I had to go farther to find tamarind. I guess I was lucky as a kid. When I moved to Canada more than a decade ago, I was a bit disappointed at how every tree is a pine tree or a variety that doesn't bear fruits for human enjoyment. Edit: There were lots of flying foxes (bats) during night time and when there's moon in the sky, we would lay outside and watch their migration. Amazing to see them flying way up.
You have to remember that some areas are actually meant to grow this type of fruit and others aren’t. You were pretty lucky to grow up where it did. Cool stuff man

This is a typical Pacific Islander back yard. Somethings they don’t tell you: The Bananas only sprout once, once harvested they get cut down and regrow (usually multiple banana plants will sprout together). The Papayas and other fruit trees if not taken care off turn into a breeding ground for all sorts of fruit insects. Coconut trees will smash a car windshield instantly (seen it happen a hundred times). I was born and raised on a island and we had mango, guava, coconut, soursap, avocado etc growing around our house. It was convenient but not without its own annoyances and negatives.
Papayas are one of those fruits that are almost always disappointing if you get them at the store in a place they are not native/can be grown, but so good if they are actually ripened on the tree.

When I lived in Mexico, we had a couple papaya trees, you are right nothing like a fresh papaya fresh off the tree, with a little lime and sugar. Yummmmmm
Our well is 7.9 so our soil is close to that naturally. However with all the mulch we ouch for slightly acidic soil. Most of the tropical trees need a neutral to slightly acidic soil

Isn't it weird how most of the things from our childhoods are just vanished? I used to pick wild hazelnuts and such in the late fall (I'm in northern Europe), but now those trees are gone. I've seen other countries say the same. Everything that used to grow wild is somehow just gone.

In the Philippines we call sprouted coconut "macapuno" and it's mostly preserved in sweet syrup. It's one of the main ingredients for fruit salad and Halo-Halo. They also turned this one into soft candies.
