    Black Satin Dancer was and is one of my favorites ever since I bought the vinyl album the day it was released way back when; Mainly because of Martin Barre’s guitar work on this track… that being said, One White Duck and Baker Street Muse are even more fun. Oh heck, the whole album is good. I was lucky enough to get in to see The Martin Barre Band two nights ago live with his 50 years of Aqualung Tour in Everett, 75 years young and he has still got IT. Even better now than ever because every song his band performs live features his guitar solos. Flawless rendition of Minstrel in The Gallery with most the band not even born when the album was released. Good job JP keep the Tull coming. It brings tears to my eyes watching the reactions to Jethro Tull for the first time. Appreciate your work!

      The opening track is an absolute masterpiece. 10/10. Then Cold Wind to Valhalla and Black Satin Dancer are like 9/10. Requiem is 8/10. But then One White Duck is 11/10 and Baker St. Muse is 12/10.

    This song gives me chills in its brilliance. It's an ode full of mystery that starts acoustically nuanced then flips itself over into a fierce reinterpretation of the opening, from appreciation and longing into fiery embrace and back to poetic gratitude. Have really been looking forward to your reaction to this and it was worth the wait.

    Yes, this song is a microcosm of Passion Play. If you wonder what was "left on the cutting room floor" or not included on an album - then you are obligated to listen to the "Chateau D'isaster Tapes" recorded in 1972, where they ditched an entire album's worth of songs and then started over (to make PP). They were polished up a bit and finally issued in 1993 as part of "Nightcap", and are really great.

    • @benoitdesmarais2948

      There are a lot of previously unreleased stuff in the 20th and 25th anniversary box sets. If you're a good enough band to leave gems like "Jack-a-Lynn" on the cutting room floor, you must have an amazing catalogue (which they do!)

    • @cobrasys
      @cobrasys 2 года назад +1

      Came here to say just that. Nightcap is a damn masterpiece. I frankly like the leftover stuff from Passion Play (like Critique Oblique and Scenario/Audition/No Rehearsal, my favourite tracks off that album) than Passion Play itself.

      Yes great recommendation! I've mentioned this a couple of times before and will echo it here again. *The Chateau D'Herouville Sessions* (preferably first) and *Nightcap* are absolutely worth checking out, some of my very favorite Tull material.

    • @NewBritainStation
      @NewBritainStation 2 года назад +1

      The Chateau D’Isaster tapes, also on the 40th anniversary version of A Passion Play (and includes a few parts not on Nightcap) is three sides of a double album that wasn’t completed.
      It’s a missing link between Thick as a Brick and APP.
      It’s also a better album than many albums that were released. The Nightcap version flute solos Ian added c1993 plus reverb. The version on APP doesn’t have those additions. The Story of the Hare Who Lost His Spectacles belongs before Law of the Bungle Part I.

    Hi JP, speaking of songs left on the cutting room floor Tull has a whole CD of songs that never made the final Album for one reason or another . Nightcap - Unreleased masters 73 - 91 & when I first heard it i thought how did theses songs not make the albums there just as good as the ones that did. It's just a fantastic collection & just a definite for all Tull fans .

    A quick note on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - they have a history of disrespecting prog rock. I mean, they absolutely hate prog and recognize it's significance only with the greatest of pressure from fans. It took decades to finally acknowledge Rush and later Yes - both bands FAR more influential and significant in the history of rock than about 90% of their other inductees.

    What’s left on the cutting room floor?
    Loads of songs, many as good if not better than what was released.
    In ‘93 They released an album called Nightcap that had most of the Chateau D’Isaster Tapes, which was three sides of an unfinished double album to follow Thick as a Brick that they shelved and recorded A Passion Play instead. The second disc are 18 additional previously unreleased tracks from through the eras. It was the tip of the iceberg.
    Two additional tracks from these sessions were used on singles and EPs. There were 11 additional tracks from the Warchild sessions, many unreleased. That is, between Thick as a Brick to Minstrel alone were more than two full album’s worth of unreleased or single-only songs.
    There are 15 previously unreleased tracks on various remasters from The Broadsword and the Beast album, and Ian has said there remain others that will probably be on the forthcoming box for that album.
    I would guess that overall there are probably enough tracks for as many as 10 “albums” over their career.

    Been a Tull fan for 48 years. Thick a a Brick, Passion Play, Songs From the Wood, Minstrel in the Gallery, and Heavy Horses, are by far the most ambitious-sounding albums they have ever made. The early ones were either rock or more often blues-based. The later were ones, mixed at best, along with a couple of missteps. In other words you are reacting to the cream of the crop.

    This was my first or second Tull album ever so I don't hear Passion Play as Passion Play came later as I sought out more and more. I normally listen to Minstrel front to back so to see side two dissected into disassociated tracts may be disconcerting in a way. The beginning and the end of this album bookend what could be understood in entirety as a Minstrel's performance. Otherwise, I enjoy the reactions.

I know that you weren't completely overawed by the first side (which surprised me, but then it is a lot to take in on a first listen), but side 2 is a rollercoaster ride of four tracks that forms a seamless progression. It's well worth a go. 🙂

Music shouldn't be a competition in the first place and, unlike sports, there are no real objective criteria by which to rate artists, except perhaps for relative longevity, record sales and concert ticket sales ... which we KNOW the Hall of Fame doesn't use. This may be my favourite J.Tull song, full of lightness in sublime poetry, and a journey of expression. Beautiful melodies, changing rhythms and accelerating tempo, all work brilliantly. Also Jeffrey Hammond’s bass lines work in harmony and rhythmic contrast to the melody.
    There are more great tracks. In college my friends and I would play guitars on “One White Duck, Zero...”

    Jon Wiener of Rolling Stone Magazine runs The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame . He doesn't like Ian Anderson . He's the reason Tull is not in the RRHF.

      Jon has an angry jealousy of talent, ever since grade school, when the bullies called him a "wiener".

    You are serving yourself, as well as your subscribers a great disservice. You keep talking about A Passion Play, yet still ignore the fact that "The Chateau d'Isaster Tapes", should have been a part of your "A Passion Play Album reaction". It has many similarities to A Passion Play, yet is entirely different than A Passion Play. Once you listen to it, you will see the error of your ways.

    Tull has graced us with mountains of beautiful tunes. Just absolute magic. Ian had me up until Songs from the Wood or so. He has lost me mostly since then...
