- Something much lighter this week!
When I was a kid, I was very good at this game. I could beat it without any cheat code. I wanted to see how long I would last today with just 1 single life, no training... and a few more wrinkles.
Then I had to compose a piece that would go with this part. Something that would mix old school and modern sound with a build-up of tension.
"The Great Giana Sisters" is a platform game developed by Time Warp Productions in 1987. This video game is known for its controversial production history and its similarities to the famous Nintendo platform game "Super Mario Bros", and alleged for legally pressuring against the producers of the game to remove all copies from the shelves.
This true story increased the notoriety of the game and today made it a classic of retrogaming and actually one of my favorite game when I was a child, far ahead of Super Mario. Nintendo wanted it to disappear, it has since been ported to dozens of consoles and computers, even on those of Nintendo...

I love this song and playthrough. For some reason, this is one game I hadn't heard of, but it's really cool. It's like a mashup of Super Mario Bros and Commander Keen. I played a lot of cool games like this as a kid and teen. My first video game was Air-Sea battle for Atari 2600 (very Pong-like graphics), that came out in 1977. Although I actually didn't play Pong until I was a teenager. Usually you'd expect it to be the other way around. Fun fact: Most people think Pong was the first video game but there were older ones. In 1968 there was a game with a spot chasing another spot and you used a light gun to control your spot, there was also some submarine game in 1966 as well. In the very early 70s there was an updated version of Spacewar. I think Pong came out in 1972 for reference. Going back further there was Spacewar in 1962. There were two space-themed game releases in 1969, the first year two video games came out the same year. But it goes back even further, Tennis For Two is from 1958, Draughts and Naughts is from 1952, and a very primitive game called Cathode Ray Tube Entertainment Device is from 1947, it basically felt like a board game with very primitive video game elements, but still was incredibly groundbreaking. Granted, all the "historic" video games were from before my time, but I love reading up on a lot of stuff.
Thanks for the very interesting comment ! Really glad you took the time to share this. I had Pong when I was veeeery young and barely remember it.
I think the first « video game » that I saw is a guy from the 50’s who played with some radar from the navy or something like that.
For sure, Giana Sisters is like high technology compared to that 😅
Anyway, cheers and thanks again.
@@nolake I think you're thinking of Tennis For Two, the first video game demonstrated to the public in 1958, the earlier ones were more government and science lab experiments.
The synths on this have the perfect sound for this retro computer game. 😊😊👏👏
Hey thanks, appreciate that !
This synth sounds gets me back to days of arcade games! Well done flashback!
ah ah thanks man, yeah these were sweet times for sure !
I smiled the whole way through the video. Old school is correct and wonderful! Bravo for the amazing music and game play!
I’m glad you did, thank you so much for the compliment !!
For not being a gamer this really had me spellbound watching all the obvious opposition. The music was absolutely perfect with all its many variations and layers. Love the suspense build as it progressed. Philosophical thought - now isn't this just as life is along the journey?
Lol good question.
I almost missed this comment. I guess few are those who took the time to watch and discover how the track evolves. But I’m glad some like you did ! Thank you 🙏
This is freaking awesome brother! I never knew about this game but the story is cool. The music goes perfect with it and it looks like you're still pretty great at it! 🤘🏼😊
I was better at it back then but I was quite impressed that I was still able to eat 10 levels in a row with one life lol. Cheers man and thank you !
Such a cool original sound track Totally awesome performance and creative work No Lake Thank you for sharing 🎵
Many thanks John ! Always much appreciated buddy.
When the image matches the sound!!! Great to think sometimes where we are coming from! The perfect approach!!
Cheers LABIS
Hey thanks Labis, appreciate the compliment !!
😵😵😵 Music and videos hypnotic in their simplicity! Great Lake!
Many thanks man !!
An original and beautiful work as always Fred! Congratulations my friend!!!!
Thanks a lot Marcus ! Appreciate it!
A perfect visual for a suspenseful track! Excellent!
Ah ah glad you liked it buddy, thank you 🙏
Really wonderful sounds of course! Built up the tension quite well. Never heard of this game strangely enough. Nice work!
Many thanks Dylan, appreciate the kind compliment !!
The video reminded me of old times of playing with my beloved Commodore 64. 😂
Your music, as always, fantastic!
I still have mine actually^^ But this is the Amiga version. Anyway, thank you for the compliment man ! Much appreciated !!
I also still have my C64, but it doesn't work... many years ago I spent money on several chips that I changed, but I couldn't get it to work again anyway... Plus I have the 5.25" floppy drive that's as big as a shoebox and heavy as a cobblestone! LOL...
My dream was an Amiga, but I never had the budget LOL!
What a fun, this old computergames! The sound correspondends fine to the game 🙂 Best Fx...
Thanks man, glad you enjoyed the funny trip !!
