Meaning he was holding her back and in the end of that same episode, she was able to get down the driveway when Pacey was teaching her. Pacey says "now we're finally getting somewhere", meaning she's finally driving but also getting somewhere b with Pacey. In true love Joey says "I wanna stop staffing still, I wanna move forward" and takes off with Pacey. Driving and sailing are used as metaphors throughout season 3 to indicate Joey moving forward and Pacey being an outlet for her to do so. The writers didn't forget, it's intentional.

This was really cute and there was a lot of chemistry between them so when they stopped interacting completely in season 2 it kinda threw off them getting together in season 3. It's like the show had something really great bubbling underneath but then completely curbed it and tried to come back to it later but it didn't make much sense anymore.
I think the writers knew joey had better chemistry with pacey but joey/dawson was the endgame at that point so they probably kept them apart for that reason.
it's weird cause I really hated Dawson and Joey together, but whatever that was it gave pacey time to grow (with Andie) and then when they actually got together (which I really thought made SO MUCH sense cause they have so great chemistry) it was perfect
I think it makes sense. Him being with andie really helped him grow and mature bc in season one he was really immature and I don’t even wanna get into the whole teacher thing yk. So I think by the time he got to season 3 they were much more mature I think Joey knew she was falling out of love with Dawson. They were both fresh out of relationships and helped each other move on… it just happened to be with each other. It built a friendship they didn’t have and had actually needed
