My first experience with troop building was visiting a friend of a friend's house as a kid in the 80s. We walked down into a few stairs into a room with a pool table. The pool table was covered with Star Wars figures setup recreating The Emperor's arrival on the Imperial Shuttle. As a kid, I didn't get it since toys were for playing, but I definitely get the appeal now though I still haven't gone down that path. The toy market makes it tough these days since you essentially have to go in wanting to troop build or being willing to pay a markup after the troop builder figure is discontinued like the Cobra Trooper which now goes for 60+ or being willing to settle for alternatives.
Sad I missed those Shock Troopers though since they were the first thing I looked up and have started eying the 25th anniversary line, among others.

Here we are, army builder's anonymous!! Lol. Definitely a big troop builder. Star Wars the Vintage Collection & 25th to 50th Joes got me good!! Those lines are just so expansive & have so many troop types. Of course, the main ones for each of those franchises are the POC, 30th & 50th Cobra Vipers. Then the TVC, Saga Legends & Legacy collection Storm Trooper. Although, I think I only have one platoon of Vipers, at most, but have a company of Stormies!
My biggest Joe troop builders are
Cobra Troopers, from 25th, 30th, POC, Resolute, Renegades, 50th & Retros. I do 8-man squads & probably have 6 squads between all those lines.
Cobra Vipers, from 25th, POC, 30th & 50th. Probably 4 squads altogether. Although I can't stand the 25th one. I have a Hall of Heroes Viper. A pro, is he actually has a chrome face plate. I have another one from a battle pack, who also has a chrome face. Then I have the 2 of the Python Vipers that came with the Python Conquest. I'm disappointed they never did a 30th style version of the Python Viper.
Crimson Guard, from 25th & Retaliation, also Shadow Guards, from the 50th. Yes! I bought 8 of those Gung-Ho & Shadow Guard 2-packs!! Lol
Snow Serpents, from 25th & POC. Probably 3 squads, one comprised of the TRU exclusive repaint.
Alley Viper, from POC & Retaliation. Probably 2 squads of each type. Also, have an Orange & Blue "Defense of Cobra Island 7-pack" & 2 of the Officers, from the Cobra Fury.
Strato-Vipers, from 25th. At least 2 dozen or so.
    Eels, from 25th & 50th. Probably 3 squads.
    Iron Grenadiers, from 25th, POC, 30th & 50th. At least 1 platoon.
Then, only 1 squad of the other Viper types. Too many to list everything. Not to mention the several different pilots & drivers. Except for the really hard & pricier to obtain, such as "the Defense of Cobra Island" Range Viper & the green one that came with the twin battle gun. Also, that driver that came with the Rise of Cobra Hummer H3. Which is basically a modern Motor Viper. I only have 1 of. .... ..
I also army build vehicles! Small, medium, large vehicles!
On a final note, went on a toy run last weekend & picked up a loose 50th Viper for $14.99! I was very happy!!

Been collecting Joe since ‘82, but started troop building with JvC. Cobra Troopers are my baseline (as the “cannon fodder”). I have about a dozen of those and I scale down roughly from there. 10 Vipers. 8 BATs and alternate factions (Night Creepers, Iron Grenadiers), 6 specialist troops (Tele-Viper, CGs, Techno-Vipers, Range Vipers, etc). 4 redeco troopers (Python Patrol, Crimson whatevers), 2 officers or “specialist” BATs.

Yeah I went down that rabbit hole with the 25th Ann - Modern error line. I have over 800+ figures from this time. If I saw it in the store, it came home with me. I started doing it with the Classified line, but when the figures went up to $25 each, I had to rain that number in a little.

When I first got into classified, I had never heard of army building. We never heard of it as kids. We only ever had one of every guy. Army building in classified pissed me off. I couldn't get a whichever figure because ppl were buying every one of them army building. Stores here don't carry twenty of each generic trooper

Those POC G.I Joe Shock Troopers are absolute beast!
I hope Hasbro makes them exactly like this in 6in scale and don't change anything.
    Shadowtracker was dissapointing.
But if they do those heavy iron grenadier units, jungle BATS....it be nice..
But yes this Shock Trooper is easily my top 10 fav of all!!

