      Is chiropractic massage a quicker effect? I mean sometimes when you’re stopping over your breasts with rounded shoulders and a heavy spine, it seams a foot on the cervical bones with a forceful backwards pulling motion on the elbows & some kind of karate chopping on the back of the neck would make your eyes pop quicker from the vigorously boosted circulatory system?
      That sound of each one cracking back into place like an erected snake…

Botox helps but the real answer for me is surgery but surgeons won’t do it because I’m not in any pain, just discomfort…so I’m left with frequent Botox and massage. My SCMs are always sore and my pterygoids - I always need them firmly massaged and released. My masseters are nice and mobile with the Botox.

And the jaw joint area is so sensitive it’s a really bad flairup. Do you know anyone in FL that works on this that is reputable? I had to have one oral surgery situation and they thought maybe the disc in my jaw joint was out of place but it didn’t do anything to fix it. They are wanting to go in again and remove any bone pieces that could be causing clicking and such. I feel like I just need someone to do what you just did in this video. I can’t imagine how wonderful that patient must have felt after that.

What you might hear or read about our unique city in the media does not paint an accurate picture of life here. However, Portland has always been that beautiful mix of gritty and precious, and Portland never hides its problems behind closed doors. It's all out in the open here, in every way. So give us a little bit of a break and the benefit of the doubt. And thanks for watching, engaging, and for the compliments on my skills. From a person who proudly chose Portland as my home.

    • @DrRussInYourPocket
      @DrRussInYourPocket  Год назад

      That is the sound of joint surfaces that have lost their smoothness and have also lost some of their looseness and space. The medical term is "crepitus" and it is not harmful, but it is a sign that you could benefit from some work, either bodywork or self-care or both, to restore alignment and improve your upper body posture.

  • @Pfhorrest
    @Pfhorrest Год назад

    Doc, I'm curious if you have any thoughts on an issue I've long suffered with and have thought might have been TMD or trigeminal neuralgia but doesn't really seem to fit either quite right. It's a pain that usually starts out feeling like a tooth ache, and sometimes flossing/brushing/rinsing does actually help alleviate it, but I've had a dentist check out the area and there's no current tooth problems there.
    Anyway, it's easily ignored at that stage, but then it spreads gradually up past my temples up to the top and front of my head (all on the one side), as well as down my neck and shoulder and upper back, and sometimes (self-)adjusting my upper cervical or cervicothoracic areas can help alleviate it.
    Meanwhile my ear and sinuses on that side start to feel congested too, and sometimes blowing my nose, a hot shower, spicy food, or laying down in one position or another, can feel like it helps drain that out and alleviate the pain too.
    Toward the end of the process, usually after a long day of this gradually feeling worse, my bowels feel unwell too, and sometimes eating will make me feel nauseous, though throwing up then might make it feel better, or sometimes eating (probably varying by type of food) instead makes me need to poop, and a nice big poop makes me feel better. Even that, though, feels like it might just be biomechanically related to the lower lumbar or sacroiliac area.
    When its at it's worst, I'm completely incapacitated by it, and often such times, laying down and stretching and just zoning out from the world and letting my body move how it wants to is the only thing that really helps, feeling like it drains the sinuses, relaxes and repositions the joints in the neck/shoulder/back, and lets my bowels get moving; I'll often get up from that, take a nice big poop, blow my nose, and feel all better, either late at night or the next morning.
    This has been happening on and off for decades with varying frequency. At one point it was almost a regular occurrence every week, usually the first weekday, which lead to me nicknaming it "the Mondays" for lack of a better term.
    My current best hypothesis is that the cause begins with constipation (which is maybe why it used to be a Monday thing, after a weekend of eating bigger and stranger meals than my normal weekday diet), that then causes inflammation throughout my body, and a chronic upper cervical or TMJ dysfunction then blocks drainage through that one eustachian tube, causing pressure buildup in those sinuses on that one side of my head, and then referred pain down the neck, shoulder, and upper back.
    But I'm curious if you've ever heard of something quite like this and maybe know of a name for it.

      Oh and FWIW I have observed separate connections between all three of these things in myself: biomechanics, sinus congestion, and digestion.
      Sometimes after eating, or if a bad smell turns my stomach or something, I get very congested and end up coughing and clearing my throat a lot; and conversely often times if I fart or poop or just feel my bowels settling internally, suddenly I feel like I can breath so much more freely.
      Sometimes I feel sore or achy in various joints, often either around the pelvis or the shoulder girdle, and then I fart or poop or something and then all those joints feel relaxed and lubricated and able to adjust and move easily; or conversely, sometimes I'll adjust my neck or lower back or something and then suddenly feel my bowels settling and maybe need to fart or poop right afterward.
      And often if I'm congested and coughing or clearing my throat a lot, my neck and shoulders and upper back especially will start to feel tense and sore, or getting a nice big whiff of clean fresh air feels like it can allow my to relax all of that area and breath normally again; but conversely, sometimes all it takes it a nice neck or upper back crack and it's like my irritated airways reset and relax and all the congestion just flows away.
      It's often very hard to tell what's the cause and what's the symptom of these things for such reasons.

      Well this is quite a conundrum, and I appreciate you taking the time to write such a detailed history. It would be inappropriate for me to offer any specific advice or diagnosis, but based on your description, this would appear to be inflammatory in nature and related to some digestive function or food reactivity, which is unusual but plausible. In unusual cases such as this, all reasonable avenues of potential causation must be explored.

      Thanks for replying! Of course I don’t expect a proper diagnosis or advice, more just wondering if there were search terms for some condition(s) besides TMD and trigeminal neuralgia (which each seem similar to but different from this in their own ways) that I might try looking up for further reading of my own.

    You know, I've always had this doubt but what are the sort of situations where I can tell myself that I should visit a chiro and not a GP for an issue I might have. I'm just genuinely curious because I've wanted to visit a chiropractor when I get some time. Also if it's just for relaxation, then what advantages does a chiro have over a massage therapist?

    • @DrRussInYourPocket
      @DrRussInYourPocket  Год назад +5

      This is a great question! On one level, a chiropractor will be a better resource than an LMT because we have more tools and treatments at our disposal. I find that my sessions are more productive than a GP visit because I am practiced at touch and manual diagnosis...if you go to a GP you might get painkillers and you might get a PT referral. But the bottom line is that the relationship and the trust are more important than the degree. So find a provider that you feel safe with, who listens to you and cares about your well-being, and go with that. Be well, and thank you for the question!

      Hi, I would like to help you find what you need. Look for local chiros or massage therapists or PTs who specialize in myofascial release. Then ask if they do TMJ work, specifically intraoral (inside the mouth) and if this is something they do frequently. I do at least 3-4 of these a week. Best of luck. I'm in Portland OR if you are ever here, come see us.

    Botox into the massater muscles and temporalis muscles also helps a lot. Had terrible pain for years. I remember waiting on public transport for over an hour the it took over an hour to get home in the freezing cold. My jaw was in constant pain after that. And later on a lot of stress. By chance a Healthcare Assistant told me about the injections as she had the same thing. They help so much.

      I'm not aware of any studies that show that, however, we do know that chronic muscle tension anywhere in the body can impair local micro circulation and that might have an effect on hair follicles and hair growth.

      It probably won't surprise you to learn that I am not a proponent of that technique! It makes for compelling video, and if done correctly, can induce a great deal of motion. However, it's risky. It's simply impossible to specify the vertebra or the direction of movement. It's impossible to take precautions for areas nearby that might be too inflamed or too degenerative to accept that much force. I would not let anyone do that to me.
