Hello! I'm SORRY ABOUT THE BACKGROUND MUSIC in this video! Here it is without it: ruclips.net/video/p0HcG8HrWCE/видео.html Thank you for speaking up and letting me know! I won't make that mistake again! Jeff
I’m having trouble with understanding the difference between the head voice and falsetto. In order to not strain on high notes, I have to flip into falsetto. The the head voice below or above the flip?
As someone who has recently found a love for singing at 23, your videos have been a godsend! I find myself singing everywhere with confidence thanks to your tutorials!!
Wondered about the background music! Thanks for the link. I'm 84 and have performed a lot as a jazz vocalist in N.Y. after age 59, doing 2 well-produced albums over the next decade. Stopped singing for 5 years (not the 1st time) then did 4 gigs with a guitarist before the lockdown. We're doing our 1st return appearance next month and I was panicking about my voice until a friend suggested your warm-ups. They're magical. I've never brought my voice along (not my strong suit) so fast and am even learning new stuff that is making me more confident. I thank you so much.
When I first heard the music, I thought, "Cool! How fun!" Ultimately though, it's just a matter of taste. Jeff, it's your content and teaching style that make your videos so great. What I really like is that you're always trying to find new ways to add to your videos, trying out new ways of doing things. You do so much for all of us that I hope you do exactly whatever you want to do to keep things interesting for you, to keep exploring in new ways. A teacher who does that is a teacher who will always up his game! Thanks for the video, as always!
this is so wild that you uploaded this video because it has been an issue for me for some time! I just started vocal lessons about three weeks ago and it is something we are working on. it's like my larynx has a knee-jerk reaction to tighten up when i get to a middle c or d (although it has been improving with practice) so i am glad to see this video, it will help me on my journey!!
Thank you, David! I hear that very frequently in my teaching, and felt like it deserved some attention! Thank you for noticing and mentioning it! All the best! Jeff
After all these years, your explanation and demonstration of difference between head voice (closed vocal folds) and falsetto (open vocal folds) finally cleared it up for me! Thank you so much! Big help!
Your vocal exercises are incredibly helpful! I have been able to overcome a vocal issue and advance through your expertise & videos. Thank you so much! 🙏
you’re an amazing teacher! thank you so much for sharing your vocal knowledge. this video has helped me gain such a great understanding of vocal dynamics & control that i didn’t realize i lacked!!
Hello dear Jeff, this is right up my street! I love theory (mostly that in this video!) as much as I love singing. I always include sirens in my warm ups, but I have never heard the rudiments of them explained before as you have here. I can tell you have a passion for theory and explanations as much as singing/performing. This is so useful - thank you in abundance!
This puts a lot together. I noticed all of the lessons I’ve been working on the last two weeks since I joined really show through. I sound a lot smoother up in the higher range
Discovered your channel when my choir went virtual for the pandemic and your vids have been such a helpful and expansive addition to my daily singing exercises and help me practice so much easier. Thank you for continuing to upload!
See how publishing and constantly teaching on RUclips and listening to comments has made you a better teacher! Your getting better at teaching/production every time Jeff!
Super helpful. I love your teaching. I just tried this and it did work. My note seems calm and super less strain in hitting the high notes. Thank you so much. You're an amazing coach.
thank you so much jeff rolka, i've gotten super into singing since my friend showed me the singing app called smule, and the more i've been singing i keep "accidentally" hitting high notes, when i never even thought it was possible for me to do that. i'm here because now i know i can do it but i want to be careful about it! 🤗🤗
I'm sorry about that. I was just trying something out. I don't think I can get rid of it for this video, but I'll leave it out in the future. Best, Jeff
@@JeffRolka I really appreciate that, thank you. I suspected you were likely trying something new, but suffice it to say you are good enough as you are!!
Upon trying it again this morning, im running back into an old problem that I have been working for the past year to resolve - and that is when trying to engaged across the different areas of my voice, it gets into my throat and starts causing discomfort. The warm down and limited range exercises seemed to fix it. But as soon as I start working across the break im having problems again.
Fantastic, Jeff. Your pedagogy skills are ever elevating. Not to be pugnacious, but I have to concur with a commenter here. The background music is, well, unnecessary and detracts from the true content. But hey, experimenting is where it's at. Regardless, keep up the fine work! (and where is the Tardis?!) =) )
Thank you! Thank you for reminding me of the Tardis, I'll dust it off and wire it up! As for the music, no more. Sorry about that. I have to admit that part of it is that after using Reaper for almost a decade, I'm trying out Logic and wanting to try as many things as I can before my trial period is up. It was an opportunity to experiment a bit with both music in the video as well as fast and light production in Logic. Thank you! Jeff
Dear Jeff, I love your videos, this one included. But I am begging of you to please DO NOT start adding background music to your videos. I am afflicted with chronic vestibular migraine disease, so among many symptoms, noise sensitivity and lack of concentration are real problems for me. Not to mention being 62 yrs old, lol! I want to be able to concentrate to the best of my ability on your great instruction only, not any distractions. Please give this serious consideration and thanks SO much for all you do! You rock!
Thank you! I'm sorry about that. It was an experiment and you're not the only one who didn't like it! Thank you for being kind hearted about it! All the best, Jeff
Love your lessons, thanks again for some great guidance! Could you do a video on strengthening the diafragm? I feel that my voice is not as strong and projecting as it could be, but i can't seem to stabilise it enough... should I do more long tones?
Hi Jeff; I follow your channel and I really enjoy your videos on the "break"; I have a question: while rehearsing on this topic, I feel my passaggio zone gets better if I maintain the same resonance all the time (for me, adding a bit of nasal resonance helps me to better blend the chest with the head). Can I actually say that "keeping a constant resonance helps to blend the register especially in the break zone?" Thank you!
Sure. If that is what is helping you balance out the registers that's totally fine. The physical memory is easier to remember and reproduce. If you're teaching singing, however, I would frame it as, 'I experience it this way...' as opposed to telling your client what it feels like. Yes, teachers do that sort of thing all the time, but physical experience is relative. What it feels like to you, may not feel the same to another, even though both of you are producing tone equally. Great question! I may cover this in a 'Questions from Comments' segment. Thank you for watching! Jeff
I'm struggling with accessing my secondo di passagio. Everytime I reach the upper limit of my mixed voice my voice sharply breaks into a falsetto From what I understand with the help of your other videos I belive I am classically a lyric baritone. I need help if I'm ever going to sing lead or tenor in a men's quartet.
Work on the transition from the top down only. In other words, start with exercises that begin above the secondo passaggio and descend. Initial practices will be wider intervals. If you haven't yet tried this, you could begin here: ruclips.net/video/erFjTGWia5U/видео.html
If you feel some sense of release around the vocal folds, it's worth exploring more, especially how much pulsing is taking place and what amount of disengagement is occurring between pulses. Good appoggio has a minimal amount of what one might think of as 'pulsing.' I hope that helps! Jeff
Great video on a topic I find very essential indeed, but the background music makes it really hard to concentrate. Especially when English is not your native language. Maybe you could release one with the same content, but without the music ?

Stepping up your game with background music, and a fun thumbnail! Nice
I’m not sure I like to background music tbh. It’s very calming when it’s just his voice IMO
@@Ashen4 Yea I agree, I ended up commenting at the beginning thinking the music would only last for the introduction 😂
Thanks @Ashen and @Benji Crane! I can ditch it next time I do something like that! Thank you!

Thought the caution about slipping into falsetto instead of head voice during siren exercises particularly valuable in this excellent video.