Wow... I felt electricity on my skins right from the start.
Great beats, electric sounds and melodies. 😊😊👏👏😊😊👏👏
Thanks again!! Much appreciated 🙏
Very cool back story, enjoying my listen while watching.
Thanks Darren !!
thanks for the schooling this is my first time seeing this game.
My pleasure, thanks man !
This is great!! Awesome stuff brother!
ah ah thanks man !!
Dear Fred, I really like your new piece.
It doesn't seem light or _"lighter"_ to me than other music pieces you've recently created. On the contrary, your good arrangement gives it a certain depth, your choice of voices gives this piece an almost orchestral grandeur, and your keyboard playing gives it a kind of freedom that little Giana sister can only dream of in her narrow computer game world. I think your new piece of music is really successful, it is less "jump and run" and more "dream and stun".
Yours, Markus
I guess you’re right. I’m glad you enjoyed it! I wouldn’t have bet on this one though.
By lighter I also wanted to say that I know that few of us care about retro gaming and stuff like this stupid challenge of mine (proven by the stats) but retro gaming is part of my musical roots like Vangelis, Morricone or Kraftwerk. I didn’t want to upload it because who cares in the end but then I told myself that I had fun making it so let’s share some fun !
Thanks for the nice comment btw, really appreciate it.
love this theme, Fred, it is a great fit for the video game footage 🙂
Many thanks Andy !!
Such a cool game and awesome tracks my dear friend Fred!!
Love and respect Kyle!! 😊🥁🇵🇭
Many thanks Kyle ! Appreciate it !
Living dangerously! LOL. Epic retro!
Ah ah thanks man !
Great track my friend. I too remember these games from the past. My young son always beat me hands down, no matter what! ;-) 👏👏
lol mine too 😁
Thanks for the compliment !! Appreciate it!
Very nice old school computer game and the music matches just perfectly! Well done Fred 👍👍👍
Many thanks (again) dear Phil ! Appreciate all the precious kind words 🙏
Wow beautiful 🥰 great work friend 💪💯
Thanks man! Appreciate it !
I been playin some old school games lately like the classic Zeldas, Metroid, Kid Icarus etc on the NES, so this is an interesting watch for me especially right now. This one right here reminds me of the original Mario Brothers game on the old NES. The soundtrack you made here is spectacular, and far exceeds this realm of music in these games by a million miles. The sound has a modern/futuristic vibe, but it also does have a nostalgic appeal in my perspective. Very cool, and adventurous with a sweet progression and effects to keep things fresh and dynamic. People need to keep an ear out for your signature half way points too. There's a lot more to it that deserves to he heard. Very impressive work, and if I ever make video games your hired lol. Sweet track man! Dig! Happy weekend!
👍 👍 🫨 🎶 🎵 🎮 🎮 🚫 🏞
Ah ah thanks man. Working for you in California can be sweet indeed. But I’d miss Belgian beers and chocolate, French and Spanish wines, British synths, German cars, Italian food… 😁
Thanks for the great compliment and indeed those titles you’re mentioning are part of me too.
Immensely grateful for the kind comment and wish you a pleasant night !!
Sounds great. Excellent track for the game.
Thanks Lady Colors ! That was fun making something a little bit more light-hearted 🙂
Ah yes! Some classic Nerd Lake here, retro computer games, synthy vibes, what more does one need? Fine work. That spider at the end looked very scary. Am I mean for hoping you would die all the way through?
I’m sure you are 😁
Thanks man! Some nerd lake vibes are kind of funny from time to time 😊 Cheers man.
Great respect! for your`s work !🌟 💯 🤘
Thank you so much 🙏
@@nolake see you 🪂 🥂⛱🌴
hey buddy, you are stil very good in this game, BRAVO!!!!! i played this a few times on the Amiga, ...then it had a virus (like most of my discs) haha 🤣🤣🤣!!! cool synth composition to accompany your little retro adventure, much enjoyed Frédéric!!!!!
I still have it and managed to finish it after making the vid :-))) Appreciate the cool comment man, cheers and thank you !
Beautiful composition dear friend ! A big like for you 39!😊
Thank you ! Appreciate it !!
@@nolake 🤗
Soooooo cool what a great idea, Fred. Made me want to give this a go with Wonderboy or Alex the Kidd
Aaah Wonderboy and Alex Kid, two of my partners back then 😊
Cheers man and thank you !
Hello Frederic....you have nailed it with the 80's style here mate. I like....A LOT!! 😇
Thanks Paul !! Appreciate it ! That was fun trying something a bit different.
Very nicely done!!
Many thanks for the compliment !
Excellent soundtrack! Never heard of this game, but it's very Super Mario Bros like.
That’s indeed the point 😊
Thanks man !
Fantastic music, dude!! I never heard of that game. Interesting history behind it 🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹👍🏻✨✨✨✨
Hey thanks again man ! Appreciate that !
