How to Lifecast a Hand with Alginate

In this video I make a casting of my hand in wax with dental alginate. Called lifecasting, you can also make a negative mold or impression of objects that you want to cast with wax, plaster, plastic, etc...
Dental alginate is the stuff they use to make an impression of your teeth for dental appliances.

Suggestion: Start the mixer while it is in the water and *then* add the alginate.

You know lifecasting with alginate is commonly done with a LOT more water. Mixes from 3:1 all the way up to 7:1. Might be a bit easier that way. Your mix ratio is for teeth casts.

Alginates are a great invention. Cleaning the residual alginate from the palm model is nothing. How much work would it be for a figure of the same size with protruding thin elements. The plaster would be too brittle in many cases. But wax from a candle is better.

Alginate is generally edible and is used in food preparation. I would not want to eat a bunch myself.

Don't you just hate it when you make a video and then people comment on all the things you did wrong? You do? Then good. You'll understand. What you should have don't was cover the inside of the mold with a release, either baby oil, mineral oil, or some compound intended to be used as a release. Then perhaps your wax would not have stuck to the alginate.
