A 7800 version with cart slots for 2600 games and sd card and hdmi would be nice ...does AT games make these good they can keep atari stuff cuz Sega fired them thanks fully or genesismini
Hey John, I'm also glad to see that the emulation improved, and I can tell you why. To answer as to what games can be added via SD card: most likely the entire Atari 2600 library. AtGames got a commercial license to use the Stella emulator, which is the best 2600 emulator out there. Since Stella is virtually compatible with the entire Atari 2600 library, I have to imagine that anything you can throw at it you can throw at the Flashback 9. As for the arcade games, I'm guessing they're using MAME like they did with the arcade plug-n-plays and Legends Flashback system, so it may be possible to play older arcade games via SD card but I'm not certain.
If I'm interpreting what it says in the manual correctly, you can NOT use the SD card to add games. The SD card slot is only for installing firmware updates.
@@grgoblin All of AtGames's handhelds, and a number of their older plug-n-plays, allow for ROMs to be added via SD card, so I doubt that functionality was removed or altered for this hardware. Even if they aren't going to explicitly say it, I can say with a fair amount of certainty that you can add ROMs with the SD card slot.
@@DurradonXylles Until now, their Flashback consoles did NOT have SD card slots. After actually trying it, I can definitely say that as it comes out of the box, you can NOT play games from the SD card. Maybe atgames will release a firmware update to add it, but I wouldn't hold my breath. If you actually buy an Atari Flashback 9 and successfully load games from the SD card, be sure to let us know how you did it.
A lot of the games are either the 7600 or NES roms to look better. My guess is it has 5200, 7600, NES, and possibly the Master System and Mega Drive/Genesis emulators. None of them were the arcade roms. Also all the 'arcade' roms were on last year's model.
I have the AFB 4 and 5 and thought I was done but now I see this and think it this will be needed for my collection. John thanks for the great videos as always and this past week has been an exceptional week of product reviews. Keep up the great work sir.
I've been waiting AGES for news of this model! Great review, John - really hoping that SD reader will offer some nice, easy access to other classic 2600 games. And great to hear that Pitfall's been fixed!
I love The JH. Always clean and informative, something I can share with my son and not have to cover his ears. I’m 37, I have a pretty gnarly retro game collection, this is one of my most played RUclips channels.
Wow. So many retro units coming out. It's almost overwhelming. I've never been a big atgames fan, but this is one I might actually pick up (thanks to your review). Looking forward to the retrobit handheld. I'm sure you'll be doing a great review for it when it hits. Take care.
Please show more of the SD slot. I have lots of questions regarding that. Can you play game roms from it for instance? Do any homebrew games work on it, such as Space Rocks, Star Castle Arcade, Pacman 8k, Draconian, Scramble?
Yea, it's supposed to have the joystick ports in the rear of the console like the original 2600 and the SD card in the front. It still won't take cartridges though, that's not until FB 219
Pfffff yeah indeed i got tired & sick from all these atari flashbacks, but i guess it’s the mini console business craze wich causes these pooping effects amongst desperate company’s!!!
This is the best AtGames product I've seen yet. One touch I really like is the little tune playing on the main menu. It reminds me of the NES/SNES Classic in that regard. The SD card slot is also a HUGE addition. I do wish they'd stop including non-2600 versions of games on these systems, though. I guess the brightside is that you can always play the original 2600 versions using an SD card.
Hi John- First time seeing one of your videos. Thanks for the review! I've eyed these before, and this looks like a very nice version! I might have to pick this up somewhere down the line. Especially if they release one with paddles.
I have that exact same Atari shirt, John! I hope the SD card slot lets me add the games I grew up with! Cat Trap, Ms. Pac-Man, Moon Patrol, Kangaroo...
Dude last year's was like 70 this year's is 50 but no HDMI cable ? I'm sure everyone has multiple HDMI cables lying around not big deal I'll buy this for sure
The $70 unit last year was the Gold version. The unit John is reviewing is the base version, which was $52.99 last year for the Flashback 8, but only supported composite output. The cost is the same, the real difference is this one supports HDMI out at the $50 price point. A cable not being included isn't a big deal. It would probably add another $5 on the cost.
