In the past we had to pay a "deposit" on e.g. glass bottles that we paid at purchase of the product and if/when we returned that - now empty - item to the retailers' we got our money back. For plastic bottles and tin cans (actually alumin(i)um or steel) my country now has reinstated deposits. Now, street people and kids may be seen collecting these from the streets or public bins, and returning them to the shops where they convert the money into food or beverages of their addiction.
