Regarding the yen. I am from Switzerland and was in Japan for the past 14 days. Instead of getting all the cash beforehand I opted just using Revolut to transfer chf to yen daily because over the course of my vacation the rates went from 1chf 199 yen to 1chf 203 yen.
When I went in summer 2025 1chf was 175 yen. The prices didn't increase so basically everything was on a massive discount for me this time.
    They are so fucked.
I talked to some young guys in an Onsen in Yamagata and when the economy came up they looked fucking dejected. They are also bummed they are basically forced to move away from their home town in the country side to a mega city (even though they don't really like the urban lifestyle) just because there are no opportunities outside of those.

I think Trump thought he could do a Wuhan lab COVID leak on the Epstein file. For those who forgot about the Wuhan lab COVID leak. He was blaming the COVID outbreak on the Wuhan lab to avoid taking accountability for the government's failure to respond. When it turned out that the American government was one of the lab's main funders and that Trump was the one who restarted the payment. The whole story was immediately swept under the rug, and the reaction was not dissimilar to the Epstein file; however, the story fizzled out, unlike the Epstein file.

It's kinda understandable it got swept under the rug, many people were burnt out just living day to day and sometimes living in traumatic hellscapes (i.e. where COVID outbreaks were high as well as the death toll.) That's when I started seriously cutting myself off from the news unless I was A) in a stable headspace and B) actually wanted to read up on the news because I was constantly spiraling everyday. I saw a bit about the Wuhan lab but didn't dig into it because at that point in time why tf would I care? Knowing how it started wouldn't change anything.

I want to remain positive, and at the very least my "improvements" from 2023 involve me trying not to spread doomerism everywhere because it doesn't really help ( I just stick to relationship comment sections lol).
But at the same time, the last year has made it really hard, dude. This video here really just encapsulated so much going on, and even so much going on under my nose (like the fact Japan's new plans involve militarizing again and blowing up their economy to do so). To hear all that and then hear towards the end "I think there's shit you can do...there's always ways to make the best of a situation"... that either takes some incredible resilience or incredible privileged and shielding from the world (even if you empathize with those stuck in the chaos).
I basically am that story of the "meta layoff who can't find comparable work". You go through your career and build your resume to be stronger and stronger... then one day you have a job search worse than back when you were graduating college and hoping anyone would respond to your resume of 0 YOE and maybe a few class projects? How does that not crack you a bit?
I wouldn't call myself "resilient", but I also feel I can still overcome all this (mostly becaue my family and support network won't let me fall that easily), and pivoted long term to ways to not get back in this trap. So I'll be fine. I don't blame others at all with less support that simply call it quits over all this.

The average voter literally does not know the difference between bad and worse because it doesn't directly affect them in the short term. That's why the 100-or-so-odd consultants that work on the campaign (not to mention the candidate) should be browbeaten and scolded into adopting more popular platforms. Instead of trying to scold millions of people for not voting or voting against your preference. People vote third party, or against their interests, or not at all for a reason. You need to give them a reason to do otherwise. The most economic way to do that is to convince those 100 people, who hold all the power and money, and not 10 million random voters.

Which is why I said "sometimes." Primaries are the best time to influence a candidate. Once that candidate is selected, getting someone who is at least partially aligned with your values is a lot better than having someone who opposes it. Look at what has happened with Trump in office right now: USAID is gone, we have brownshirts/gestapo terrorizing people, and the EPA just decided it no longer has to care about CO2 emissions. I teach, and some of my students have had family members abducted by ICE and almost got picked up. I'd rather have milquetoast Harris or Newsom than see my kiddos suffer, but that's just me.

Biden gave us Lina Khan in the FTC and the first legitimate attempt to regulate big business in a long time. Trump gave us three SCOTUS justices who are bought and paid for by The Federalist Society, a gutted FTC and EPA, and masked thugs with carte blanche to terrorize people in the streets. When you've got two bad choices, sometimes you have to run through the pros and cons, weigh the risks, and go with which is going to do the least amount of harm. Then you move onto the other forms of political action you can take (volunteering, protesting, petition-signing, and running for office yourself). The US is governed by the People, which mean People need to participate beyond just choosing a President every 4 years.

To steelman the anti-Newsom argument in a length likely inappropriate for a RUclips comment, I think they understand that Vance is worse than Newsom, but they feel that if they don't protest Newsom they'll show the dems that they can give us any candidate they want as long as they're the lesser evil (and a lesser evil than Trump isn't really any kind of victory)... So by rejecting the lesser evil this one time, they may force the dems to consider putting forth a more progressive candidate to energize the base even if it goes against their corporate clients. And implicit in THAT motivation is the idea that Vance won't have anything like the mandate Trump currently has, and will be evil but ineffective.
Now would the dems ever actually float anyone more progressive than Newsom? I don't think so - I think capital has gained significant influence on most government decisions (with moments of resistance), and capital will continue to prevent any major changes that would assist with wealth disparity, worker's rights, union formation and power, etc while also getting favorable legislation passed regardless of who's in office or congress or the supreme court. Would Vance be ineffective? I don't know, but at this moment I'm unwilling to take that bet.
There are 3 years to go, everything will change and all predictions made right now will probably look silly when the time comes... That said, right now I feel like they're going to float Newsom, he's going to win because the republicans are so unpopular, and we're going to continue in this death spiral where the republicans win and drag us closer to ruin, then the democrats win and either drag us closer to ruin more slowly or just pause the movement while in office.
Not to say NOTHING good happens, but... It's hard to ignore the trajectory we've been on for a long time now. Not to mention the current supreme court is unlikely to change for a while, and that's a very significant hurdle to any sort of progressive policy-making given how willing they are to make a mockery of the entire American legal system in front of the public... They've already laid bare what most 'more-partisan-than-average' people have known for a long time: There is no impartial justice system. The difference is that now they don't even seem to feel the need to PRETEND to be impartial - though at least for the time being they DO seem to view the constitution as at least somewhat limiting of their ability to rule however they want.

