edit* oh yeah, their servers died for like the first week so half the people who wanted to play couldn't and people didnt want to cue up for halo with portals.

Hey MewZe, I'm actually a gameplay dev at 1047 Games and wanted to say thanks for the thought provoking video and the stroll down memory lane! The '21 launch was definitely chaotic with the servers, but also a lot of fun to be a part of (it's crazy how much we've grown as a company since that launch). Sadly I can't give out Splitcoin, but if I could, I'd toss some your way for the great vid 😂Big fan of your channel and editing style, and please keep up the great content!

The jetpack in splitgate is one of the most overlooked aspects, *elevating* the movement to another level. It's not enough to be used as a mobility tool by itself, but it has enough juice and gives the player enough control that it works really well with the high velocity gunplay, and helps conteract the pretty high TTK

I’ve personally just put in the effort of practicing maps until I was smooth at traveling all around the map and be able to shoot at the same time while mid travel. And it truly makes you invincible at the game, and you eventually can see the actual skill gap with each player you fight.

I was top 50 on ps5. The game was so good, but the fact there wasn’t way to turn off cross play in ranked was so bad.
Splitgate is a PC dominated game. All the highest ranked players are PC. You will beat other console players, but you just won’t be able to swing around like you can on pc

I remember playing this when everyone else did and I had a good time. Sadly the gameplay loop just kinda fizzled out. There was nothing to really drive you to play more. The battle pass didn't offer much of value and the Twitch drop items were much more interesting cosmetic wise.

From what I saw, the biggest problem was that the skill factor was almost completely negated by portal peeking. So even if you did spend time getting good at the mechanics of the game, it didn't really matter. It reminds me a lot of Apex Legends, where there's all of this crazy, fun movement but the game tends to come down to who can hide better.

I still play it at least once or twice a week simply because I know that even if I'm not good, I can still learn from others and have fun with the ridiculous ways they've killed me. Several times now I've had fights where we take each other out simultaneously with BFBs.

  • @dragoslove

One aspect that I think held it back a bit is that being good at traditional shooters isn't good enough for it. Most shooters are very focused on reticule placement and predicting where an enemy's head will get when they come around a specific corner. The portals in splitgate are at variable height and you are often shooting at them blind. In addition the fun flying through the air movement is actually pretty bad at a higher level of play. As you get better you begin to realize that straying more than a foot or two from a portal is a great way to get yourself killed. The best players can move between any two points on a map in 3-5 portals which can take a second or two. Working with teams is even more difficult as when your movement gets better it's difficult for teammates to keep up.
There's a ton of depth here, but I don't know that it translates to the same crowd that likes Halo and CoD. I personally think it's a better game for that, but you can imagine why some players would fall off.

  • @hitbu9471

Personally, I never played it because it felt like players (from clips I saw online) became unreasonably good and sweaty instantly. Don’t get me wrong, players getting good is part of any gaming experience, but the skill chasm looked so great/daunting to a new/potential player that the idea of trying to hop in and learn the game was very unattractive. There was no ramping learning curve that looked immediately apparent. Obviously this is just my own experience and an EXTREMELY hard one to do anything about as a developer since again, players getting good at a game is only natural, but the rate at which they started tapping the skill ceiling was a little too quickly for me to ever want to try it.

