They are compared to cities of like size. Their authorized strength is about 1,500 sworn to serve a resident population of 510,000 across 320 square miles - which is really small. As for the budget, they have dramatically increased the salaries of KCPD staff of every rank to encourage recruitment and retention. Also, when they mention that they are short-staffed, they mostly mean the Patrol Division - not enough bodies to staff the any of the watches across all six districts. Friends and family matter more to me than a place at this point, but my feelings towards KC as a place have become somewhat negative over the last two years. I don't think it's chopped liver, but it went from being a B+ city to a C+ or B- city after the pandemic. This downgrade I'm giving it is because of the surge in property crime (my car was stolen last year, at lot of my favorite local businesses are getting broken into, I'm always worried about my car overnight now) and the increase in rent prices. Rent is still below the national average but the gap has narrowed a lot. I started looking in Chicago and Philadelphia and was surprised to find it's not really that much more expensive to rent in either of those cities. Working remotely has been nice, but I would have more opportunities working hybrid work in my industry if I lived in Chicago or Philadelphia. Take it from someone who has lived other places.. Kansas City has a lot going on, the most important is a strong and diversified economy. The complaints here are the same in every metropolitan area in the U.S. of A, but at least in KC you know you can get and keep a job. The weather is another.. unless you want snow in your life. Not much of that lately. I am generally happy with life in the KC area. Disclaimer.. I live and work outside of the KC city limits.

It all depends are where you are from. I just paid my property tax ($41,000.)on a 2500 sq ft condo. There’s always somewhere more expensive and somewhere cheaper.
I drive Uber in KC and the Main Street shutdown is stupid. They are working on tiny parts, but leave the rest still blocked despite work being done. I’ve lived in Lenexa since 89, and love KC over all the other places I live. Biggest complaint about KC are their racist ass police.
Just because he made a video and posted it with concerns doesnt mean the people are not talking about these topics to the local government. Your assertion makes no sense.
Yes, you're right about that! I feel like there are cliques in KC, and so people tend to be closed off! KC is not friendly like most people claim it to be!
Correct, KC people are very closed off and not open to meeting new people and experiencing new things. Very cliquish and insular for a large city and a very backward social culture.
We found it really depended on the neighborhood for us. In red bridge was a lot of elderly and local families and it was hard to meet people. But we moved to Pendleton Heights this summer and have been so welcomed! We love the people here!
I'm from the Omaha Metro area, & even I was shocked that the prices were high. This is the Midwest not NYC, LA, SF, Boston, Providence, & yes, I know Chicago is in the Midwest, & the most expensive Midwest city, but this is very similar to Omaha. The difference between KC & Omaha is 1. there are more FREE things to do in KC than in Omaha. 2. They have 3 Pro Sports teams in KC ( MLB, NFL, & MLS). Omaha doesn't have one & minor league does NOT count. 3. Omaha has no cultural diversity (#5 Least Cultural Diverse City in America). Kansas City is more culturally diverse than Omaha. 4. Kansas City has a power and light district. Omaha doesn't. 5. Kansas City is a real sports town. Omaha isn't. Omaha DGAF about the College World Series. The locals there say the CWS is a HS reunion (Hurrdat Sports confirmed that) but they won't STFU about football (Husker Football specifically). Omaha is NO Kansas City regarding Sports and not even close and the only time they follow other sports (MLB, NBA, NHL, MLS, Olympics, and even PGA) is if a former Husker was on that team #FanboyFakeFanLogic. BTW. I love Kansas City.
Haven't watched the video yet, but I'd be looking to move away if it weren't for already being committed to going to school at UMKC. Here's why: 1. Political climate in both states - being lgbtq+ (particularly transgender) in either Missouri or Kansas has gotten a lot worse in recent years and it'll get even worse than how it is now depending on how this next election goes. 2. Too car centric/not robust enough of a transit system - I really would prefer to not have to drive to work every day, but the transit system in KC is laughable at best. I wouldn't be able to get from where I live to where I work in a reasonable amount of time, if at all, using public transit. I'm glad we're getting more bike lanes and the streetcar extension, but I would really like a commuter rail system from the suburbs to downtown, and have bus routes split from the rail stops. Though I don't see that happening anytime soon, and I know getting another streetcar line is probably going to be several years away also. Also, traveling around downtown and seeing all the empty and often abandoned parking lots really hurts, and it severely impacts the walkability of the city. 3. Weather - thanks to climate change, it really feels like all but a couple months are blocked off from us doing very much of anything outdoors, and since I'm an outdoorsy person, that's a problem.
Are you seriously downplaying crime? It's an issue that encompasses everyone in the community, not just bad pockets. We need more police officers and strict incarceration.
@@movingtokc you are actually exacerbating it. A quick look at homicide rates as reported by the KCMO police department shows it has remained steady, which goes against the first few seconds of your video. Literally just google homicide rate KCMO.
Also, I thought that the money from people buying lottery tickets helps out the schools. Is that what they were saying. That the lottery helps schools. So I guess it doesn’t
The main reason that people are leaving is the out of kilter demographics. The 13% is far over represented here. More like 35%. The schools are technically not integrated. Which means that the demographic that pays taxes leave because of the way the schools are operated. It is a gang training ground. I live in the burbs, but will head for the Ozarks as soon as my kids graduate. Luckily we have constitutional carry. Don't go to the inner city without being armed. The blue leaning of the population screws over the city too. And the police aren't even allowed to run their own department. It is run by a board that is appointed at the state level due to corruption. That goes back almost 100 years.

