They have made a nuclear powered laser that uses a nuclear weapon as the excitation source. It uses rods of selenium about the diameter of spaghetti, 28 of them per device. The rods are placed in the radiation case assembly with a clear aperture on the base of secondary nuclear assembly. It makes a laser beam of x rays that are extremely destructive to anything in their path. It is a real life version of the Real Genius laser except excited by a nuke. The efficiency is abysmal though, only 0.001% of the energy released ends up in the beam. Halfmium could also be used as it is a mode converter for the neutrons, in its case it can enter a meta stable state and emit a powerful coherent gamma ray pulse. The configuration is quite different though still nuke pumped. The fine halfmium rods are encased in a beryllium neutron multiplier that activates the halfmium very quickly. Then it makes a gamma ray pulse of a nanosecond or so.