I can speak to a few game design aspects that led to Splitgate's rapid falloff after the 2021 hype:
    1. Gimmick Mechanic - The portal mechanic is cool for a while, and it served really well to advertise the game to new players, but after a while the luster and cool-factor of it wears off, and it can't carry a game by itself. At the end of the day, once the portal mechanic sinks into the back of your mind, the game blends in to other shooters (especially Halo 5) in terms of visual and weapon design, so it's identity wears off. This occurs especially because the objectives of the game (usually kill people, either directly for points or to hold an objective against them) isn't achieved directly by using portals, so the gun-play becomes more important than the portals.
*How do you fix this?*: By placing more importance on the portal mechanic. This however, is a difficult issue because if you design around this mechanic first, then the gun-play won't get as much work, or the players will feel like the portal mechanic is hamfisted in.
    2. Competitive Design - From the level design (literally being placed in a competitive arena), to it's weapon, damage, and movement mechanics, and even many game mode types, are all designed to encourage and carry competition. While there is some goofy stuff, it mostly ended up being secondary and cosmetic to the competitive-first design present throughout the game. This is unappealing to casual audiences, who prefer usually to start up games just play with friends without getting sweaty.
*How do you fix this?*: By redesigning the identity of the game and introducing more casual friendly game modes. Take the game out of a literal arena with an audience cheering in the background. While Contamination and Fiesta are good ways to start, the rest of the game's design kinda drowns out their silliness.
    3. Boomer Shooter Imbalance - Ever try to go back and play any of the arena shooters that were born in or from the 90s or early 00s? You'll probably get your cheeks clapped by people who have been perfecting their skills since the game was released, and for most casual players, that's discouraging. The longer a game is alive, the closer it will come to the inverted bell curve of the boomer shooters, where you have many players of a really high skill level, and many players of a low skill level, but very few players to close the gap between the two islands of skill, which makes it extremely difficult or even impossible for new players who play more competitively to get better without getting discouraged. This is the state that Splitgate fell into shortly after it's fall-off.
*How do you fix this?*: This is a remarkably difficult problem to fix and it will always occur if a game lives for long enough, however, making sure to keep pulling in new players somehow will keep the issue at bay.
    4. High Multitasking Load - Players who can multitask in Splitgate are going to be some of the best players, period. While multitasking is a requirement in most FPS games, it's even more important in Splitgate because of the portal mechanic. You need to manage both your sightlines through the portal and around you, and focus on if your opponent is using portal tricks while you're fighting them, and this is right at the edge of the mental load for most players. You've probably seen it for yourself while playing Splitgate, a player staring through a portal getting shots off, completely oblivious to you behind them, or they completely miss that you put a portal behind them which allows you to get them from behind. Pushing this load onto players will mentally exhaust them much quicker than other similar games without portal mechanics.
*How do you fix this?*: This is another difficult issue to fix, however, you can mitigate and reduce mental load using "blinder mechanics" that keep the player focused. In Call of Duty for example, the blinder mechanics are aim down sights (focused towards killing), sprint (focused towards chasing and escaping), and crouching or going prone (focused towards waiting and ambushing), which makes it easier for their players to achieve the specific objective they're focused, explicitly knowing that they're going to have to transition to the other objectives. Splitgate would need a similar blinder mechanic for portals.
All of these aspects come together to create a game that appeals mostly to a very specific type of player, who is competitive and dedicates a lot of time to perfecting their skills and are able to keep up with the high mental load. This just isn't a game that someone can start up and relax with after work or school, which is what 90% of people really want a game for, so if somebody is looking through their Steam library after work, they are more likely to choose a slower, less competitive game to play in their free time.

this is basically every trendy game of the last 5 years . the cycle is someone makes a game , sponsors some streamers to play it for a week , the game all of the sudden is top 10 on steam , the sponsorship ends , streamers stop playing it , dies , repeat . remember a good while ago when friday the 13th the game released and it took the world by storm ? servers have shutted down 2 years ago . remember fortnite ? now it has like a 1/50 of a community of what it used to have . among us has 1/50 aswell , pubg might actually be the only exception to this even if that one too compared to its peak it has like nothing now but that game manages to have six figures daily still . all of this wouldn't happen if people didn't just see a guy on the internet play a game and then automatically go download it or buy it and assume that its the best thing in the world just because a random guy on the internet got payed to play it for like a week .

I loved this game, played with friends on stream a few times. Considered getting competitive with it but first ranked game I get stuck in a wall, couldn't kill myself/respawn, was just stuck there. Tried disconnecting and hopefully reconnect, wouldn't let me, because of that bug we lost. That horrible first ranked experience and the playing with bots (actual bots) made me stop playing. I figured if they haven't got the competitive system fleshed out yet, something simple like reconnecting, they wouldn't have done proper matchmaking. I'd wait until they fix those before revisiting it, unfortunately now they've stopped developing.

This game was super satisfying to play. The Halo Infinite launched I think had a part in killing off the player base. Everyone shifted their attention to the OG arena shooter, and once they played that for a week and realised how bad it was and how long they had waited for it, everyone was just left with a sour taste for Arena shooters in their mouth and kind of just forgot about Splitgate, moving back to the Battle Royal genre, which was more popular at the time.
Such a shame. I really had a lot of fun playing this game on PC. It wasn't abused by console aim assist like in Halo because it required too much movement and turning around when entering portals etc... Which made it enjoyable to play on PC.
