Hey guys,
Here's a cover I did with a dear friend of mine (from RUclips), Jess Walker. Check her channel out, here: / jessicalarewalker
Jess is a natural, superlative singer, and together, we chose to do 'Movie' by Tom Misch - one of my favourite, current artists - off his upcoming album, 'Geography'. All within a couple brief recording sessions that we squeezed into her 1-week, action-packed trip to Dubai. This video also features many firsts for me. Including singing (hope you like that), a collab with Jess, and using live horns! I used a 1959 Conn 6B trumpet to lay down a basic horn line for the chorus. Just about squeezed that out, as I'm hardly a trumpeter haha.
Also, I must acknowledge sE Electronics for their absolutely INCREDIBLE z5600a II, tube microphone. This thing is fierce on just about everything: but particularly vocals. In this song, you are listening to it completely unequalised. That's right - striaght from the mic! The sound is rich, detailed, dynamic and polished right out of the mic. Super impressive!
For guitar nerds, I used two, very cheap guitars to record this. The rhythms were done on a Squier Affinity Telecaster (which I picked out, after days of searching for the right one), and the leads are on an Epiphone Dot. As many of you know, I make my own pickups by hand, and I have installed a pair of my gold-stripe Adam Lee Mark V pickups into this Epi, which totally transformed it. It's now one of my favourite guitars. And listening to the tone in this video, you may understand why.
A huge thank-you is also due to Tone Tubby, for the best speakers on earth (using a custom, Purple Haze-loaded 2x12" cab here), and Two-Rock for the insane Classic Reverb Signature I'm using to drive them. Currently, I feel I am at a tonal high point in my life. The sounds that come out of this room continually exceed my expectations.
