I Have the same HMG pack and keep my tent (ZPacks Duplex) rolled up outside and on top of my pack. If its raining heavy I do not have to open my pack to get my tent out exposing it to rain. Set up tent, throw in pack and open it inside the tent to get out the rest of my gear. This just allows you to set up in a heavy rain if you have too without getting anything inside wet or damp. Additionally if your tent is wet the from the previous night it will not get the inside of your pack or any other gear wet.

I have the same pack to used on the AT! I absolutely love it! I pretty much pack it the way you do this one.
When I went on my first long distance hike last year I had no clue what I was doing but over the course of the two months I figured everything out, some things were moved to a new place others stayed put, it just takes time to figure out how you like your pack to be organised!

Thanks for sharing Dixie!! As someone getting into multi-day backpacking this year, one of the most confusing things to me has been pack organization. I've seen lots of the diagrams you showed, and they always seem to leave me with more questions than answers. It's nice to get a little insight into what works best for a more "seasoned" thru hiker. :)

i love using a pack liner they also can be used as a survival bag in emergencies! the one i have has a gear list as well which is nice even though i’ve done a ton of backpacking

Thanks for you opening commentary about the millions ways, and none of them the only, to pack your pack. A lot of new backpackers think they HAVE to have it one exact way of they are doing it wrong. It's all a personal decision based on what works for the individuals. I'm a "shove it all in" packer with a bit of organization on how I do it, and those commonly used items all have items on the outside of the main compartment.
My ZPacks ArcHaul finally arrived all the way from the USA today!!! So stoked with it, and looking forward to packing it up for my first mini thru-hike shortly!

I put all my waterproof stuff like my tarp, rain jacket, air bed folded flat next to the frame where your picture shows soft articles. Then I put my bag liner on top of that then fold my clothes flat inside the bag on top of my rain gear. Then I put my electronics on the bottom where that pic shows the sleeping bag then stuff my jacket with my quilt where the pic shows clothing, light, heavy items. I put my water filter in my cook pot in one of the water bottle pocket. Stove in the mesh, fuel next to my water bottle in the other pocket. I put the hip belt pockets on my shoulder straps then inside that I put my hats, gloves, neck gaiter. Food in a can on the top outside to save space inside. I'm just now finishing up piecing all my gear together. If I stuff my down into the included sacks I can free up half the space inside. I plan on making a few weekend/ section trips this season to test my setup. I have made most of my gear decisions from watching thru hiker videos like yours. I appreciate your valuable knowledge.

My flatmate and I have had many discussions about putting stuff in our packs. It was great to see what you do. After all the miles you've done, we figure you've ironed out any bugs in your system. Looking forward to the CDT. Not long now (for you, not us. ha). (Re possible posts. I'm interested in your tips for collecting the video assets for later edit. Your bloopers show your 'walk past' setups, and I found out recently that you shot your drone footage. So yup, that's what I'd like to see. I figure a lot of the people planning to do the epic through hikes will probably aim to record their adventure also, so it may be of interest to them also.) Stay safe.

Awesome advice, no right way! I have a front opening pack but still pack similar to you. chief advantage in order it's packed, shelter first to come out (personnel experience haha), food and/or snacks at top. Love the organizational procedure. Works for me anyway...Happy packing!

Thanks for sharing the video, I have an old fashioned 80 liter aluminum frame pack but never carry it I secured it to the top of my bike trailer for my touring-bike.
Your winterized footwear didn't look all that warm to me when I watched you moving in the rain and snow I hope you had a way of keeping your feet dry.

Your packing makes sense. I like the idea of getting the tarp for your tent out first and then your tent and then your sleeping bag and pad. Also brought up a very good idea of the toilet paper and wipes. Do you carry a bag to collect the wipes or do you bury them? Are they biodegradable? What types of food do you take with you on the trail?

i have had several back surgeries and the way i pack my backpack mostly depends on how im feeling. And that can change from day to day and change during the day.
Great video as always! When you carried the bear can on the top of your bag did you also keep food in it? Or just carry the food normally in your bag? And load up the canister each night with food to store. Thanks! Love your videos!

When do you start your CDT hike? I'm really looking forward to living vicariously through your CDT adventures. I remember reading 1000 Mile Summer by Colin Fletcher as a kid and always dreamed of hiking the PCT. Your videos allowed me to see the trail. I so much appreciate that you do this stuff.

I am wondering where did you put the extra water on the long dry sections, and how did you make sure it wouldn't spill in your pack?
Saw some 2 mil trash compactor bags 1:52 today at the store but it was a big roll. Reluctant to purchase the whole box but if I have to I will. Want my gear to stay dry. Liked & shared :-) Do you have a source to get just two or three compactor bags or do you have to buy a whole roll.
Cargo pant serve a dual purpose especially the zip to short ones. Lots of pockets to hold stuff you need to keep within arms reach and no digging in your pack!!

It sounds like you've got a good idea. I didn't see anything wrong with the way you had your pack packed. As a matter of fact I may be changing the way I pack mine. Thanks for the advice.
My old Kelty pack has 6 compartments 4 small ones on the sides a large one on the bottom and the largest on top, plus an area on the bottom where tent or sleeping bag went tied directly to the frame. In some ways it was easier to keep it organized. Because l learned how to backpack with such a pack l wouldn't use a big single compartment bag or even a double, the extra compartments were just too easy to access everything. For instance my stove and fuel went into its own compartment on the side, used gas stove back then.
jimmie montgomery That sounds nice! Easy to organize. Trade offs. More compartments, but a bit heavier. It’s all about finding what works best for you and what you’re comfortable with.
I have a Kelty as well! It does weigh a bit more, but I figure if I keep the weight of each item as low as possible it'll work. It has way more padding along the back and hip belt. It's comfortable on the long hikes for sure.
Would you recommend this method of packing for the AT thru hike?? That trail (as you well know lol) is much much wetter/damp/rainy than the PCT. Would you still just stuff the quilt in the liner? Do you have an AT specific "pack method" video? I do like this method - it makes a ton of sense to me.

It's great the way you started your video with the info and graphics you found while doing your research. Did you ever wish you had a slightly more durable pack on your thru-hike, rather than the lighter and easier to rip pack you carried. I know, from 2 years at March AFB CA, that those thorns in the desert can destroy your gear if you're not careful.
Do you have a recommendation for a one person tent…lightweight for the PCT?

Wait what do you have against compression sacks for a sleeping bag I mean it's tubular balled up but as small as possible with the straps and buckles. That as a big improvement for me back in the 90's over a regular stuff sack.

How do you carry your sunglasses when not wearing them, without breaking them? Also, did you have to dry camp and if so, how did you carry extra water for camping?
For me : last out (sleeping bag) is first in ! and vice and versa ! First I need : fli-flops... these are on top, etc. ! ;-)
I think that the tent should B on the outside of the backpack.
A: it's the first gear that U take out/use when U arrive on camp and the last one 2 pack when U leave the camp.
B: 4 quick access when U need a quick shelter/cave 2 hide from the rain or sun. Peace.

It doesn't matter how you pack your pack as long as the pack is well engineered. I like to take a sling pack and wear it backwards so it's on my front. Put the sling pack on first. That way you can have every little thing you want in the sling pack. I use a poncho so its attached to my sling pack so I can get to it fast. A poncho is awesome to have as you can go bathroom in privacy anywhere( ladies take notice).
