Secondly, giving food and providing shelter isn't a sustainable solution. If you let the economy do its thing, people will get jobs, and they will be able to provide shelter and food for themselves.

The Egypt Tower with the silly and stupid vertical moving louvers is a bust. No one buys high rise space to have that much view blocked. No One. Ok? Space elevator of some sort is the ticket. A 5 day trip is nothing. We would still launch ships, but imagine how quickly and cheaply we could move supplies and building materials off planet. If a space elevator is built. It would mean having the likely ability to be able to build much much larger spacecraft. My guess is that there are about 3-4 zeros missing on that space elevator price tag. If it were even 1 TRILLION, there would be more than enough interest today to start that project.
Yeah, only $10 billion? That's a rounding error on only the INTEREST the US will pay for their recent stimulus proposals. A space station/elevator would certainly be closer to $1 trillion in today's dollars. Triple that in future dollars by the time that thing got started. Perhaps in the 22nd century.