Instead of griping about a HDMI cable not being included, I would gripe more that it doesn't have paddle controllers or support older paddle controllers since many of the games require paddle controllers for proper playing. I would gripe more that some games are not original 2600 games and are updated arcade or homebrews. If you already don't have a few extra HDMI cables in your home by now, then you can simply go to the store and buy one. We don't have this simple option to deal with the paddle controller and game version issues.
As always, thanks John for the review and all you do. I've often wondered why AT Games never made a Flashback that played 7800 games as well as 2600.With an SD slot, you'd have access to some really great homebrews that were made for the 7800.I haven't pulled the trigger ona Flashback for a long while. For the price this looks cool, especially with Gyrus and those Activision games make it a great buy ( I don';t think they made a better game than HERO).
They FINALLY put an SD card slot in those Flashback consoles! That was the main reason I picked up one of those Super Retro-cade console's...it came with an SD card slot. I'll definitely be on the lookout for the Flashback-9. I dig those classic 2600 games too, Semper Fi!
Great review! It convinced me to subscribe to your channel. I think one of the drawbacks to the AF series is the amount of clutter buyers will eventually end up with if they keep buying these mini consoles. Boxes get thrown out after a while, people forget which games are on which console, etc. I think the series would be much more successful if they simply sold one unit which has the SD card slot and then released new SD cards with new assortments of games (including the homebrews that have popped up in recent years). Anyway, thanks for sharing the review!
Thank you for this sneak peek! The inclusion of an SD card slot offers some promise... especially if it can be used to add ROMs to. With all of these systems, there's always a handful of personal favorites that are never included. (For me, Omega Race and Fantastic Voyage would be two). :) I'm curious to see if this flashback system supports the customer Indy 500 controller and the Omega Race joystick add-on.
The driving controllers for Indy 500 should work without issue since it seems original joysticks work. The driving controllers just use the joystick up and joystick down inputs to control turning and the button is connected to the regular fire button input.
I missed out on getting the Atari Flashback 9 when it was available, but I am looking for it by the sources that sell previous years models of merchandise. I have been a fan of the entire Atari Flashback series of mini-consoles, especially on my new TV that has various different inputs.
The 9 GOLD comes with an HDMI cable. If you don't have a HDMI cable you probably still have a CRT and need a TV now too. LOL Thanks for the review man.
This one is the only one of the newly announced AT games plug and plays that may be worth getting. They do Atari well. Assuming that you can actually side load play atari roms via sd card, that would be worth it. I already have 2 different versions of the flasback 8, but would replace both of them with this new one if it can side load all the atari roms. It would be nice if you could actually test out what that sd card slot is capable of doing, John.
Hey, John! Have you tried that new switch exclusive marble it up? It evokes feelings of super monkey ball and seems like a great pick up and put down kind of game. I'm very interested in your opinion on it and if you think it's worth its price tag.
I only bought the Atari Flashback 2 and still have it complete in box. Reason being because it's the only model that used Atari hardware, and it can be easily modded to play cartridges. No... I didn't mod mine.
Thanks for the great review. I really hope we'll be able to add ROMs of old games, via an SD card. Personally, I like that they haven't included an HDMI cable. It keeps the price down. A lot of people will already have a spare HDMI cable (including myself). It also means we can use a decent cable instead of them adding a low quality cheapo one.
I agree that not including the plugs with a plug and play device is stupid. But thanks to awesome people like you i can buy an el cheapo hdmi when or before i pick this up. Keep up the great work, and please keep us informes on the sd card functions on these new atgames machines.
Love ya John, but most people have an extra HDMI and dont want to pay for yet another extra. Probably why its not included. I feel its the right choice?
