I'm glad I watched this. Some people are saying this pattern is downy mildew. I had my soap spray in the garden this morning - use it directly on cucumber beetles as it's the only way I've kept them under control this year - anyway......found a leaf hopper and gave it a squirt this morning too. Hope he's a gonner!!!! Gonna' go mix up my peppermint oil spray now! Thank you, Gary!!!

Ya know - this is so great. Those leafhoppers are eating between the leaf veins, creating an angular appearance. Many folks go straight too Mosaic virus - and then panic. Sometimes, it's just a pest and, with the right techniques, is totally manageable.
Omgoodness…I have so many of these on my flowers. Oddly, I thought they were harmless until earlier in the season when I suspected they were causing problems. I’ve never seen spider mites, but suspected them possibly, too. I have hand squished so many cucumber beetles and squash bugs. I’d go out early on with my head lamp just after dusk. It was nuts! I wasn’t able to save the squash plants…I did harvest two fruits though. Still not sure if it may have also been vine borers that got to them. Cukes, I had to stay on top of the bugs, but did get some harvesting in before/as they’re dropping like flies. I have some germinated to pop in their place…but, now I’m seeing some nymphs. 🤦♀️ some years seem so much worse than others, but I feel if I don’t start taking strong measures, I’ll forever have a fight on my hands and no worthwhile harvest. Do you happen to deal with the type of stink bug that causes internal damage for tomatoes? Harlequin bugs have moved in on the lacinato kale. Thinking I’d shorten it (in hopes it would re-sprought for fall) spray and net. The long spring and late onset of cabbage moth was really nice. -On my patch of curly kales, I wish I would have just dug it up and planted beans and then seeded another round indoors, to set out once the beans finished. I guess I’m realizing it may not be wise to attempt keeping kale growing through the summer. It does bounce back string after cutting it back, though. Lol, too many options can leave my head spinning 😅 but makes gardening a challenge that we love!!
Leaf hoppers are pretty voracious eaters. Soapy water can kill stink bugs buts its tough not making it to strong so it doesnt damage leaves. Take notes of what the pest show up and start spraying 2 weeks early next year. That really helps. Enjoy learning from you! Curious, did you not use your recommended spray mixture enough on your first cucumber plant? Looks like they were really attacked.

Good morning Gary. I went out one day to find Mexican bean beetle had done alot of damage on mine. I'll be pulling the vines but should I do anything to the soil? My research said they can overwinter in soil.
What's hard is they over winter in and around and do fly in. SO you really cant do anything to fix the soil in any effective way. But note the date they showed and start spraying about 2 weeks early. That is the best way to prevent future problem. But you can direct seed a lot right now. Visit my blog, The Rusted Garden Journal for more information and other garden articles: therustedgarden.blogspot.com/2023/07/how-to-make-mason-jar-herb-garlic-olive.html
I am going to start doing that. Visit my blog, The Rusted Garden Journal for more information and other garden articles: therustedgarden.blogspot.com/2023/07/how-to-make-mason-jar-herb-garlic-olive.html
To be honest, probably leave them in the path. They dry and crunch away. But I try to get them to compost. Visit my blog, The Rusted Garden Journal for more information and other garden articles: therustedgarden.blogspot.com/2023/07/how-to-make-mason-jar-herb-garlic-olive.html
I got a late start with cucumbers(early June), and the plants are getting tall...with lots of MALE flowers...hardly any fruit. What causes this. I have fed regularly with a 5/10/10, Calcium/Mag, and amended the soil initially with leaf compost and fertilizer. They are in grow bags...so I have watered daily unless it rains a lot... Any thoughts?
I just pulled out a big zucchini plant and planted seeds to start over. It, too, was only producing male flowers, after producing only one zucchini, and three unpollinated. the leaves were yellowish too. I didn't want to deal with it anymore. so now I'm excited to see how the new one will do. I still have a good couple of months of warm weather in 8b.
Nope. Just keep up the watering up. It is in Natures hand. Visit my blog, The Rusted Garden Journal for more information and other garden articles: therustedgarden.blogspot.com/2023/07/how-to-make-mason-jar-herb-garlic-olive.html