Great video!! I have lived in the Kansas City area all my life and pot holes and crime have always been a problem. But something I have noticed that’s gotten worse the last few years is the graffiti and the location of this graffiti. I mean some of these people are risking their lives decorating the building and bridges and some of them are brand new not on service yet. I really feel the amount of tagging on a structure represents the quality of a city and something has definitely changed in Kansas City compared to 5 or 10 years ago.

They double my tax unjustly and then made it my problem and money again to make mostly right.
Im moving to the suburbs. Potholes, crime, school. If you send your kids to KCMO public schools it means you hate them or. cannot approve private school. I still love KC and even if I move to Johnson CO KS will spend time in the City. The problem with cities is the money class control development and the politics is about getting even / getting yours and not about doing whats best for all. Mayor Lucas is not the sharpest tool in the shed so he’s easily manipulated and thats why he was selected to be mayor. Mayor Lucas is a very nice man so not trying to insult him. I feel sorry for people starting out they have no choice but to move outside the city. You cannot live comfortably unless you’re making minimum of $150K
I agree, JC is way better. I have lived in Johnson County and KCMO. Johnson County is finally adding more restaurants and businesses. Johnson County is more Hispanic friendly too.
I, personally, could never live in JOCO again. I find it boring, beige, bland. It's a giant strip mall and HOA housing that all looks the same. KC has its problems and I'm considering moving, but I would never move to JOCO. If I move, it'll be out of the metro entirely to somewhere with more industry.
The reason why we have more crime is because we don’t have a lot of police. Because most of the older police officers are retiring. And the police department didn’t hire any new police officers. Plus people are shooting at police officers, just to do it. So that makes people not want to be a police officer

Hit a pot hole earlier this year that bent my wheel and knocked my steering out of alignment. Had to replace tie rods and the wheel
Same thing happened to me on the east side. Missouri roads are horrific!
One wonders if car repair shops lobby to keep streets from being kept up, so they can make money fixing broken cars.
LOL KC economy lags behind many other far more dynamic and innovative metro areas Weather is lousy for 80% of the year. Locals are cliquish and are extremely routine minded and set in their ways.

