Greatest rivalry in strongman history. If not greatest rivalry in all sports. In most sports when you compare the two G.O.A.T.s you can only speculate because they didn’t compete in the same era. These two went head to head so many times and were always so close.
It’s not only impressive how much they pushed each other it’s amazing how much they pushed the sport. Because of these two professional strongmen today can have careers more like Brian and less like Zydrunas and still be financially well off. I don’t care which one is your favorite they are both the GOATs.

Every time I look these things up on strongmanarchives, one thing stands out. There are 5 people who dominate the 'International wins'. BigZ, Pudzianowski, Hafthor, Brian Shaw and a guy nobody ever talks about. The only time I've ever heard you mention Radzikowski, was something about him being a cheerful, funny guy behind the scenes.
He's the only other person with a 3 digit contest count and has won 22 of them. How come nobody talks about him? Is it because he always did poor on WSM?

    • @jimllbreakit8537

It’s likely he’s not in that goat conversation because the majority of his wins were in the Strongman Champions League, which became less prestigious over time to the point where I rarely see it mentioned online. They do themselves no favours by having very little social media presence and by making it difficult to watch.

    Deadlifts: equal, slightly Big Z
    Resistance: equal
So it is very hard....Big Z was a little stronger static. And maybe a little balanced. Both of them was awesome.

Circus dumbbell is either even or else goes to Brian. Big Z is the goat at log press (and also beats Brian on most overhead events) but dumbbell is a different beast.

I was usually rooting for the the folks who always came so close to taking the WSM gold and then finally won like Magnus Samuelsson, Phil Pfister, Svend Karlsen and Hafthor Bjornsson. I loved watching the greats too of course, like Shaw, Savickas, Magnusson, and Pudzianowski. The somewhat smaller guys like Jouko Ahola and Gary Taylor were pretty badass as they triumphed over the giants.

there is no competition here, Big Z is in his own leage. Brian may have won same amount of WSM titles, but he compete like 2 times a year. Big Z has won it all and used to compete all year long. If i remember correct he even won Strongman champions leage in 2012 or around that time? I feel this is about the same as compairing a "single event world record" to the world records set in a full competition.

I have always hated the emphasis on the stones. It’s honestly made me resent them to a certain degree.
Jon Pall in ‘88, Magnus in 1994, and Phil Pfister in ‘06 were some of the most memorable for me and all of those were before the whole Double Points, Stone Off etc etc Stone bullshit was implemented. I think it cheapens the sport.

The result is a surprise for me, I thought Brian would take a win on this one. Don't get me wrong, I still consider Big Z as the best strongman ever, but I also remember he was already successful (and battle scarred) before Brian's first competitions, he also competed more, often not at 100% while Brian became quite selective about comps he is participating, giving him a headstart over injured Zydrunas.
What about a video (or a series) of serious, often career ending injuries? It could be informative to watch how Zydrunas had neck/shoulder injury that stopped his dominance, Brian's hamstring tear that made his deadlift significantly weaker and what happend with Martins that took him year and a half to recover.

I never understood why Brian didn't up his overhead game. He has some massive levers as shoulders. You would think that he would be in some of the 210+ kg categories such as axle clean and log lift! he does the Cyr dumbbell so well, but he is par for the course in most overhead events!

I know they're both so good that neither is definitively better than the other buuuuuut my heart has to go with Z! For me, it's the fact that he broke so many records, the fact that he was such a static monster, the fact that he could have won even more WSM titles if he had competed more during the Pudzianowski era, the sheer number of titles he won, the fact that he didn't start losing to Brian until he was arguably past his prime, and the fact that he was such a dominant force at the Arnolds (which is just such a heavy and brutal competition)!

  • @Saccian
