill farms excisted in America until I saw your videos😂 Greetings from a sheep farmer in hilly Norway! 😀
Thank you for finding us, it sure is a beautiful place to farm!

Thank you Stan it means a lot!
Great job on the cow bells it’s always good to know where the steaks are
That's funny!
They make a nice little bender that fits in the vise that works well.
I imagine there's a nice tool for that!
That is Awesome that you all still use bells. My mom talked about her dad using them when she was little. You should weld a G on them for your last name.
Actually that's a cool idea
That's a Great Idea!
Its very cool
Thank you!
Great job! .... and they also sound good, nothing like a bell on a prairie.
Thank you!
Nice workmanship 👏👏👏 good idea on the clapper.
And thanks for answering my cowbell question 🐄
Pretty cool.
Thank you!
Be nice to talk more about your family history. From farming in Switzerland and going to America.. be very interesting.
I wish both my grandpas were still around, they could tell a lot of good stories!
They sure sound nice, well done. Maybe we'll put some on our beef cows.
Thanks, I bet that would be cool!
Looks good I think it is awesome that you guys still use bells
We are from Ontario Canada years ago we had dairy we made and had cow bells on all cows we made our own good horse leather for belt and usually what ever you could get for metal sometimes steel or copper keep up you life style sir

Those bell shops are really cool!
@@GierokFarms oh yes they are i could stay there for ages and just look around
Good job
Looks good I agree family heirloom. How many cows do you have? I'm thinking you would only use a bell on the milk cows and not all are needed ?
Thanks James, Mainly the Milking herd gets them!
Get your bell making process streamlined and you can start selling them on your Etsy store. Who needs T-shirt merch when you've got cow bells?
Great job very interesting 👍
Would it be possible to use some thin walled rectangular tubing? That way you would only have to weld the top on and no bending.
nice bells!
Nice work

Thanks Adam! Talk about a small world that's really cool!
You can always use some more cowbell.
Never enough lol!
One comment from a metal fabricator of old. For the loop on the top use 3/8 rod. It will save the cows neck strap.
Good
More cowbell!
Heck Yeah!
More cow bell ! Lol
Really cool! The only thing I could think of easier making my own is if I started with some big rectangular tubing. I wonder if it would be useful to tailor the size or more specifically the tone/timbre of the bells differently for bulls, heifers or what have you?
Yeah if we started with a clean slate that would be a good idea to have different bells for different ages, like a first calf hiefer!
Very interesting. Good job. Would you care for a handmade welder hat from my sister in arms?
Great video, is it true you can regognise the cow with the sound of her bell? You should stamp your initials on them , then your grandkids can see who made them .
That's a Great Idea!
I've read that a cowbell may decrease milk production, due to the possibility of inducing noise stress. Have you noticed this in your herd?
Nope I don't think it dose.
You need to invest in some dark welding goggles to protect your eyes. If it happens enough times with clear protective glasses you will burn your retinas.

Should of ground your initials in them
They would drive me nuts it would be to loud in our darn
I use a flap disc on my grinder to get things all rounded off and smooth. Works a lot faster too.
