Unfortunately this weekend was a case of brave decisions and hard luck.
With this being our 1st Protyre season and 1st time on this rally, we knew the only way to gain an advantage on the regulars would be to gamble on tyres. When we got to SS1 arrival the roads were bone dry and drying further due to a big delay, and with a lot of crews around us choosing a wet tyre we'd hoped to be in the mix but unfortunately 0.5miles from the end of the stage we come across a competitor blocking the road and the stage got stopped with nominal times given.
Onto SS2 where we wanted to have a real good push! Unfortunately we made a mistake on the 2nd chicane, taking the wrong line too fast and having to turn on the crest to avoid a head on with the bale resulting in damage to both sides of the car but thankfully it was a decision that kept us in the rally. Results of the contact loosened the dash clocks so we spent the majority of the remaining milage driving with 1 hand and holding the clocks in with the other, remarkably after the issues we were only 11 seconds behind 1st 2wd in this stage so we knew we were right in the mix and on the correct tyres.
SS3 was cancelled due to a local idiot. That is all on that one!! Gutting for us because the stage and conditions suited our gamble.
Arriving at SS4 we were held for in a que for 20 minutes before being told 4&5 were cancelled for the organisers to regroup everything back in service so SS6-10 start on time. A decision we understand, but a decision that ruined our chances of taking anything to the competition.
Leaving service for the afternoon loop we knew rain was localised but we gambled again and held our nerve on the slick tyres once more, ultimately a decision that would put stop to gaining any of the top points. Torrential rain halfway through SS6 caught us of guard and we had multiple OH SHIT moments.. the same was to be said about SS7. SS8,9,10 were progressively getting better with the standing water slowly disappearing but the road condition were still in favour of the wet tyre and we just entered into bring it home mode.
We will regroup, bandage the wounds on ALS and we will be ready to travel to the Isle of Man for the Manx National in 7 weeks time.
