I do feel like I was in the minority of people who always liked Hope even in the first game………people tend to forget that he was thrusted out of his normal familial life in a matter of days. Not everything he did was right but I definitely enjoy his growth throughout the 3 games
My take: Hope Estheim - first of his name, hero of our age, savior of mankind, ruler of the free people of nova chrysalia, absolutely fucking ATE with that outfit upgrade in XIII-2, master of the universe, actual puppet of god, probably a better candidate for best boy than most of your problematic faves, rightful heir to the iron throne... I CAN keep going actually...
Never understood the hate he got like what did people expect from a 14 year old in that situation? I really dislike when people say XIII characters have no personality or character development, you can clearly see they did get past the beginning and just jumped into the hate wagon just for the sake of it.
@@wanderingbardgaming Will you consider making a video about Serah, Noel, Yuel and Caius? Really like your XIII analysis videos not many do those regarding XIII.
@@Zero-fx8pc so the main reasons I hadn't done so already were because FFXVI came out, plus I needed better FFXIII-2 footage. I'm very close o being ready to start doing XIII-2 vids; still have XVI-related projects to do, so won't happen immediately, but the goal is to start XIII-2 analyses sometime this year.
@@Zero-fx8pcI was just saying in the Vanille video XIIIs story is pretty on point if you pay attention. If I had one gripe I wish the l'cie and f'alcie parts of the lore didn't get benched for time travel
@@Zero-fx8pc people's hatred for Hope is nothing short of hypocrisy. They don't hate him because he's "whiny", they hate him because he's not a badass they can live vicariously though, or a cute animr girl they can't make their waifu. Believe me, if Hope was a badass or a cut girl, their opinions on Hope would be RADICALLY different. Some people are just superficial.
People who hate Hope are so unserious and probably forget he is a kid. Of 13's main cast, he is the youngest at 14in the original game, and had so much shit happening to him in such a short amount of time that it's no wonder he reacts the way he does. Hope Estheim and Ken Amada from Persona 3 are very similar characters who had very similar characters arcs, if you ask me. Surprise surprise, the majority opinion is to hate on these children who don't know how to deal with grief. But overall, I think Hope's journey works better than Ken's for me because we get to see that journey in its entirety on screen while Ken wasn't as lucky. I love Hope, he's one of my favourite characters and probably my favourite from 13.
@@wanderingbardgaming he does mature! I think me personally i didnt connect as strongly with him as i did with hope because Ken joins the party after the first third of the game and I think its that disconnect what gets me. Hope was there from the beginning and we can see its beginning middle and end, Ken... not so much, but he gets the same "he's annoying" comments when the boy is arguably younger than Hope and had as much shit happen to him
You wanna know something funny? I'm one of this game's most outspoken haters, but even I consider Hope's growth arc THE supreme redeeming feature of the game. I unironically loved it and it did actually keep me invested. It's up there with FFX's laughing scene as one of those things I knew I understood better than the game's _own fans,_ and makes me think the game's fans aren't very smart for not getting it.
It is sad for sure. I've gotten a lot of comments from people complaining how most people don't take the time to understand characters. Which is especially sad since I think most of the writing is so good. I am glad that, in spite of not liking XIII, you still found things about it you did appreciate.
@@wanderingbardgaming Hope reminded me of Edward, another favourite FF character of mine, especially with what they gave him in the sequel (which I only watched somebody else play, but still.)
Thanks for this great analysis. With the topic of his fear and emotions as a theme, it gave me a whole new appreciation for Hope. Hope is still my favorite character in all of FF13. I was around Hopes age when I first played the game. I felt alot of his struggles and fears as a teenager whos life wasn't the easiest without going into much detail on that. I still struggle with my emotions and to come to termes with the deeply rooted pain within me. And with everytime I play FF13 I gain new respect for him and look up to him. He, for me personally, gives me hope. My sickness often leaves me hopeless and weak and I feel like I can't fight back anymore but... characters like Hope remind me that I can. That I can reach out to my friends and family, even if the relationship is rough at times. That it isn't impossible to stand up again and that there is a great strength within me too, even if problems seem much bigger than me. And moreover, my emotions are not what makes me weak, not accepting them is. Hope will for me be always one of FF13s better aspects. His arc is just so good and he means so much for me. Thanks again for this wonderful video and I hope you have a good day/night. :D
I definitely understand still struggling with emotions/pain; it's a struggle in my life too. I'm really, really glad this video could be meaningful in that way. I also love, now that you mention it, both Lightning and Hope struggled with accepting their emotions, snd they're the two who formed the closest bond. They brought out the best in each other
Ive loved him since I played the game. He’s a little baby, how dare people expect him to be a grown ass man. The story and all he had to go thru, helped him mature, and made him such an amazing character. People get too hung up on a character people accurately portrayed, as an annoying baby child, and miss their entire existence. Its an entitled way of looking at things imo
Hope Estheim is a well written character. His actions and thoughts are perfectly portrayed of that of a *child*. Seeing him grow and mature especially under Lightning’s care was amazing. Your analysis was well done. I really hope people can see how Hope was greatly written.
He was always my favourite character and my lead of choice for the first playthrough because he felt most relatable to me. His weapon of choice and his way of using it didn't hurt either.
@@wanderingbardgaming I wouldn't judge the effectiveness of a lead just based upon HP pool though. I would say that's a minor factor. Syn and Medic optimization through manual inputs would be reasons for choosing Hope as lead, as well as his generally great last resort for single target fights.
When You Think About The Main Cast, And Their Names, It Makes You Think, Like There Is A Theme Here. XIII Is Like The Modern Version of IX. Go Back, Look At The Messages That Come Up For Every Character. When I Look At Them Each Character Represents A Trait, An Aspect That Is Possibly Missing In The World. That Same Thing, At Least To Me Is Represented In Each Character Here, An Inward Journey, Soon To Be Expelled Into Great Acts of Bravery, Honour, Reliability, Unwavering Spirit In The Face of Great Odds. These Games Are Wonderful, And Contain A Lot of Life Lessons, And Great Emotional Relatability. Edit: Hope Really Lived Up To His Name.
I always liked Hope. But what i really enjoyed seeing is how over the course of XIII, he developed from a false hope to genuine hope. At first, he held onto the hope that confronting and taking revenge on Snow would somehow help him feel better or process his grief, and that revenge is leading him down a dark path towards only deeper despair. But then at the end, when the whole party is together, they all contribute something in the group dynamic. And Hope? He becomes the party’s heart. He becomes the hope he was named after, just as Lightning says. He’s the one that inspires the party to fight against their fates, almost every time when their path seems muddled or impossible. It’s fantastic writing.