I have 10 hdmi cables. I can live with it not bring included. What's up with wired controllers lol. I've been holding off buying a flashback. Last years weird UI and hdmi on the side was a turn off. Looks like I'd buy it now if it had wireless controllers that worked well. Will Atgames ever get it right?
I tested the Atari rom set on this device and it works exactly like the Flashback Portable. Only a handful of Homebrews work, again slow in gameplay and have not tried using paddles or keypads yes due to not having them. Raiders of the lost ark works but some games that require 2 joysticks to play, the sticks are reversed right stick is player not the other way round. For 40 bucks it's your choice. You get what you pay for.
John, What can you recommend for this: I Want a game console with large joystick and buttons (sturdy) instead of using the joystick that comes with the atari 9. Do they make a console? kinda like a pandoras box console? I love your channel and look forward to your recommendation.
Such a shame that the original Space Invaders is not in these Flashback consoles... I mean, they went to Taito to get the licensing for the "arcade" verson that's included here, but so was the original Atari published version. I can totally understand Frogger, due to the fact that it was originally published by Parkert Bros., not to mention the Music issue. The Original Atari Space Invaders still hits me in that Nostalgia spot.
It looks a great console, the ports in front of the console look like the same in sega genesis (mega-drive) have you ever tried to plug genesis controllers on atari flashback 9 just to see if it works? In the game arkanoid or some variation of it you told it was difficult to control with the original controller and another question: does it come with pinball? The input for micro sd is a good option for the players.
I just got one this morning. Identical box but there's no HDMI port on it and the user interface is totally different. It came with non-removable AV cables and the picture is garbage with them.
Its $50 Canadian at Walmart for the gold one. Might get it. On the box it say 120 games. Probably only play a dozen that ,I like. But it's cool to play some of the stuff that you never played before.
Hey I preordered the Flashback 9 Gold from Gamestop, can you tell me anything about the Gold edition? I collect these things and I got the Atari Flashback 8 Gold Activision Edition last year still unopened on my shelf. I keep saying I'm gonna open it, but I don't.
What’s up with the audio? Frogger had sound but the first 2 games you played did not. At least I couldn’t hear it. I bought a little AtGames system at Walmart and returned it because it did not have sound either. Is something wrong with this system too?
TWO questions, before I buy: 1. Will it work with all titles (including homebrews) from a loaded SD card (over a few hundred games including Pac-Man 4K, Space Rocks, Tempest, etc.) and 2. Why no normal (composite) video/audio cable or even a jack, why HDMI only??? Not all of us use a newer TV or even use HDMI jacks for classic gaming, what if we want to "go retro" and use a CRT TV with composite a/v jacks??? If that's the case I'll just get an older Flashback Portable Deluxe and use it instead
Idk about the HDMI cable matter, do I run into them so often in thrift stores because they are included with too many devices or will I stop running into these common cables because they stop putting them in the boxes? Why are some second hand cables brand new and unused? O_o??? The SD slot is most welcome, glad they got over that issue because it stops nothing bad but definitely stops everything good that can be done with SD cards. Also happy to hear some Paddle news, always been a sour point for me with P&P units. I think it's just silly the 2600 versions aren't there for you to switch to.
Just picked up a 6' HDMI cable at Walmart for $7 (Omni). Very cheap and works great. I love this emulator for the 2600. Got the Flashback 9 for $39.99 at Walmart. Very reasonable!
My girls just received this as an early xmas gift. Funny thing is it does not have an HDMI, yellow and white plugs only, interface is different and both controllers have all the buttons and the manual is a booklet. I had to double check, but it's the same box, flashback 9, 110 games. Are they different for selling regions?
Just want to do an update and state that the sound works great...just that my capture card was having issues recording it in the games.
I thought you excluded the music and sound effects to prevent a copyright strike. Lol.
A 7800 version with cart slots for 2600 games and sd card and hdmi would be nice ...does AT games make these good they can keep atari stuff cuz Sega fired them thanks fully or genesismini
Great video, just wondering if ice hockey by Activision is on it? Thanks.
