    test it within a range of say 20 meters and see if the steel ball can hit the target effectively.

    This is the case when you're skilled at building something but you're bad at physics.
    That metallic cylinder behind the steel ball sucks up a serious amount of kinetic energy, so the whole stuff is quite inefficient.
    Without that cylinder thing the steel ball would gain about 2x as much speed.

      Same problem faced by car manufacturers....though they know there are losses,but they have to use the differential mechanism
