Joel Raney (b. 1956) started playing the piano sometime between learning to walk and learning to read, and he went on to earn a Master’s degree in piano from the Juilliard School. Joel's interest in music of all kinds has led to employment opportunities in everything from classical and jazz performance to pop vocal arranging. He has conducted national tours of Broadway productions, and has written soundtracks for more than 2000 television and radio commercials, plus numerous scores for short films. In “I Know He Watches Me,” Joel combines three gospel favorites in this uplifting medley: What a Friend; His Eye Is on the Sparrow and God Leads Us Along. The affirming message that God watches over His children and leads them along reminds us of God’s loving grace.
What a Friend We Have in Jesus (words: Joseph M. Scriven; music: Charles C. Converse)
We should never feel discouraged,
When we can take it to the Lord in prayer.
His Eye is on the Sparrow (words: Civilla D. Martin; music: Charles H. Gabriel)
Oh, why should I feel discouraged? And why should the shadows come?
Oh, why should my heart be lonely longing for heavenly home?
When Jesus is my portion, my constant friend is he.
For his eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me.
Yes, I sing because I’m happy. Oh, I sing because I’m free.
For his eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me.
God Leads Us Along (words and music: George A. Young)
In shady, green pastures, so rich and so sweet, God leads his dear children along.
Where waters cool flow soothes the weary one’s feet, God leads his dear children along.
Some through the waters, some through the flood,
Some through the fire, but all through the blood.
Some through great sorrow, but God gives a song
In the night season, God leads us along.
