Thanks for your insights, James - no bad thing to offer a realistic view! I completely concur with your opinion about diminishing returns from 3-4 years - though to be frank, I've found this with *every* job I've ever had. Any changes I can't effect in 36 months are probably never going to happen on my watch, and it's time to move up or move on. Do you think the nature of the organisation makes a difference to the longevity of a role? My last two employers have been very M&A focused, which meant a constant stream of business integration and ops rationalisation. Even when there have been M&A specialists in place, they invariably ducked out once the core financial and legal issues were resolved, for the Executive and CoS to take forward product and service diversification. I would imagine the situation would be quite different in a very established and stable market, but that is based on nothing more than an assumption. Given the kind of value an experienced CoS would be able to leverage, a career path that really stands out to me would be a non-exec directorship or trustee portfolio - or in that same vein, an advisor for start-ups, etc.