Great video, Kyle.
I hope people who are miserable in KC will learn from this video.
I move from Denver, I live 2 miles from work- Quality Hill to Children's Mercy- Broadway and Main have been torn up since I came 2 years ago, they shut down half the streets around the T-mobile center on the weekend and now we are doing construction on connecting streets and I the bridge to go up North hasn't been open since I got here.Don't even get me started on potholes-where do your taxes go?
Pensions
It all depends are where you are from. I just paid my property tax ($41,000.)on a 2500 sq ft condo. There’s always somewhere more expensive and somewhere cheaper.
Some needs to show the KC government what happened to Detroit, they are following the same road to ending KC as they did in Detroit.
I drive Uber in KC and the Main Street shutdown is stupid. They are working on tiny parts, but leave the rest still blocked despite work being done. I’ve lived in Lenexa since 89, and love KC over all the other places I live. Biggest complaint about KC are their racist ass police.
Cringe
I'll add I live in Blue Springs and in the past 5 years the traffic has become crazy !
I don't drive in blue springs on wed.fri.and sat. It's a nightmare on those days 😂
Im starting to see alooottt of kansas plates in kc but not alottt of missouri plates in Kansas ???
Kansas is the number 8th most moved out of state in the country, so they're moving somewhere- often nearby.
why on earth did you leave Denver to come back here????
Denver isn’t the same city it was 15 years ago when I moved there. It’s more complicated than that, but that’s a big reason.
No offense, but what happened to getting on your local government about these problems
Just because he made a video and posted it with concerns doesnt mean the people are not talking about these topics to the local government. Your assertion makes no sense.
Almost everything you're saying is any major metro in usa
It's the people for me. Everyone is so closed off and rude. Having a social life here is the weirdest endeavor
We love the people here!
the urban sprawl is pretty bad in kansas city.
I'm from the Omaha Metro area, & even I was shocked that the prices were high. This is the Midwest not NYC, LA, SF, Boston, Providence, & yes, I know Chicago is in the Midwest, & the most expensive Midwest city, but this is very similar to Omaha.
The difference between KC & Omaha is
1. there are more FREE things to do in KC than in Omaha.
Roads are dirtiest than ever, there are not cleaning brigades as before, roads conditions worse, now takes forever to fix the potholes.
Haven't watched the video yet, but I'd be looking to move away if it weren't for already being committed to going to school at UMKC. Here's why:
Taxes, Taxes, Taxes!
Nah at this point I think the road work just part of the map cus I promise I have never seen the city without a million cones on every other street
Property tax is theft.
Are you seriously downplaying crime?
It's an issue that encompasses everyone in the community, not just bad pockets.
We need more police officers and strict incarceration.
I’m not downplaying crime. It’s 2nd on my list.
You need police that aren't corrupt before you need more. KCMO cops are just the best armed gang.
My wife worked for kcps. Lets just say money is not the issue.
Traffic and construction come one you never been to California or Florida before then
The main reason that people are leaving is the out of kilter demographics.
Come to Overland Park
Better yet, Lenexa. 🤣

Kansas City should embrace not having good schools. It should drop property taxes and cater to childless and retired adults. Let private schools and the burbs handle the education...
Yup
Do you have any links to crime data that supports its rise, I could not find anything that supports the claim that homicide or crime has risen in the past few years.
They have no proof of the crime. Just more MAGA fearmongering.
Idea from "mayor" Lucas: hey we have too many meth heads, lets "arrest" them, give them a choice of jail or being transported to outlying cities like Independence, MO! What a douche.
Its not that bad
No way should a home that was built in the 90’s should cost more than 350k. Especially not in Kansas City.

Had to take a day off work to prove my case the house was 290k market... the County assement office has taken no responsibility for the algorithm broad stroking over valued assements without physical inspections. KC politics of "nonpartisan" is a bunch of BS. Everyone is partisan. period. lol
KC is expensive.

The reason why we have more crime is because we don’t have a lot of police. Because most of the older police officers are retiring. And the police department didn’t hire any new police officers. Plus people are shooting at police officers, just to do it. So that makes people not want to be a police officer

The Suburban cities your mentioning Olathe and Leawood are in the State of Kansas not Missouri. I guess your reasoning is the fact that there is not much going on in Kansas City Kansas.