What I worry about is that the next administration in America will have such a damaged country to deal with when they come in they will blame whoever is in for their hardship and not realise they are just picking up the pieces of the 2nd trump administration because I feel like that’s what is giving Reform popularity in the UK right now.

What sucks about all these candidates tho, and this is true for pretty much every politician now, is that they all engage in twitter roast battles and constantly "dunk on" the other side like they're middle school tweens. Wish we could go back to a time where politicians at least pretended to respect their opponents and maintained professional decorum.

What people dont seem to understand is that a Non-Trump government isnt going to fix sh't. Geopolitical thinking is long-term and americans have proven that voting for someone like Trump wasnt just a fluke.
With those results and these consequences (which have been laid bare before the voters eyes, before they had to vote!) the US became a fundamentally untrustworthy and instable partner for any long term cooperations.
I honestly dont see this change for at least a decade with visible cultural relaxation of all the ideological radical infighting or a fundamental dismantling and rebuilding of the political system to prevent future borderline failures of the checks and balances and a system that consists of more than two parties.

I think most of the world understands that Trump is a one-off psycho. most of the world itself is having its own isolationist, conservative push, so I dont think they care or want relations with the United States anyway, and such relations would be unpopular. I think this is just apart of a larger trend of the US no longer being the separate city upon a hill; we have to deal with the same economic forces that are impacting Europe, and because we aren't safe from them for one of the few times in our history, we're doing poorly, and people don't really want relations with us.

@bollorice7177as a European I can tell you that we will not rally with you..those times are gone now..I’m not saying we couldn’t or deep down wouldn’t want to - we just can’t, this is not just political, this is social and economic: we have been rallying around you, for 70 YEARS, during the Cold War, sure our interests were aligned, but we went to Afghanistan for you, we went to Iraq for you, we overlooked when snowden told us you were illegally spying on our governments, businesses and people, we looked away when your companies were avoiding taxes and when we became increasingly dependent on US tech giants who would have been fined out of existence for privacy violations here…we were friends after all, we shared common values
But people have started to question what that dependence has gotten us- threats, insults and extortion
We are diversifying away from the US, no political shift will change that: questions you have to answer: what is a persons life worth/ what about the dignity of a person, what is ur stance on international laws, what direction will US tech go into - this future the pedophilic cabal has outlined where AI does all the jobs and money accrues to the owners is not one we want to follow, can you be trusted on defense issues long-term? Can you be relied upon at all? How will you deal long term with the loss of US global power…before you can lead or be rallied around you need answers to these questions..you need to know WHERE you want to lead ur allies before you can lead them against some ‘enemy’ - like before on some nostalgia basis is not a sufficient direction, its not a direction that’s available

To even pretend that Trump is a one-off is in the best case delusional and in the worst outright psychotic.
And yes, other countries (sadly not just european) have currently similar issues with unedjucated masses that are voting for radical parties that play snake-oil salesmen.

@xEnder515 Realistically you can vote between the party with goon squads shooting people in the streets, putting people in camps without due process, rapidly erasing civil rights for you and your fellow countrymen OR the guys not quite left enough for you. If that math is hard for you or you are willing to gamble another 4 years of this, you are either incredibly privileged to not feel any of the consequences this would have or this world is truly completely fucked.

I feel like locking in on whoever comes next no matter what is a mistake if they know they have your unconditional support they will only do the bare minimum to stay in power

If Newsom in real life was like his Twitter account then I would vote for him, but he’s not who the country needs right now.

If Newsom had values or principles I'd consider it. I don't want 4 years of a holding pattern that gives the right and owner/Epstein class time to regroup while demoralizing Dem voters.

@jlp6864I mean that’s what the primary is for. People are acting like it’s newsome or Vance and it’s still 2026.

Damn, can't believe I was a doomer about Trump, his approval is now cratered and we only have to deal with him for 3 more years. Oh well, we can trust the US public to have learned their lesson and never fall for such obvious lies and vote for an idiot ever again...just like after Bush and Bush and Trump...

I really wish history wasn't so obnoxious about how much it repeats itself. Like we get it dude. This is your gimmick, whatever.
Jokes aside, I don't understand how people haven't figured this shit out by now. My best guess is that they're just idiots.
