When the Pipemasters is on, and Pipeline is good, you only have 1.5hrs in the morning and 2hrs in the afternoon, to try and get a wave at Pipeline. I squeaked a few waves before and after the comp, ON MY BIRTHDAY! Score! Then Hawaii got hit by the massive swell that ran the Jaws contest, so instead of grabbing a 10'6" surfboard to charge, I grabbed a 7'6" fishing rod to catch my FIRST EVER Bonefish!!! After 3 years of trying, I finally did it, thanks to Fisher Heverly.

Awesome stuff. Also 30 is still young. You might not feel that way, but it's true. Now that I'm 57, I can look back and realize how young I really was when I was 30 (I could still surf really well, go hiking, do basically anything I wanted). Now that I'm 57, I'm officially "old." I just can't do the things I could do in my 20s and 30s. So realize you're still young and enjoy the things you love while you are still young. You caught some awesome waves at Pipe (every Surfers dream). I live in Florida now, but I learned to surf on choppy disorganized waves near Corpus Christi in the Gulf of Mexico about 40 years ago as a teenager. I was lucky enough to travel around in my 20s and surf some classic spots during high surf advisories (California, Baja, Mainland Mexico, Puerto Rico, etc....), and I've surfed spots up and down the East Coast of the U.S. for years. Unfortunately, I never made it to Hawaii. It was always my dream to surf Pipe (I'm a Goofy foot too) on a good day. Take Care

Hawaiian bonefish ..... Screamer !!! The first one was five pounder maybe bigger . Ten pound club for bonefish is trophy !! One of the hottest fish on the planet when they get that big !! Loved it Brett , hope you get some more !!
I guessed 3.5-4, but it was a very thick and wide fish... though the last thing I ever want t do is exaggerate haha.

Your editing is clear and clean always showing love through your moving pictures for your audience. @@brettbarley I really like that! I see your work get better every episode. I do have a question, and I hope it's not out of place. Do you pay videographers for clips of you, or are they provided by your sponsors for specific sessions, or do the videographers know what your doing and want to video you in your home break sessions and share the footage with you for credit in the VLOGS? I have a hard time finding people to help make something happen without paying for their time.
At him I mostly film with Jeffrey O’Neil who is Real Watersports video guy. So when we shoot, he’s on the clock with real. Except Sat/sun then those days I pay him. When I travel I buy footage from people. But in Hawaii O’Neill provides fillers... or I link up with friends who are shooting other guys, but happen to get clips of me.
Basically any footage I get is payed for by me, or one of my sponsors.
Never knew there were bone fish in Hawaii . Had a 14ft board set up for fishing here in Carlsbad. Great alternative craft. Great video Brett

If I had a choice I would every year... that’s not how it works. They take the top 16 ranked Hawaiians (yes Hawaiians only) from the Volcom Pipe Pro, plus Billabong team riders, plus a couple top WQS guys running for vans triple crown. There’s no other way to get in.

Congrats on the bonefish!! Bonefish and tarpon on a fly rod is definitely on my bucket list. I cringed on the hook in the finger.. had a treble hook in the back from a " friend " once no fun! I think the bonefish make good fish cakes, but the way their bone structure is, you can't filet them like regular fish. majority of people only fish for them for sport, because like you said, they are SO strong!

OK Mr Barley- That was a beautiful video...HOWEVER I am going to give you a hard time...Dude you cant fish for bonefish with a spinning rod! God made bonefish as the ultimate quarry for fly fishing! What's next, are you going to start boogie boarding instead of standup surfing!!!! You gotta chase those things with an 8 weight fly rod and a little teeny crab fly- Now that is the ultimate pinnacle of fishing!

I had it and can throw it... problem was, the tide was never as low as you want for the fly. It was kind of a high-low tide. So the fly was a huge gamble... and since I’d never caught one before, we went for better odds. Fly is my dream way t catch em though.

I believe they are decent, but you have to scoop the meat out with a spoon, due to their bone structure you cant fillet like a normal fish. majority of people do not eat them... but, Hawaiians do, and make fish cakes with em.
