"I'll kill you _AND_ THE NIGHT!" is such a crazy thing to say.

I love this game and its other ps2 sequel. I played them a lot as a kid and I sort of look at them as a souls like precursor in a sense. Thanks for making this retrospective, this is an often forgotten game.

I picked this game up from a local buy/sell/trade game store called McVann's Video Games my sophomore year of high school. I had played the Game Boy classic Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge all growing up and also the Game Boy Advance's Circle of the Moon, so I had a great appreciation for the lore and concept already. Playing this game and seeing the origin story play out was such an awesome experience. The classic epic tale of selfless good vs prideful evil, a lot of spiritual elements make this game and series a must play.
After defeating death, I love Leon's response and message to Dracula: "........from this day on, the Belmont Clan will hunt the night."

Had a great time with this one back then. Glad to see it (mostly) still holds up, even for someone who didn't play it in its zeitgeist.

i also recommend the Lords of Shadow trilogy if your gonna do the Castlevania series, its a spin off of the series infmaous Dracula vs Belmont fued, but more tragic and personal. And a lovely story of redemption.

Late comment but pretty good video, Lament of innocence is one of my favorite games of all time from its awesome story, gameplay and OST, as for the platforming sections, it does require alot of perfectly timed jumps and patience to get through them but they're definitely not great which is probably why they're were nonexistent in Curse of Darkness and speaking of that game, I would recommend playing that masterpiece in the future.

good retrospective but such a bad choice to add the netflixvania part of trevor getting beaten by dracula because in the og games trevor destroyed him. belmonts are actually powerful chads and not pitiful drunkard weaklings. and it just ruins the epic mood of the epilogue.

Loved the video! I remember renting this ages ago. It was a lot of fun and I liked that it was the origins of the Belmont clan. For me, my favorite is probably Circle of the Moon. I have a lot of good memories playing that on GBA.

Hey man! Love your videos, I’ve been watching since the MGS retrospective and I’m glad to see you cover another one of my favorite franchises. If you want to try another game in the series, Rondo of Blood is the way to go. It’s generally considered the best “classic” game, and is still relatively obscure due to its limited releases in the west.

I've also only gotten into the series for real recently thanks to the Netflix series, but I've most certainly enjoyed it a lot. This game is one that really looks up my alley as a Devil May Cry fan too, but Konami doesn't seem to have interest in rereleasing the 3D titles yet, confusing just as much to me as it was to you. I don't think it's as much as genuine spite from fans at this point as much as it's probably that the other games are being held to an incredibly high standard, with it being half the namesake of metroidvanias, or as it's also been recently referred to as, "search action."
With that said, I'd also love to recommend the recent digital collections for Castlevania Requiem, the package of Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night on PS4, and the Castlevania Advance Collection, packaging four full Castlevania titles, the highest regarded being Aria of Sorrow from the Gameboy Advance. The Advance Collection is actually the package I picked up first, and while most would probably recommend starting with the Requiem collection for the two most popular titles in the series, I still found myself quite the fan despite the varying issues each title can have. If anything, Aria of Sorrow alone is a high recommendation, I most definitely see why it became another fan favorite.

TL,DR: Loud minority are the one's you've spoken to. Silent Majority, gave it a cult following after shelf life croaked.
The loud minority is the answer for your issue at the end of the video. Silent fans who enjoy the 3D games massively outweigh the "Hardcore 2D only" fans. The scores add up when you consider that. Also Lament of Innocence, despite it's reputation, like FF13 and DmC: Devil May Cry, both being divisive entries into their respective franchises, gained a cult following. Pushing it's popularity well after the initial reception. The loud ones will say Symphony of the Night is peak Castlevania, which I'm not gonna sit here and say it wasn't, but it can't be ignored that it was a flop on initial reception. Only becoming popular after it's shelf life in major retailers had expired. Becoming a cult classic, not unlike Lament of Innocence, hell, not unlike half of the Castlevania games, especially the 3D ones. In recent years I have seen videos of people praising Castlevania 64 for what it tried to do, and how it was an honorable attempt at transitioning the series into a 3D world. This is literally Castlevania's legacy, release divisive games and later on attain cult followings. In fact I'm almost certain any future titles will probably follow suit.

As a Castlevania fan since its inception, the series had been a slow, methodical trudge through darkness. At the time of its release, I remember this felt like a desperate grab at the DMC series action elements. In retrospect this is a pretty good game, but doesn't fit the series very well. And the platforming is terrible.

Why would that be hard to believe, that is a fact ?

fans didn't like this game because it got rid of Castlevania Legends from continuity because Iga didn't like the idea of the series starting out with a woman as the main character. This is what was being said in the CV community at the time of release. Iga didn't like Alucard having a child with a Belmont in the good ending of Legends to explain their unnatural power etc.

This is a FACTUAL lie and is not the reason why he removed it. Its just a lie spread so hard amongst the community that some fans who don't know any better or bother to do research such as yourself do not know. The ACTUAL reason he removed it is because it contradicted the established story of CV3 where it is outright stated that Trevor belmont is the FIRST Belmont to beat Dracula, that statement would become untrue if Legends remained canon hence its removal.