Ah ça donne envie de prendre les manettes et de jouer !! Super boulot Fred !! LyDia ♫♪♫
Ah ah on est trop vieux pour ça 😅 enfin moi en tout cas mais c’était bien drôle ! Merci pour le compliment !!
Lol i've never seen this game. Nice work man!👍
Thanks man !
Great played :)
Many thanks Stephan !
Nice run!
Very cool! I had not heard of this game. If Mario is a plumber, is Giana an electrician? 😄
Wonderful music, Fred! I like how the lower tones have that buzzy quality, but are subdued enough to give space to the higher voices. It gives the video an epic feeling.
Have a great weekend!
Thanks man. Very nice compliment ! I think that the whole game design of Giana Sisters was to make some irony about Mario's world. Two sisters (Giana and Maria) vs two brothers. The men look like very "man-power-cliché" where the girls were light-hearted and cute. And the original soundtrack was actually way darker than Mario's theme. Mario's music is famous and everybody would say it's a cool music but, is it?...
@@nolake when it comes to Koji Kondo’s music, I’ve always preferred the Legend of Zelda themes.
Indeed. Ocarina of Time left an important trace in my memory.
That's clever and coooool.
Thank you !!
Cool tune! In that gaming era, I had a similarly formatted Monty Python game. It was all about throwing fish at things for rewards of cheese. lol 🧀
ah ah this must have been so much fun indeed :-))) Thanks man !!
Great job ❤
Thank you !!
You made it to stage 9, Fred. ... cool
I'm not much of a gamer... but this one looks fun
Great track; of course the No Lake signature sound shines through.
Cheers bud
I used to wipe out the 30 levels with 3 life but I’m a bit rusty lol. Cheers man and thank you!
@@nolake
30 levels? You a serious playa!
Yw... ciao
I was 😁
superbe like 4 amitiés josé 👍
Merci José !
You know Machinae Supremacy - Giana Sisters? ^__^ Ah, well... this challenge sounds sooooo goood too
Yeah but MS's version is (just) a cover of Chris Huelsbeck track. I didn't mean to make a new version of the original soundtrack even if I love what MS has done with it :-))) Cheers man and thank you !
Cool ! 👍
Thanks Lady Moon !
Nice!
Thanks man !
Haha nice one mate!
eh eh thanks man !
Brilliant track Fred to go along with the game
Hey thanks again Mark !! Appreciate that !!
Great composition Fred, you definitely built the tension.. I have to admit video games were never my thing and I tried to figure out what you were doing in this game and have no clue. Video games are like a dark art to me.
I'm working in the video game business even if I hate today's games. The rare moments I do play is only with oldies like that, it brings me back nostalgia. It's like some kind of therapy lol. Anyway, thanks for the compliment man, much appreciated as always. No "visuals by Colin Jones" in here 🤣🤣
@@nolake I didn't have a clue what you did. What part of the business do you do? Before I retired, I worked for a company that created reading software for school kids in kindergarten and first grade. I created both the lessons themselves, in the form of interactive games, and also the backend system that teachers used to track progress. Before that I worked at another educational company that created CD ROMS for use in schools teaching Math, Science, Geography, English Language etc. All done in a 3D environment where students moved around a "Virtual Campus" using Quicktime VR.
If I had done the visuals for this video it would have been MUCH shorter lol
Oh that’s interesting indeed!
I’m mostly someone who negotiates agreements between the majors and the final retailer for different categories of products, gaming included.
@@nolake I can see that would be a frustrating job at times. I was lucky in my last job (the reading software) as I could be creative and add the features I thought would be well accepted rather than having to be told what to do. The lessons themselves had been pretty stable for a few years but I was the person that came up with how the data would be collected in the lessons and how it would be saved to a database. I created a few lessons and worked with a few teams that created the rest of the lessons making sure they were all saving the correct data at the correct times etc. Later I created the tool that the teachers used for tracking the progress and creating reports etc. I was there for 17 years in total, right from the initial start up to when the company closed down. Can't say I miss the days of having to work through the night to meet deadlines.
😅 memories !
I make my own schedule. After university I used to work from 7am to 22pm 6 days a week. It lasted 7 years. Then I decided to live 😁
Je ne connaissais pas cette version pixel du jeu ni cette ost et d ailleurs j aime cette ost😊bravo Fred
Alors que tu connaisses pas la musique, je te rassure c’est normal 😁 Merci Alex !
@@nolake 😂
👍👍
Merci Michel !!
Fantastc 👍 Game😊
Thank you !
Nah, nothing similar to Mario at all 😉.. love the suspense in this piece .. I could see it being used in a modern game of exploration.. I was feeling Mass Effect
I love Mass Effect. Its soundtrack at least. Thanks for the very kind words !
Trop fort Fred
Ah ah merci Xa !!