Definitely an army builder. My absolute favorite are the 1/6 Imperial Stormtroopers and Classified (regular) Cobra troopers. If the Black Series Rogue One Stormtroopers came in a single pack, I'd probably army build those...so I guess it's great that they don't lol

I get three of every trooper in general. Exceptions are the most basic of troopers: basic B.A.T.s, basic Vipers and Cobra troopers which I have more of. Another exception are H.I.S.S. drivers, gunners and Tacticians which I have only two of. Those last ones I would like to have at least another one of each but, you know, money doesn't grow on trees.

I generally just get 2 troop figures so they can stand on either side of a single character and appear symmetrical. I've only been getting 1 retro card trooper though, their variant look makes them a single to go in-between the pairs

I'm typically a one and done collector. I have a few extras in both my vintage collection and my Classified collection, but that's just because I found them at heavy discount. I've just always preferred buying a new figure, than buying the same thing over and over. I don't do dioramas or photography though. If I did, I'm sure I'd troop build. I also keep a fairly strict budget, so buying something I already have isn't as appealing to me. And, yes. I open everything. I'm that guy that would open the rarest toy on Earth. If I buy it, I want to be able to enjoy it. I don't enjoy staring through plastic windows.

I too open everything. And troop building isn't necessarily having 2 or more of the same. Plenty of troop builders come with more than just the basic of weapons. Especially the 6 inch line of GI joe. For instance the first 2 troop builders, the trooper and the infantry both came with the standard blaster a knife and 2 pistols. The trooper also had goggles and a sniper rifle, as well as a shoulder patch. Also the helm comes off. So you can have each loaded out or wielding a different combination of weapons. That is also the essentials for squad or platoon building. Which is mostly what most collectors do. They do not actually army build.
Army building as in army building is more of a lego star wars thing. Where you got like a 1000 of the same fig standing in line. Looking like a solid army. To get that look you'd need endless budget. since a fig costs you 30 euros minimum. Building a propper squad you actually need 8 minimum. Most of us just cheat and make it 5 or something. Put them all together as 1 unit. It looks great.
And then have them face a number of named Joe characters. Or just have the squad itself on display. Nothing is set in stone obviously. And if you really collect single figures that is totally fine. As a kid I also had only 1 night creeper and 1 viper. My best friend had a BAT. It is how we played with just the 1 fig of each. And if you do not like having the same set of items multiple times I get that too.

The basic troopers though. You got to have more than just 2 or even 3. I also hate Hasbro for their earlier fiasco on stock for the infantry and trooper. That was madness. I suspect many got like 20 in the box. While most of us had to work hard to get just a few of them.

I got 3 deluxe snowtroopers + 2 arct bats. 2 regular vipers and the pack, making 4+officer. I got 4 regular infantry 1 cobra island trooper and an officer, my cobra island trooper is like the sergeant. 2 python + a officer python, and a python bat. 2 regular bats. 2 alley troopers, 2 crimson guards , 2 of the valkry packs. 2 of the steel core packs. 1 of the hiss tank set, 2 trouble bubbles 2 ferrets. 2 techno vipers, 2 range vipers. 3 cobra eels.
5 retro troopers on the way, as well as 2 night creepers.
Then I got 2 of the blue ninja pack, 3 red ninjas and 2 of the python patrol vypra.
What I really really like I get 5 or like 4 + officer. What I kinda like 3. Or 2 of the pack. If it is a multi pack. And 2 of every trooper other than that. I still intend to get another crimson guard. And perhaps increase my valks. But I also need to think of shelf space. Can´t have the whole house full of figures. And I also have a big TF collection. Which I do not wish to store away.
