  • You may have heard of Tai Chi Push Hand practice, and you may have learned that it is a partner practice essential to Tai Chi. But why is it uniquely important? The answer is that while form and qigong practice helps you master YOUR energy, Push Hand extends your skill beyond yourself, to control the energy in ANOTHER person's body.
As you learn to control an opponent's energy, you transcend the limitations posed by struggling against their force. Their opposition becomes a resource for you. You may have already begun to imagine how this can be useful in any conflict, aside from combat.
What would your interactions be like when you can freely guide any energy you encounter? And how can a movement practice like Push Hands help make this mentality a part of your daily life outside of Tai Chi practice?
We will continue to explore the elegant purposes of Push Hand practice, including what it really means to be centered, to control the center, to use Ting Jin, any of course, how to control Qi itself. These understandings will form the foundation to become skillful in mastering the energy of Tai Chi. Stay tuned!

    Exactly, Master,
Pushing hands is probasbly the best exercise to learn feeling the opponent´s energy and taking proper action whether to yiel or to follow.
Our Kung Fu instructors also emphasized the improved reaction through sensing the opponents body through hands than sight.
The late Bruce Lee also prefered to do it even with eyes blinded.
Congratulation. Paul.68, retired instructor of Karate.

Absolutely! It sounds like you have had fantastic instructors, and been a good one yourself! It's wonderful to develop the awareness of when to yield and when to follow, and also to be able to sense beyond what our eyes can see. And even if you are retired from instructing, I'm sure you continue to experience the benefits of this wisdom that you have cultivated in your life and the lives you touch. Thank you for the comment Paul.
      With regards,
      Zongqing

With energy control although you’re not expending lots of energy does the 90 degree lock position and 180 degree help in controlling energy expenditure ?

Yes you're totally on the right track. Specifically, clashing while going opposite directions with them is the most difficult. Whereas shearing and criss crossing their line of intention (which tends to line up with their line of force) is much more effective. Thanks for the good question!

When you “follow” him as you say, what of him are you actually following? For instance, his path of least or greatest resistance? His weighted energy momentum? Please explain. 😳🤷🏻🫢/👌✌️🤲☝️🤔

After you use Peng to float your opponent, you have already Na and Hua him. You can easily apply any Jin after that. Can you apply Ji without Peng?
I have been taught Ji as a triangulation and focused squeeze.
Would also love to see more about Kao. While I agree the shoulder strike is a very simplistic view of Kao, it is much more than that, your explanation about the Qi going through the back is interesting and I would to know more. Obviously, Qu goes through the back, but I feel there is something more to your explanation that I don't understand yet.

You're right to think that once you have floated someone with Peng, which results in a successful Hua, you can easily apply any Jin after that. Ji without Peng can work but you may find it to be difficult or clashing with the opponent's force. If you consider the form of Ji itself, it first rises with Peng in both hands before advancing forward together. Does that align with your understanding of triangulation?
Regarding squeeze, consider what is squeezing? Does that mean you are generating force against yourself, left hand pushing against the other? And how does that align with Tai Chi Principles of force usage? Whatever you discover, how does it benefit from having the support of other energies?
Regarding Kao, yes I think Kao is a very important topic. Having a useful understanding of Peng and Kao first helps people progress in Tai Chi much more comfortably. Everyone knows qi flows in the back yes. What Kao refers to is the Awareness of the Qi on the surface of the back. In conflict, we tend to have our awareness on where we are touching or hitting or being hit. But if you stay that way you create continued conflict and tension.
For example, if you and I disagree about how to do Ji, you can be upset about what I say that is different and I can be upset about what you said that is different and we will internet argue forever ha ha. But if we look aside from the differences, we can realize that we both love tai chi and what we both want is just to do tai chi even better. So if we work together from there what can we discover?
So the Kao Awareness moves you beyond the conflict to access the capacity of your spirit and energy to completely Hua neutralize their attack. It is more of an Awareness, than a direction of Qi flow. Let yourself imagine yourself having the relaxed state of Song as someone press on you, and direct that awareness of the pressure throughout the surface of your back. As that pressure transforms and your Awareness of the back grows you will access more and more of Kua's Quality. When you neutralize people with greater ease, what deeper meaning to Kao do you think you will find?
Thanks for the questions and the great discussion! Your input is very valuable for our community!