What size sd card to use
Hello john....does it contain the legendary boxing game with the black and white boxer??????
Great review!!! This Atari might have just shot to the top of my Christmas list and is way better than that other Atari pre-order fiasco.
Oh dude. If that sd card slot does what we hope it does, this could be the ultimate Atari flashback.
Hmmm. Im not a big atGames fan but this unit does seem like they took care of some of the criticisms from lasts years versions.
Its a shame they didn't put much care in to the Sega consoles they done :( .
You're right Ron, I hope you will review it and share it with our facebook community group in the near future
Sega is more complex, I use a PC to emulate the SEGA games.
Why does everyone hate atgames? I love sega classic :(
@@TheRetroScene And that is why they no longer get to make Sega consoles.

This thing sold out everywhere . Just preorder the Flashback 9 HD from GameStop.

Thank you. Game hopefully going out this next week. Got slammed with reviews.
John Hancock understandable. Eager as can be. Thanks for letting me know.
Another great video John! Is there any Imagic games on the unit?
Nice video Does the Atari flash back 9 have pac man and the pin ball game midnight magic?
That version of Frogger IS the arcade version.
Hope that SD slot allows to play roms like the portable! Then I am sold :-D
The portable was a great product.
ya! wonders if there will be a 3rd release?!
Yes
Time to tinker and ulock that SD Card Slot!!!! bwah ha ha ha ha haaaaaaa Great vid John!!!!!

Are instructions included on screen for each game? I don't remember how to play all of those games, lol
did you buy all those mini consoles wow
Is the pingpong game still there? That was my favorite one to play.
In the instruction sheet: when you open it up and look at the bottom left side, it says HDMI included.
Did I hear you say Megamania? If so it's getting bought. My favorite Atari 2600 game next to Demon Attack and Journey Escape.
Love ya John, but most people have an extra HDMI and dont want to pay for yet another extra. Probably why its not included. I feel its the right choice?
No Vanguard?

What’s up with the audio? Frogger had sound but the first 2 games you played did not. At least I couldn’t hear it. I bought a little AtGames system at Walmart and returned it because it did not have sound either. Is something wrong with this system too?
TWO questions, before I buy:
1. Will it work with all titles (including homebrews) from a loaded SD card (over a few hundred games including Pac-Man 4K, Space Rocks, Tempest, etc.)
and
Are you able to play games like Kaboom if you do not have the Atari paddles? Do they even sell the paddles for the Flashback 9?
John, my greatest pleasure at playing is called HERO.
I keep wanting to pick up the 8 Gold Deluxe. Would you recommend this version over the 8?
I have too many HDMI cables
Idk about the HDMI cable matter, do I run into them so often in thrift stores because they are included with too many devices or will I stop running into these common cables because they stop putting them in the boxes? Why are some second hand cables brand new and unused? O_o???
The SD slot is most welcome, glad they got over that issue because it stops nothing bad but definitely stops everything good that can be done with SD cards. Also happy to hear some Paddle news, always been a sour point for me with P&P units. I think it's just silly the 2600 versions aren't there for you to switch to.
Do u have a list of the games sir?
Looks like the SD slot is only for game states? Can you load actual ROMs on it? We need confirmation.
Did the flashback 9 really came out??? I bought the flashback 8 like 3 weeks ago...
Looks like an awesome version.
Just picked up a 6' HDMI cable at Walmart for $7 (Omni). Very cheap and works great. I love this emulator for the 2600. Got the Flashback 9 for $39.99 at Walmart. Very reasonable!
Love the hat, John!
Do the controllers work on the OG Atari?
When does this release in Europe?
Quick question. When I turn my unit on I don't get the menu. Don't have to have an SD card installed or is there something I need to upgrade.
You can find the HDMI version at Walmart.
I have Pooyan for the 2600 (the real cart). What is interesting about it was that it was the only game Konami released themselves for the system.
just wonder if you could download other emulator's to play other libraries of older systems on it would be cool.
